Unless the cold front hitting the East coast lately has finally frozen your eyes and ears shut, then you are undoubtedly aware of the Golden Globe awards which took place last Sunday night. As usual there were winners and losers, only some of which were mildly surprising ( Leonardo Dicaprio won, Meryl Streep didn’t). But let’s get to what’s really been on everyone’s minds: the dresses. It’s not easy to find an icon status worthy dress. To earn that title you must take a risk, and make it work. Risks can lead to worst dressed lists and fashion faux pas. Elizabeth Hurley’s Versace
The 1994 premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral launched Elizabeth Hurley into icon status and not because of any acting chops. The black, body-con gown was held together by several oversized safety pins clinging to her side and it remains one of the most risqué, yet non-trashy red carpet dresses to date.
Angelina Jolie’s Dolce & Gabbana
Jolie may be the only actress who could possibly pull off a tuxedo at the Oscars, and in 2001 that is just what she did. A slim white tux with nothing underneath, hair pulled back in a classic ballet bun and Jolie had us all worshipping at her feet. It was the first time an actress had dared be quite so unfeminine but what makes it iconic is that it worked.
Halle Berry’s Elie Saab
In 2002 Halle Berry wore what could have been a status ruining gown. Floor length, blood red satin at the skirt with a sheer bodice, only a stitching of embroidery keeping us from viewing the spectacle of her gams. However, instead it became one of the most groundbreaking gowns the Oscars have ever seen. Kudos to you Halle.
Charlize Theron’s Dior
One of the few Golden Globe dresses to truly break the mold, Theron’s 2002 gown included just enough skin to get us sweating while stopping short of anything less than class. A plunging neckline and a slit up the side added the sex appeal while the fabric cluster at her left leg left us speechless. A truly one of a kind choice.
Nicole Kidman’s L’Wren Scott
Just last year Kidman shocked us with a L’Wren Scott gown that made her look dipped in black oil and gold jewels. The description says it all. A look that should have been atrocious but somehow made it. It showed off her sexy figure as well as her fashion fearlessness. An iconic look.
