New York band The Pierces are featured in our Music & Friendship issue, and just released their new video “Believe in Me”. Check out the interview and video below!
How would you describe the new sound vs. the old album?
I’d say the sound of our new album is a bit more modern. The last record had a lot of songs that focused on heartache, while this one is more about strength and empowerment. We named it Creation, because it’s about becoming exactly who you want to be and creating a life that you love. You are your own creation.
You guys directed your first video on the new record entitled Kings. What was your inspiration behind it?
I had been making digital art and I wanted to put it into motion for the “Kings” video. We shot it all ourselves on our iPhones’ and I did all the art and editing on my iPad and Final Cut Pro. I was kind of learning as I went along but we love the way it turned out…it has so much energy and shows our personalities. I was inspired by Peter Gabriel’s old videos that were stop motion and had a homemade feel but still looked cool and modern.
How does being sisters and being bandmates work, any sibling rivalry?
Yes, there is definitely rivalry, but we feel it pushes us to be better people. Sometimes it can suck being in a band with your sister, but sometimes it’s amazing!
Favorite female musician of all time?
Allison would say Joni Mitchell. I can’t choose just one! Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Dolly Parton, Sinead O’Connor, Tori Amos, Debbie Harry, Stevie Nicks, and Amy Winehouse are some of my favorites and have all influenced me in different ways.
What is your favorite song on the new album?
We love them all! That’s why we are putting them out for the world to hear, but I’d say some standout tracks are: Creation, Kings, & Monsters.
What plan do you have for 2014
We plan to tour like crazy, make new music, and hopefully squeeze in some time on a Mexican beach!
