Why I Think the Instagram Spam Sweep is Saving Everyone

This is like the worst kind of hangover. The I’ve-lost-all-my-followers (that we all know that you bought) overnight hangover. Yesterday you had 1 million and today 60 thousand less, ouch. Burn.

In a schadenfreude way (see Avenue Q) I was pretty excited for this impending sweep to get rid of all the dead weight/spam accounts that pretty much do nothing except give people a false sense of confidence whilst making me mad envious that I could easily appear more desirable and popular by paying like $10 for 1000 followers. Alas, that envy has disappeared as I got hit very little, praise Jesus also I’m gloating.

Here’s a few reasons for why it’s awesome:

Firstly, spam accounts are super wack and don’t contribute anything positive to world of IG. Point, blank, period. The reason why they’re created is to prey on people with low self-esteem or inflated egos in hope that these new robotic friends will give them more credibility.

Secondly, it highlights that it’s pretty embarrassing to have to buy followers, really you should just accept you’re not as popular as you are and move on. Also stop believing in IG as a way to measure you as person. (Except when it comes to Rihanna, like she literally might be the most popular person in the world and her IG proves, however Justin Bieber not so sure). Of course in some cases I understand the reason to do so, small businesses even large ones it definitely can make sense as strategic move.

Finally, this is basically a lesson in keeping it 100. It’s way more rewarding when likes and followers are authentic, isn’t it?

Obviously, a lot of folks have no idea who’s following them so in those cases it comes as less of a blow and more just funny. But all in all it reveals how much we actually have invested in an app that we use to literally just post pictures. Lesson learned: stop taking IG so seriously and stop buying followers.

It’s ok though because Lana Del Rey still loves you.
