Alexa Melo is a 20-year-old songwriter based in Los Angeles who loves Radiohead as much as we do. Recently, she recorded her remake of “Lotus Flower”; she played all the instruments, and produced the video in her own room. As she puts the finishing touches on her debut album, we caught up with her to hear about her favorite songs, celebrity crushes and her plans for 2015.

What’s your favorite song to perform?

That’s a tough one, because each song has a completely different vibe. I guess it’s probably between two songs. ‘Demoted’, which is very slow and almost psychedelic. It’s super dramatic and emotional so it’s very therapeutic to perform. Then there’s a song called ‘Troubled Boy’ which is a massive rock jam. I adore playing that one because there’s a 2 minute outro at the end where my band and I get to be as loud and ridiculous as possible. We get to build this angsty, hypnotic wall of noise and it’s easy to get lost in which is the best part of playing live—getting completely lost.

What’s your least favorite song you’ve written?

I’ve written so many songs I hate, but they’ve all been banished to the dungeon of shitty songs, so I can’t even recall the titles right now. I think what makes me hate a song I’ve written is if the song doesn’t end up fitting the initial idea I had. It’s hard for me to bounce back from high expectations.

Can you tell us your signature beauty tip?

I’m not sure I have one to be honest. I think the best beauty advice I can give is for you to find something that makes you feel the most beautiful and just rock it. Whether it’s a bow tie and slacks or a leather jumpsuit and pumps, just do you. Do what makes you feel the most comfortable in your own skin. Don’t try and reach the societal beauty standard because you’re better than that…beauty is just an opinion.

Who is your celebrity crush?

I know it’s hard to believe but I honestly don’t have one right now. It’s hard for me to crush on somebody I’ve never met!

What are you looking forward to for 2015?

Last summer I emancipated myself from a major record label which is huge, fantastic news for me. It means I can do whatever I want with my music and life! So in 2015 I’m looking forward to enjoying this new freedom and beginning to build a music career for myself on my own terms without anyone or any company holding me back from doing so. It should be quite a journey.
