Last night Bruce Jenner sat down with Dianne Sawyer on ABC to talk about gender identity. When Dianne Sawyer pressed Bruce about whether or not he currently identified as a woman, he told her “For all intents and purposes, I am a woman.”
During the interview, Bruce asked Dianne to use familiar pronouns he/him, but said that his true self and inner soul was female. He revealed during the interview that once, Kim had walked in on him trying on a dress, and that it had been a secret between the two of them for quite some time.
Jenner disclosed that the first person he ever told about being a woman was his first wife, and that he knew he was a woman since the age of 5. He revealed that he has struggled throughout the years to come to terms with this revealing that in the 1980s, he even started taking hormone replacement therapy, and got a nose job to make his face appear more feminine. But, eventually gave up.
Despite accusations that Jenner’s gender identity is a publicity stunt, Bruce maintains that his desires to come out publicly came from the heart. He said, “The one thing that could really make a difference in people’s lives was right here in my soul, and I could not tell that story.”
During the interview, Jenner’s daughters Kylie and Kendall took to the internet to publicly express their support of their father’s transition.
Kendall reacts on twitter to her father’s interview with Dianne Sawyer.
Kylie expresses her support of her dad.
We think it’s amazing that Bruce is finally going to be able to live the life he wants to now. It’s always a tremendous effort to come out, and it’s probably even more difficult to go through that process in the public eye.
Bruce’s story will allow transgender kids to know that they aren’t alone in the world, and for that he deserves to be applauded– not ridiculed. Bruce Jenner is definitely one brave babe!
