It’s been a rough year for Mariah Carey. Although her relationship with Nick Cannon always seemed a little weird, just when we had accepted that he would always be her baby, baby turned around and filed for divorce.
The timing made sense. In December of 2014, Mariah Carey was a mess. Lest you forget her infamous 2014 Rockefeller rendition of her classic Christmas carol, “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” here’s a reminder:
Oh, how the mighty had fallen. Without a husband, and more importantly, without a voice, what was to become of Mariah Carey? The world wanted to know, but also just wanted to know what was going on with Beyonce/Katy Perry/Miley/Rihanna etc. Ah, the brevity of the public’s attention span.
Just when most of us were ready to let Mariah squander away in domestic (in)stability, bae did something none of us saw coming: not only did she release a new track, but she released a diss track. How ’90s of her.
Unsurprisingly, given her recent track record, “Infinity” isn’t Mariah Carey’s best song. To her credit, it’s not even close to being her worst. And with lyrics like, “Name hold weight like kilos/ Boy you actin’ so corny like Fritos/ Wouldn’t have none of that without me, though,” the song is just cheesy enough to make it a must-listen.
Her whistle tone may be softer, and who knows how it’d sound live, but at least Mariah is fighting back. Once a diva, always a diva.
