These days it seems like everybody is all about that mermaid steeze, but to be honest, besides dying our luscious locks lavender, none of us are really that committed to the look…well, besides this one girl.
Melissa Dawn, better known professionally as Mermaid Melissa, is a one-of-a-kind aquatic performer whose job is well, to be a mermaid. Or at least, make you believe she is.
Although she usually performs in giant tanks and swimming pools, according to her website, Melissa tours the world “performing underwater breath hold showcases (her longest being 5 minutes” with a licensed Mermaid Entertainment Aquatic Company” which includes other “professional mermaids, mermen, and pirates.”
But if you’re already thinking to yourself, “Gee, I gotta get me a new set of flippers,” you need to be warned that being a mermaid isn’t just about sitting on a rock with a fork in your hand looking pretty.
See, there’s the problem that to the other animals in the ocean, you look like lunch. Melissa constantly has to be on the watch for eels, jellyfish stings, and hungry stingrays. Plus that tail she has to swim around with can weigh up to 60 pounds. No wonder mermaids are so svelt – all they f-ckin do is work on their abs.
