Vanessa Carlton has found true bliss in her thirties: a happy marriage with Deer Tick frontman John McCauley, a healthy (and adorable) baby plus a brand new EP and album. Carlton is letting go of the pressures that plagued her twenties’ post-“A Thousand Miles” career and making music she’s always wanted to make.

“I’m lucky to have had this successful record off the bat and at the same time, it’s been a challenge to figure out the post-war.”

“Once you’re at thirty and you realize you survived your twenties, it’s so awesome,” Carlton said. It seems so much of our twenties are spent under a cloak of narcissism; worrying about our place in the world. “I’m more interested in what’s going on outside of my own world and I don’t feel that pressure creep in, now that I’m in my thirties,” Carlton said. For one, that means she is taking better care of herself with a physically healthier lifestyle and it also means she’s ridding herself of anxiety when it comes to her creative world. While it may have been over 14 years ago and she has released three intriguing albums since, Carlton will forever be loved for her first hit “A Thousand Miles.”

“I love the idea of turning on music and an album soothing you.”

“I’m lucky to have had this successful record off the bat and at the same time it’s been a challenge to figure out the post-war,” Carlton said. Along with her thirties came a wisdom and optimism about her life and musical career. She has learned to let go and find a new source of inspiration. “I feel really lucky to be alive, excited about music and going for a sound I have dreamt up, not feeling like I’m anchored to some type of success that I had years ago,” Carlton said.

Carlton has never been in any kind of rush; taking years off in between each record. A lot of growing up happened in between each album. In recent years leading up to the new EP, Blue Pool, Carlton has become a wife, married Deer Tick frontman in a wedding officiated by Stevie Nicks, and is now a proud mother. While sleep is something totally lacking in her life right now, she’s feeling more fulfilled than ever. “Kids take you back to a very primal joy abut the simplest things, especially when you have a kid for the first time,” Carlton said, “I don’t think me or my husband have smiled so much.”

Carlton releases her dreamiest pop ever today with the new EP Blue Pool, which will then be followed by her full-length Liberman in the fall. “I love the idea of turning on music and an album soothing you and lyrics that are for your brain so that’s the kind of album I wanted to make,” Carlton said. The EP is just that; calming, dreamy and incredibly poignant. Perhaps it comes from letting go where Carlton is free to soar at new heights.
