Wanna hit the theater this weekend and be assured that someone out there is creepier than you are? Planning on staying in and wanna watch Kristen Wiig talk about masturbation? Here are Galore’s picks for what to see this week in theaters and on Netflix.

IN THEATERS:

The Gift – August 7th

Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca hall) are a happily married young couple. After a chance encounter with one of Simon’s acquaintances from high school, things start to get a bit strange when they begin to receive gifts at the doorstep of their house as well as uninvited visits that turn dangerous, and Robyn realizes there is a history between this acquaintance and her husband that she doesn’t know. Simon’s ominous acquaintance, Gordo, is played by Joel Edgerton who also directed the film. It’s been getting great reviews so if you want a solid thriller, give it a visit when it hits theaters August 7th with a wide release.

Ricki and the Flash – August 7th

Played by none other than Meryl Streep, rockstar Ricki Rendazzo (say that three times fast) left her family behind to follow her dream of a soaring rock and roll career. When she returns home to reconvene with her husband (Kevin Kline), daughter (Mamie Gummer – Streep’s real life daughter) and son Josh (Sebastian Stan), she realizes that the world of rock and roll may not have been the best choice when it comes to her family and she seeks redemption. Written by the fabulous Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body) and directed by Johnathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs, Rachel Getting Married), it’s doubtful that the film will be a flop. It hits theaters with a wide release on August 7th.

ON NETFLIX:

Welcome to Me – August 6th

Kristen Wiig shows off another one of her absurd characters as Alice Klieg, a single woman with borderline personality disorder who wins an $86 million lottery. Alice goes off her medication, pays $15 million to have her own talk show and from there, bizarre hilarity ensues. With the added bonuses of Linda Cardellini and Wes Bentley, this comedy has been referred to as incredibly underrated. See for yourself when it hits Netflix on Thursday, August 6th.

Leap Year – August 12th

The classic tale of a woman waiting for an overdue marriage proposal is given a twist when Anna (Amy Adams) follows her lover to Dublin to propose to him on leap day, the day in Irish tradition when women are allowed to propose. When she is en route, her plane stops short in Wales and she meets the handsome Declan (Matthew Goode) who could possibly change her mind. The film features an overabundance of clichés, but charming performances from Adams and Goode are worth a watch. If they don’t quite do it for you, watch this solely for the picturesque landscapes of Ireland, in the town of Dingle in particular which I have visited and can definitely say is as gorgeous and charming as it looks onscreen.
