Long before 50 Shades made fetishes mainstream, there was a little known designer called Gianni Versace, who burst onto Miami’s fashion scene in the 90s and liberated the way women dressed. Versace redefined the boundaries of style with bright prints and sleek cuts that showed off the female form, a departure from the giant blazers and shoulder pads of the 80s that, for the most part, did more to hide the body than celebrate it. From a show where supermodels (including Naomi Campbell) stomped the runway in flirty, colorful minidresses shouting “Freedom!” to a controversial collection he called “Miss S&M,” we can thank Mr. Versace for celebrating skin, giving us the right to show nearly whichever body part we feel like leaving uncovered.
Model Daniela Botero and her friend/photographer Camilo Rios White got together to celebrate the good old days of Maison Versace and the provocative style that made the design house famous. “I love the 90s!” Botero said. “Supermodels, high fashion, grunge, hip-hop and neons, all coming together.” The result of their collab was this photoshoot, full of skin tanned from long days of lying out in the Miami rays and body-bearing one pieces. They gave a fresh twist to done-to-death 90s dressing by throwing a Floridian spin a la Versace on their looks. High cut one pieces are essential: to get the look, try styling vintage swimsuits under high waisted shorts, then bring it up to date by throwing on a baseball cap and some white tennis sneakers. “It’s the high waisted attitude!” Botero joked.
