If you haven’t heard of Mayer Hawthorne, I suggest you stop whatever you’re doing, go to iTunes, and get a clue! The Arbor, Michigan born artist’s latest album, Where Does This Door Go, was released on July 16th and hasn’t stopped playing at the Galore office since! His smooth, neo-soul sound will immediately have you dancing around your room singing into your hairbrush (oh come on, you know you do that!). We had a little chat with Mayer just after he started his U.S. tour and got all of the details on what the new album is really about, songs he’s been jamming to, and what he eats on tour. Scroll for more on Mayer and go buy the album now!

How’s touring going? What’s been the most exciting gig so far?

So far, so great.  We’re only about a week in but so far I’d say the best crowd was Chicago.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

I always tell myself and the band how fortunate we are that we get to do this for a living and to celebrate that on stage.  And a little Henny & Gingerale never hurt nobody.

What’s on your tour rider?

Peanut butter & jelly and fruit punch Capri-Suns.

Summer anthem:

14KT “Slo Swerve”

Last album/song you’ve bought:

Kanye West “Yeezus” and Gui Boratto “Too Late (Original Mix)”

Describe the new LP in 5 words:

Where Does This Door Go

What’s your favorite/most personal song on the album and why?

“Reach Out Richard” is the most personal for sure.  It’s a really emotional story about my Dad picking me up from jail.  I still choke up a little sometimes when I sing it during the shows.

What’s the story behind the album’s title, Where Does This Door Go?

It’s about going through that door when you don’t know what’s on the other side.  This album was about me doing something completely different and really going outside of my comfort zone.
