From Hollywood A-listers like Lori Harvey, Meghan Markle, Tracee Ellis Ross and Beyonce, Pilates has been taking the fitness world by storm. Though the reformer machine that gives this branch of pilates its name was invented in the 1920s, it’s been niche – until now. For those who don’t know, Pilates is a low-impact exercise method focusing on core strength, flexibility, and body awareness and was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century.

While it has long been associated with elite dancers and wealthy clientele, black women have historically been underrepresented in the practice due to systemic barriers such as limited access to studios, cultural misconceptions, and financial constraints. However, in recent years, black women have increasingly embraced Pilates as a form of wellness, self-care, and resistance against health disparities. Influential Black instructors and entrepreneurs have worked to make Pilates more inclusive, creating spaces where black women feel seen and supported. Their contributions challenge the traditionally whitewashed image of Pilates and highlight its benefits for Black women’s overall well-being.

If you’re worried about how costly it can get, I’ve got you covered on that. Getting into Pilates doesn’t have to be a monthly car note. Here are some cost-effective ways to become a Pilates Princess this year:

  • Free Online Classes – Platforms like YouTube offer high-quality, instructor-led Pilates workouts for all levels. Channels like Blogilates (Cassey Ho), Move With Nicole, and Lindywell (formerly The Balanced Life) provide great free content. There are tons of creators out there who offer all levels of Pilates content for you to jumpstart your Pilates Princess journey.

  • Affordable Apps & Subscriptions – Apps like FitOn, Alo Moves, and Pilates Anytime offer free or low-cost Pilates classes. Some have free trial periods or budget-friendly monthly plans so make sure to check them out ASAP.

  • Community Classes – Many local community centers, libraries, and nonprofits offer free or low-cost Pilates sessions. Some churches and wellness groups also host donation-based classes as well!

  • At-Home Mat Workouts – Instead of investing in expensive reformers, start with a basic yoga mat and focus on mat Pilates, which still provides strength and flexibility benefits.

  • Social Media & Online Challenges – Instagram and TikTok have many certified Pilates instructors who share free tutorials and workout plans. Following challenges or joining free online groups can add motivation and structure.

  • Library Resources – Don’t forget about your local library girl! Borrow Pilates DVDs or books from your local library for structured, guided workouts at no cost.

  • Student or New Member Discounts – Some Pilates studios offer first-class-free deals, student discounts, or discounted intro packages for beginners.
