Lexi Atkin’s newest single is about moving on from a guy you’ve been undecided on

Being undecided about someone can be frustrating – you may really like the guy, but maybe he’s not the one for you. It could be time to move on, even if you’re not necessarily ready.

Singer and actress, Lexi Atkins, knows this notion all too well. “It’s called ‘Undecided,’ because I was in a relationship, but I wasn’t sure if this was the person I wanted to be with or if it was the relationship I wanted to move forward with,” says Lexi about her newest single.

While the song has a sexy, almost sultry, vibe to it, the lyrics are mainly about a relationship where one person is slowly going their separate way.

We sat down with Lexi to talk about advice within the industry, her time on the Netflix show, “Altered Carbon,” and why the hell she wears so many wigs in her newest music video. Check it out below!

What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve received from another artist?

I think lately the most valuable piece of advice I’ve been given from another artist would be to make sure you know why you’re an artist in the first place. It can be hard sometimes to put so much of yourself creatively into something that sometimes others don’t understand.

But as long as you know what drives you and why that is fulfilling to you, at the end of the day that’s all that matters.

You seem to be very hands on with your work (doing most things yourself). Why is this, and how do you balance it all?

Honestly it’s mostly because my budget is very small. I don’t have a label, or a team behind me currently, so I’ve had to learn to do most things myself. I would love to have others involved, because I know they would definitely do a better job than myself, but again it just hasn’t realistically been something in my ballpark.

Though, because of these hurdles, it’s been an even more amazing journey as an artist. I’ve been able to be more hands on from beginning to end, and the outcome of the work is even more rewarding. It’s not always easy to balance it all to tell the truth, but it is very empowering to get to produce the art that I usually only see in my mind.

Tell us about your time on set of “Altered Carbon.”

It was such a surreal time! From the second I read the script and auditioned for the role, I was hooked to the show. I remember telling my family that even if I didn’t get a call back, I was going to be a die-hard fan of it!

I’m really addicted to sci-fi and anything futuristic, so this obviously was right up my alley. It was also my first time in Vancouver, which I’ve since fallen in love with. The whole cast and crew instantly became like family to me, I literally never wanted to leave set.

What was your favorite part about filming?

I think my favorite part about filming was not only getting to work with such a talented cast and crew, but also the fact that the set we work on is so amazing! The ship where my scenes were filmed literally seemed more realistic than my hotel I was staying in!

It made my job so easy, because that world of the show was clearly painted around me. The only downside was, like I said, I didn’t want to leave! My apartment in LA is definitely not that cool.

Where did you film the music video for “Undecided?”

I filmed at the boutique venue OV3, which is located in the historic Santa Monica Airport’s Lear Building. Inside is an 80-year-old army barrack that once served as the headquarters for Lear Jets and hosted President Roosevelt. Lear used to also meet with Mae West in the same spot we were filming, which I thought was pretty iconic.

You changed your outfit, wig, and basically persona very often in the video. Why is that?

When I first moved here, I wasn’t sure what kind of relationship I wanted to be in. I was basically starting a new life across the country, and in a place like LA, it felt to me that anything was possible. I liked the idea of dreaming about choosing between the ‘fairytale’ of Disney characters I used to love, and from other relationships in films I’ve grown up watching.

In the video, I kind of did my own spin on some of these personas when it came to the style changes. The main girl in the suit tells the story as she dreams about what other relationships and lives there are to live.

You styled the whole video yourself – how did you come up with the outfits?

Well, since I am on a budget, I literally am known for recreating outfits that I already own into something entirely new. Most of the outfits I wore were literally from middle school – I took certain shirts and made them skirts, and vice versa.

I also took old clothes from my brother that he’s grown out of and cut it up and safety pinned it everywhere. Whenever something seems a bit off I just go with it, because usually the outcome turns out to be pretty cool. But again, I’m weird and like things to be different.

You also produce and edit your own videos – how do you balance it all?

Sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming, but I’ve honestly been doing it for quite some time now so I feel like I always get better and better. Also, I have been really lucky to get to work with such amazing teams, even if they’re small. So they make everything really easy at the end of the day.

We’ve also seen you in many movies, working alongside stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Mark Walberg, Amanda Seyfried, and more. You obviously love acting. But, do you prefer acting or music more?

To me, they both work in tandem. I’m really thankful for both careers. When I’m not busy on set or at an audition, I get to be creating musically. Same with the other way around. They help balance my life out, honestly.

You’ve also opened up for big names such as Diplo and Travis Scott. Are you planning on upcoming performances?

There’s nothing set in stone at the moment. I’m still working on releasing music so I can finally start performing again!

What can we expect next from you?

I have a few more singles to release, and then finally my album! It’s been in the works now for about a good year and a half, but again, the whole album I’ve turned into a visual album. And since I’ve had to do a lot of the work myself, it’s unfortunately taken me quite some time now to get everything together. A lot of trial and error, but it’s finally here and almost ready to be shared.

The 5 new fashion trends you need to try this festival season (yes, it’s still festival season)

$

The last days of winter are finally thawing out, and you moved your coats inside the storage room. Whether you went to Coachella or not, festival season is officially back!

For the past month, the return of festivals like Coachella and Stagecoach heralded a new era of festival fashion – especially at Coachella, where more rappers than rockers nabbed the headline slot. Not only is the shift in music evident from the get-go, the attendee fashion has really evolved, too.

If you are planning to hit other festivals, your girl’s got you covered for the five hottest trends that you need to try whether you’re rolling around in the mud at Glasto, moshing at the (final) Warped Tour or digging your toes in the sand at Hang Out.

1. Off to the Races

🤘🏼

A post shared by Taylor Hill (@taylor_hill) on

Looking like a biker babe has never felt this fresh. As Instagram brands (e.g. I AM GIA) have been turning at least more than 50 percent of the population into Ali G wannabes, you can avoid looking like a basic by tucking your tracksuit away.

This season, try swapping your hoodie for a biker tee á la Taylor Hill. You can either pair it with a miniskirt (like Hill) or cutoff shorts, which look badass with a pair of combat boots.

Bamba Swim Racing 2.0 crop tee – $79 AUD ($59.77 USD)

Paradised GT Tee – $88

2. Rainbow a Go Go

I’m not a regular mom I’m a cool mom

A post shared by Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

Since last year, Kylie Jenner has been trying to make neon hair happen at Coachella. This time around, one half of Simi & Haze decided to dip her strands in highlighter yellow dye. Compared to the past beauty trends of festival season that were either polarizing (hello, cultural appropriation!) or basic (e.g. flower crowns), this one is non-offensive, fun and incredibly innovative!

If you plan to do the tips or one section, you can simply get it bleached, attach an extension or rub a gel dye on it. If you plan to go all the way, just get a wig!

3. Puffy Shoulders

Huff, puff and your shoulders are gone in a poof! Hidden by oversized chicken wing-like sleeves, the poufy shoulder top is strangely flattering, feminine, and incredibly fresh in a sea of sweatshirts.

While most of those Princess Di-esque tops scream “mom chic” (in a bad way), you can pair it with a pair of bootcut jeans for a slice of country girl chic or PVC pants for a badass, yet eclectic twist.

Pretty Little Thing Lace Plunge crop top – $10.50

Stone Cold Fox Bond crop – $95

4. Thin Gold Necklaces

pre-cardi lunchin 🌭🍋🌵

A post shared by Gigi Hadid (@gigihadid) on

Delicate gold jewelry is the new choker. Versatile, easy to layer and effortlessly stylish, you have the freedom to play with size. From the thinnest chain necklace to the biggest pair of hoop earrings, you can get away by piling them together for a “more is more” mood.

If Gigi Hadid has already been spotted putting on a bookshelf’s amount of necklaces on her neck, it’s proof that this is not the trend to sleep on. You can either wear it with a bodysuit like the former Galore cover girl or a striped shirt like Miley Cyrus.

Frasier Sterling Summer Love prelayer – $43

Stella and Bow Koko star necklace – $100

5. Chunky Soled Boots

A post shared by SAMI MIRÓ (@samimiro) on

Your favorite childhood staple (read: chunky soled shoes) is back with a vengeance. As puberty has forced you to toss aside your Docs, you regret trading them in for Stan Smiths to avoid being mocked by the popular kids. Now that they’re seeing chunky robber soles stomping the streets, they will regret making fun of you for being so fashion forward.

If you want try this trend, a chunky sole can make or break a look. Play against soft silhouettes (e.g. a white puffy sleeve top) like Sami Miro or go extra like Destiny’s Child, whose GI Jane-themed costume in “Survivor” became a classic since 2001.

I assume you enjoy a great pair of high waisted Levi’s as much as the person, given the fact that you’re living and breathing. But, Maurin Santos Lopez takes her high rise 501’s shaken, not stirred.

Lopez is an artist who’s been painting and drawing since she was a little girl. From drawing naked bodies when she was twelve to portraying afro-Latinx femmes like herself on her clothes, she’s never shied away from expressing herself and has used her art to become the pilot of her own life.

The young artist has found the ultimate means of combining her loves of fashion, painting and self-expression. And the best part? We’re all beneficiaries. We asked her all about the launch of her new collection, what inspires her and, of course, how we might go about getting our hands on one of her custom made pieces.

How did you come up with the name for your business?

So I was having a fashion show, and I had zero idea what to name my clothing line. One of my models suggested that I just use my last name (Santos) but in English (Saints) as the name of the line. And since people often can’t pronounce my first name, they call me “Mar” instead of “Maurín.” Thus, “Saints by Mar” was born.

A post shared by by Maurín Santos López (@saintsbymar) on

Where are you based?

I’m based in the Dominican Republic.

How would you characterize your art?

I like to channel my personality through my art so that people feel empowered, free and confident while they wear my pieces.

I like to think that my art reflects uniqueness, and the way that there’s beauty in everything. For me, art is a way to express how I feel and who I am without talking: so imagine being walking art!

What made you start painting on clothes?

I’ve been painting on canvases, paper and all kind of materials since I was little. I’m a self taught artist, so since I was really young I’ve been painting, drawing, and creating things with my hands. I started painting on my shorts and shirts when I was around nine, but nothing serious.

I began painting on clothing more seriously one day during art class. I accidentally dropped pink paint on my denim jacket. Since it was my favorite jacket, I decided to transform that little incident into art and something that represented me: I wrote ‘Girl Power’ on it, painted a bunch of things, and posted a video of it on my Instagram. When I wore it to school, let me tell you— people were obsessed. So, I started charging them for pieces.

How does your clothing brand empower you?

As an afro-Latina women, I never saw a lot representation of us growing up.

And I’ve always cared about representing minorities, women, immigrants, members of the LGBTQ+ community— groups who I’d seen be oppressed and discriminated against since I was young, both at home and abroad.

So when my teacher tried to kick my friend and me out of my class one day during junior year because we had curly hair (in a country with African descent – I know, it’s crazy) I decided that I could no longer let people try to define me. I started being even more myself and showing young women that no one can be you, and that’s what makes you unique, through clothing or otherwise.

I would definitely say that my art has evolved with the time: my parents have always allowed me to be myself and create whatever I wanted to. Even when I was 12 and drawing naked bodies, they never judged me. So I’ve always been allowed to grow as a person and, in turn, as an artist.

How do you hope your brand impacts young women?

I hope women realize that they don’t need to be submissive  or do something just because society tells them to. We have the power to change the world, to change our future, and to do more than just “exist.”

To support and help each other instead of judge one another or bring ourselves down. I want them to know that this is just the beginning, and no matter what happens, to never stop believing in themselves, because we are the future.

How do you source your clothes?

I like to support local businesses — I try to get most of the clothing from smaller Dominican companies, though some of them are from online vintage stores, etc!

Do you have any role models or muses? Who or what inspires your art most?

Nature, music, places or things that not everyone thinks are “attractive”. Freckles, stretch marks, vitiligo, or what is not considered to be the “perfect body”: No one woman inspires me, we all inspire me.

WELCOMEEEE TO “SAINTS BY MAR” … ESPAÑOL/ENGLISH⤵ … Hola! Muchísimas gracias por TODO el apoyo que cada uno de ustedes me ha ofrecido. “Saints by Mar” empieza hoy, pero los que me conocen o me siguen desde hace mucho saben que eso no es de ahora. Carly Pearce is the cool girl making country music hot again

$

For every decade, country music churns out an “it” girl who defines the sound. Over the past 10 years, the genre’s been the go-to formula for sweethearts who want to break into the mainstream (e.g. Taylor Swift) or do a make-under for their public image (e.g. Miley Cyrus).

However, singer-songwriter Carly Pearce is not just another budding sweetheart in the making.

Unlike her predecessors, Pearce is like your cool older cousin who takes you out to hike in the day, blasts The Collection, and knocks back two glasses of red wine at night. While you may have seen her at Stagecoach or listened to her hit single, “Hide the Wine,” on the radio, you can’t help but to be mesmerized by her fun-loving and charming personality.

In fact, Pearce broke the charts by being the third female to have a #1 debut single for her song, “Every Little Thing,” as a solo artist on a male-dominated country radio. If you haven’t heard of her, just know that she is not here to play.

We sit down with Carly to chat about her never-ending hustle, linking up with Lucy Hale, and the one unlikely musical shero she looks up to (spoiler alert: it’s your favorite ’90s platinum blonde ska kween).

You started out by performing at Dollywood after dropping out of high school at 16, then you moved to Nashville when you were 19. What brought you to pursue a music career while you were in high school?

All I have ever wanted to do was sing country music, so it was always my goal to figure out how to make that happen. When I found the Dollywood opportunity, I knew I could bring it to my parents as a valuable option since it was a paid job.

Since you grew up in Kentucky, when were you first introduced to country music? Compared to all other genres, why did you choose country to pursue?

My mom says the only thing that would keep me from crying as a baby was country music, so I think it was always in my blood. My grandparents loved country and bluegrass music, so I was exposed to artists like Dolly, Loretta [Lynn], Flatt & Scruggs and Emmylou Harris as a young girl.

Although country runs in your musical roots, what surprises me is that you count Gwen Stefani as one of your idols (note: I can sense some “Don’t Speak” era Gwen in “Every Little Thing”). How does she inspire you?

Gwen is such an artist! She has always unapologetically been who she is and I think she paved the way for so many female artists. She’s always pushed the envelope and is willing to put herself out there for her art, all while writing amazing songs. I love her!

Country is now one of the most popular genres that’s influencing pop music whether it be from Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and now, Justin Timberlake. What are your thoughts on pop stars who cross over to country?

I think all artists, no matter what genre, can appreciate the truth and honesty of country music. It’s real, raw, and authentic, so I think as artists in other genres grow in their careers, they want to explore it.

What I love about you is that you make the vibe of each song feel different. For instance, you’re the sad chick on “Every Little Thing,” but in “Hide the Wine,” you’re all flirty and fun. What’s your secret to setting the mood? If you have to pick a song, which one do you prefer?

I love them both! I am a woman in my 20s, which means I have a lot to say. We all have different shades to our personality and different moods and I want to share each of those.

Prior to breaking the charts with “Every Little Thing,” you struggled through a record deal that fell under and you previously mentioned that you cleaned Air BnBs just to support your hustle. While going between job to job, what was the one experience that pushed you to continue your dream?

As weird as it sounds, all I’ve ever wanted is to do this. That’s what drove me to hang in there. I believe I was put on this earth to make country music.

Sisterhood is such a big part of your career – especially since Lucy Hale and Kelsea Ballerini have helped you open doors. What did you learn about yourself when you worked with them and how did they advise you?

I have learned so much from Kelsea and Lucy. In a way, they’ve both helped me fall back in love with music at a time when I was struggling. Lucy took me under her wing and exposed my music to her fans and Kelsea took me as her opening act when I had nothing going on. They’re both amazing inspirations and examples of strong business women, humble hearts and super talents.

Given that you’ve been on a tour bus with them, which movie/TV show would you Netflix and chill to if all of you are in a foreign country?

“This is us.”

If you are to travel outside the states (whether it be for vacation or tour), what are the top three items from your closet that you need to have in your suitcase?

I’d have to have my running shoes, my cell phone, and Orbit gum! I’m addicted.

Now that you broke the charts, scored a record deal with Big Machine, and have a debut album, what can we anticipate for your tour?

I hope people get to know me more as Carly Pearce and not “the girl that sings ‘Every Little Thing.'” I want to have a career as successful and impactful as Dolly, Faith [Hill], Reba [MacEntire] and Trisha [Yearwood]. I hope one day, fans will just know me as “Carly.”

Drag Con, the massive drag and performance art convention, occurred in Los Angeles last weekend.

There was a huge turnout (duh, who doesn’t love drag?) and we got the exclusive from renowned UK drag queen, Jodie Harsh, about the convention – and all the fun people she met throughout the weekend.

Check out the photos and Jodie’s diary of the convention below!

Jodie Harsh

“I spent the weekend at Drag Con, LA’s huge convention celebrating and showcasing all forms of drag and performance art. Everyone’s welcome there, and the atmosphere is both electric and totally welcoming to all.

It was great to walk around and meet people I’ve only seen on Instagram before, shop the marketplace (I have enough lashes to last a lifetime now), see some shows on the runway stage, catch-up with some of my girls from Drag Race, and make new friends.

RuPaul, and the team behind the convention, have created something so gigantic in such a short span of time – I can’t wait to go back (next time in more comfortable shoes!).”

Clothing designer Patrick Church wears his art on his sleeve

The day I bought my Fendi Zucca Chef bag is the day I met Patrick Church.

Not in person, but in art – and not in an untouchable, separated, framed on a wall kind of way. In the most shocking, in your face, tangible way possible. “On a Birkin bag! Blasphemy!”, I cried.

Yes, the designer Patrick Church paints his art onto Birkins, Louis Vuitton pillows, and more, making his art quite shocking (many people have the same reaction as I did).

let me ruin ur Birkin

A post shared by PATRICK CHURCH (@patrickchurchny) on

It wasn’t long after that dramatic gasp that I slowly began to accept how Church’s flamboyant and colorful characters had complimented the stoic, iconic accessory. Simply put, both of these works of art, worked.

So, when a very good friend of mine asked for suggestions on how to upgrade her Kelly bag, I immediately tagged Patrick Church. And, of course, the connection was a match made in fashion heaven. Who wouldn’t want to fuck up a Kelly bag with their next-level art?

SZA wore his feathered trim pants to one of her performances, Teyana Taylor wore his leather jacket to Coachella, influencer/model Jazelle added him to her wardrobe, and the Jenner sisters were also donning his work.

I spoke to the New York based purveyor of art and fashion to learn more about his skill and what’s next for him.

Are you self-taught? Or did you go to school for your craft? Which school?

I started at school but I left. It was a long journey, but ultimately I knew what I wanted to do. I also didn’t like being told what to do. I actually credit my high school teacher when I was in England for believing in me completely and letting me do my thing.

What is the one advice you wish you had coming up as an artist?

That you can’t be amazing at everything, and to listen to others.

Singer Jena Rose is living every teenage girl’s dream. At just 17 years old, the singer has toured with the likes of the Plain White T’s, AJR, Why Don’t We, and most currently, Indie-pop sensation Echosmith.

Plus, she gets to do it all with her boyfriend/drummer Hunter Knoche. Talk about goals AF.

While most upcoming artists tend to be hand-created by labels and PR teams, Jena seems to stick pretty true to her own style, which was one of the first things I noticed about her when we’d met on the NYC leg of the Inside a Dream tour.

In fact, Jena actually styles her tour wardrobe all on her own, with the help of her mom. I recently chatted with Jena about her tour wardrobe planning process, what it’s been like being on the road and her new EP, “Reasons.”

You’re on tour with Echosmith right now, how has that been?
It’s amazing! It’s the longest tour I’ve been on and I really feel like I’m learning and growing so much!

Sydney (Sierota, lead singer of Echosmith) is a another strong female artist. Have you taken anything away from her or the group in general? Have they offered you any advice?

It’s always great to meet and be around a strong female artist. I feel like I can relate to her so much and she has been so sweet! The group is all so welcoming and have taught me a lot in such a short amount of time.

You have a new EP out called “Reasons” – can you tell us a little bit about it?

“Reasons” is a collection of 7 songs I wrote on my piano in my bedroom. Each one tells a different, unique story and I hope listeners can relate to it!

How has the crowd responded to performing some of the songs live?

The crowds have been incredible! I’ve been trying different techniques to get them involved and having fun! It’s been so rewarding putting all of my energy into each show and watching the crowd’s reaction.

I heard you style your own wardrobe for tour! What are some essential pieces you take with you on the road?

My mom and I have been a team with planning outfits for the tour! Since it’s 25 shows, I can’t wear a different outfit each show, so we’ve been having to find the perfect statement pieces to mix and match with! Some essential pieces are crop tops and wide legged, colorful pants!

Do you keep any emergency beauty products in your bag/suitcase?

I always have a nail file, eyelash glue, and chapstick in my bag at all times!!

Do you like to plan out what you wear for shows or is it more of a spur of the moment situation?

Somedays I know exactly what I want to wear and then other days I just throw something together and hope it works! It’s all about finding whatever makes me feel the most confident everyday.

READ ALSO: Your favorite jeans from the ’00s are officially back in style

I notice you wear a lot of bright colors and fun patterns and textures. What’s your key to making that look work without being too over bearing?

I love catching the audience’s eye on stage! If I wear patterned pants, I try to pair them with a solid top to balance it off. If I wear a more simple outfit one day, I might add sparkles to my eye makeup! It’s just about being spontaneous, while also slightly simplistic.

Do you ever get fashion inspiration from the people in the audience or fans you meet on the road?

Yes, I do! I get to meet so many people with different styles that inspire me so much. I love putting my own spin of the trends I see on the road!

Lastly, If you had to wear one outfit every night on tour, what would it be and why?

I’d wear my I.AM.GIA 2 piece Polaris set with my giant yellow faux fur coat over! It’s my favorite outfit to wear on stage since it is so bright and fun! And I always love to throw on a fun coat to add a bit of my personality to my outfits.

Instagram’s favorite sex ed blogger just dropped a zine that every young adult should read

If you didn’t already know, Instagram mogul Eileen Kelly turned her IG handle, @killerandasweetthang, into a highly successful sex-ed blog inspired by her teenage days scrolling through Tumblr.

After receiving critical success from her fan base and beyond, Kelly decided she would take her brand to the next level, by releasing an exclusive print zine. “I had never made a zine before and one day I was just like, ‘I want to hold something in my hand!’ I want to be able to put the work we do on my coffee table,” said Eileen.

READ MORE: Which Sex And The City character are you based on your sex toy preference?

She ironically titled the zine “Pull Out,” to comment on the methods young people use due to their lack of sexual education. Eileen believes that the physical medium of a book will make this kind of education more accessible and distributable to older generations.

People are just going to be more familiar with a less virtual and digitized format. “The change we are trying to catalyze goes beyond just Gen Z and millennials, we want to reach the parents that have raised us and the teachers who have taught us,” Eileen said.

While KAAST operates more as a resource, Eileen and her team to try something different with “Pull Out.” “It’s more artistic than the site and you have to read a bit deeper into it. I think it will serve both young people and people of an older generation. It’s an interesting take on the lives that we live,” Eileen said.

“I think that it’s incredibly important for young people to have the opportunity to chime in on their own sex lives and generation, and that these opinions can be captured and distributed in a book form.”

The zine dives into more topics not yet discussed on the site, such as sex work, particularly, how social media has changed and influenced its stigma. Eileen believes that too often in the media, middle-aged people put are putting the youth down and dictating the sex-stratosphere with unrealistic and uninformed ideas.

“I think it’s important that we hear from the generation that is actually experiencing the sexual meets digital revolution. Perhaps their stories will even educate and influence these middle-aged people. Everyone has a story to tell and a viewpoint,” she said.

The main insight Eileen hopes readers will gain from the zine is just how complex this moment in time is. She strongly believes that the psychological effects that draw from our current obsession with technology will be studied for the rest of time. “We are the guinea pigs of this cultural shift. How we speak, communicate, meet, our attention spans; all changing rapidly,” she said.

The zine is available to purchase online, making it even more accessible to everyone. “I’m hoping that those who purchase the zines will share them. I think it would be cool to find one on a park bench or in your school library. Some place that a person might pick up the book because of the alluring cover, and have the chance to learn from the content,” Kelly said.

Singer Alexx Mack created a collective called “Born to be Nasty,” for people who feel they are different

If you happen to be sassy, comfy in your own skin, and authentic to who you are, you’ve probably made someone else feel uncomfortable by accident. But what do you do when you aren’t sorry for being yourself?

Singer Alexx Mack has been making music for years, but she recently noticed that she seemingly made the people around her uncomfortable. Instead of hiding from it, Alexx wrote a song called, “Uncomfortable.”

“I just always used to wonder why I made people, specifically traditional women and most men, uncomfortable? From the way I expressed myself physically, to the passion I had about my art and helping people. One day I sat down with my friend Haleigh Bowers and shared with her my thoughts on making others “Uncomfortable.” We wrote the song in under an hour,” explains Alexx Mack.

READ ALSO: Instagram’s favorite sex ed blogger just dropped a zine that every young adult should read

But Alexx took it one step further, and besides including the lyrics, “born to be nasty” in the song, she also created a collective for all of us who seemingly give no fucks when it comes to being our authentic selves.

Alexx calls the collective (what else?) “Born to Be Nasty,” and she even released these cute AF hats that you can buy so you can show your support for the cause. Alexx says, “‘Born to be nasty’ means that you are living your most authentic, inclusive, and loving life. No matter how ‘nasty’ that makes you to people who don’t understand,” Alex says on the phrase.

“We’re turning that word into something positive and inspiring. We’re owning our differences while educating ourselves and supporting the differences of others — we’re creating a community of like minded people,” explains Alex of the cause.

Check out her song, “Uncomfortable,” here, and peep our exclusive interview with Alexx below.

Why do you think this is an important cause and who else is involved?

I think we are in dire need for a community like the one we are trying to build. A place of safety for the LGBTQIA community and for women.  I’m an LGBTQIA ally and a woman who’s a survivor of sexual assault. There’s so much support that can be shared through one group of people to another.

A place for people to bond over similarities and differences without judgement. So far I’ve had the support of a lot of artist friends. From filmmakers, to songwriters, to performers, and photography. We had a photo shoot the other weekend and I can’t wait to share it with the world.

Where can people buy the hat and support?

Check out our Instagram @weareBTBN – the hats go on sale shortly.

What advice do you have for people who feel out of place or “Uncomfortable”?

It took a lot of time for me to finally start loving myself for all the things that make me, me. I think the first sliver of advice I have would be to really make sure you show yourself love. Whether it’s self care or daily mantras.

Do you think that sometimes taking a “hiatus” from things is the best decision to make?

Absolutely. I wouldn’t be in the place that I’m in mentally and creatively without taking a break. We have to start asking us why the things we love make us stressed. It’s all derived from fear. I was afraid to stop putting out music but I really needed to experiment with different creative routes.

What’s next for you?

I’m really excited to put out a bunch of singles. I’ve been working on the songs with producer Alex Flagstad and we’re itching to put them out. I’m making really personal visuals for the music and I’m gonna be playing some shows, too. I’m also planning a large outdoor event for “Born To Be Nasty” that we’re gonna announce this summer.

Milano wants women to know you don’t need a man to get things done

Milano has made a name for not only herself but her luxury streetwear brand – all on her own.

Milano is known for her clothing brand, Milano Di Rouge, which gives you the perfect mixture between tomboy and sexy. Milano Di Rouge has the streets talking and wanting more and more of what the Philly native can create.

We sat down with her to talk about how she got her start in the fashion industry, the black women’s image in media, dealing with haters, and all things Milano Di Rouge.

If you keep it trill you get a blessing for it.

A post shared by Milano Di Rouge (@iammilanrouge) on

What’s your background and how would you describe what you do? Tell us your story.

I started out blogging about love, dating, fashion, etc. and I would connect with different types of entrepreneurs. Three months later, I started Milano Di Rouge. My role is that I’m the owner and creator. My initial vision was to have a diverse brand and didn’t want anyone to know I was the owner.

But I had little to no money so I had to model and do everything. I started out with t-shirts and never compared myself with the locals. Instead, I looked at Billionaire Boys Club and bigger companies because that’s who I wanted to be my competition.

What void do you feel you’re fulfilling in the fashion industry?

Authenticity. A lot of people are scared to be themselves. They wanna copy and paste different formulas. I’ve always wanted to create what I wanted and being that I’m not an average designer, the things I do go beyond fashion design.

You use your platform to not only discuss fashion but to bring light to issues within society as well as uplifting young women. What made you do this and how has this helped or hindered your brand?

By me using my brand to promote positive messages I wouldn’t say it has hindered my brand but it has put me on an unwanted platform to be a role model. I didn’t plan on this happening. I’ve just always been this way towards my friend, Instagram just allowed everyone to see what I do an it allows me to help even more people.

What made me decide to bring to light various things in addition to fashion was me wanting to share my journey and show people that are from the hood it is possible to make something of your life. In media all over the world,  black women are portrayed very negatively in various outlets.

I try to use my platform to show young girls you can become successful without degrading yourself or doing things out of your character. I just want women to know you don’t need a man to do anything, when you focus and work hard you will get things done.

READ ALSO: Cashmere built Beauty Bakerie while working a 9-to-5

As you began to grow in popularity, did you have to change anything about yourself or your mindset to become successful?

I had to get rid of negativity. Growing up in the hood we were never taught to uplift each other. I had to train my mind to see positivity and to become a positive person. Whenever someone is talking shit about me I just ignore it because I am so happy with who I am I can’t allow an unhappy person to ruin my day or mood.

In your recent annual fashion show you had a plus size model, why was this important for your brand and what are your views on the fashion industry’s current climate on plus size clothes/models?

To be honest I’ve had a plus size model for majority of my shows. Representation is important and plus size women comment on my page all the time when I go up to 2x. Certain items I don’t carry in anything larger than a L because my company doesn’t have the audience for it.

I use models that represent my clients, white, Asian, black, short and tall, I want my clients to see themselves whenever I do a fashion show or in my marketing. I feel like now more than ever people are starting to take notice that plus size women matter. I love how Fashion Nova has a plus line.

Being a public figure, you deal with just as much hate as you do love. How do you handle this and how long has it taken you to adjust to this lifestyle?

As far as the hate, I use it to go harder. I don’t ever want to be in a position to hate on someone else. That’s a miserable space to be in so I just pray for those type of people. The bigger I become the hate grows but so does the love.

Idgaf what a hater says because you can’t make them a believer but you can make them a witness to your success, my father taught me that. Some of the people hating on me were in the audience of my fashion show! The haters are your marketing team, they’re the ones keeping tab on what you have going on.

What do you really want your followers to take away from this interview?

I want everyone to realize that if I can do it you can as long as you have the will to win. Once you figure out what you wanna do you find out why so when shit gets hard that why pushes you through. I don’t ever wanna stop dreaming I just want to constantly evolve.

A post shared by Marketing Strategist (@hellobarbie) on

What’s your background and how would you describe what you do? Tell us your story.

My initial background is in public relations – that’s what I went to college for. When I first got out of school, my focus was PR. But, after a while, I changed my mind and got into real estate.

I then decided to go into commercial cleaning and owned a super profitable company for 3 years, where I had over 23 contracts. But, then I wanted to move to LA. So I literally sold all the contracts and started networking and I started my next business venture, Phone Fancy, which I still have today.

Within the past year so many women have been reaching out to me asking to help build their brands and how to properly market because I took something as simple as phone cases and created a million dollar business.

A lot of women are selfish with their formula to success once they reach a certain level. Why have you decided to teach women entrepreneurs how to start their own business?

I honestly feel like someone else being successful won’t take away from my success. I’ve always been the type who’s down to help others. I’m not a hater, so helping my friends and people I don’t know came naturally to me.

People are always like wtf do you do and how else do you make money? It literally all started from selling phone accessories that I have this platform to not only make my brand more successful but to teach other young women how to make money as well.

Do you wish you had a business mentor or someone who can guide you through the process like you do for others? Or do you think not having much guidance or someone to lean on helped you more in the long run?

Of course I wish I had a “me” for myself, because I did waste a lot of money, but I’m glad I had to take this journey. I traveled to China 4 times to meet with vendors, learning the culture, experiencing a vendor flake out on me because the order was too much, seeing first hand how vendors do business, and making global connections.

These are things I wouldn’t have been able to do if someone just handed me the blue print. But, I’m glad to be that bridge for that business owner who can’t take multiple trips to China or waste hundreds of dollars trying to find the right product.

How did your brand blow up and how does social media help your business make money?

I made Phone Fancy “a thing,” because when I started it wasn’t hundreds of people doing it. People loved the phone accessories because when I came around the iPhone 4 was around, Amazon wasn’t big like that and no one was providing super cute accessories for the new iPhone trend.

Even now, girls will always want a cute phone case and there isn’t a super known person for selling phone accessories like it is for hair extensions, makeup, or clothes. I had a pretty good following on social media from living in Atlanta and LA so I began reaching out to celebrities and influencers who I could have easy access to. They were happy to promote my products on social media in exchange for various cases, and it grew from there.

READ ALSO: How SnobLife’s Ming Lee Made Herself a Million

You are now friends with Rihanna, how did that happen?

Really through social media. Even till this day I’m still like how did that happen, because the very first time that I met her was at her house. She invited me and my best friend to her studio which was actually in her home – she had a Halloween party in LA. Her driver picked us up and the friendship really grew from there.

It’s crazy because when you’re around her it’s like you know that she is a celebrity but she makes you feel so regular like she’s your sister. She is real af and as busy as she is, she always makes time for the people she cares about – which makes me love her more.

I said bae it’s a snack he said it’s an entree 💰

A post shared by Marketing Strategist (@hellobarbie) on

Where did your nickname “Hello Barbie” come from? Why do you prefer this over your real name?

When I was young af I was super girly and did charm school, cooking classes, etc. and my aunt started calling me “Barbie.”

I didn’t have a business page at first so when people would shout out my products they would tag me. Then, all the celebrities I became cool with and my friends all followed me on there so my followers grew from that. I remember a friend I use to have told me to change my name because it was childish and I was like, bitch! Rihanna follows “Hello Barbie,”  I’m not changing shit!

For people who attend your classes, buy your e-books, or book your coaching call – what can they expect to gain?

Working with me, you’re going to gain the knowledge you can’t easily find on the internet to start and run a profitable business. I always cater to my clients. I don’t like talking about myself for hours so my classes are about you, your business struggles, and we talk about resourceful ways that literally work to make a successful business.

Tell us about a difficult time in your life that you overcame and explain how you did so.

The most difficult time I can remember was having my own store. I knew phone repair would be a good add on for my business and would attract more customers. But, in that time frame of having my store which was for less than a year, I hired and fired over 25 technicians in my first 3 months.

It was so difficult that I got to the point where I literally didn’t want to do it anymore. I’m glad I got the experience of having employees and learning the ins and outs of being a store owner, but it just wasn’t for me.

What do you really want your followers to take away from this interview?

Please go for whatever goals you have. So many people say they’re scared and want to start something but can’t and you’re only cheating yourself with that mindset. We’re young, we don’t have to have it all figured out, but start working towards something.

I’m 33 and I’m just figuring out what I want to do, I’ll start something and move on if I no longer feel fulfilled or interested. Network with influencers and market your brand the right way, you don’t have to have a huge social media following to become financially successful.

The new Urban Decay Beached collection is more versatile than you’d think

Here at Galore, we are, obviously, big fans of Urban Decay (who isn’t?). So, when they released their newest Beached collection, I knew I wanted to try it out.

With most beach-inspired makeup, I don’t always find them to be the most versatile. Usually they include bronzers that are too much, lips that are overly glossy, and palettes that are honestly, very plain.

I grew up in San Diego on the beach, and I know what kind of look is meant to be achieved with beach-inspired makeup. The look is meant to be easy, lightly bronzed, and dewey. You’re supposed to look like you just hopped out of the water after a long, effortless day of surfing, and now you’re headed to have avocado toast with your skater boyfriend who has washboard abs.

Many collections simply drop the ball.

The shades of summer have us like 🤤 🌊🏝☀Beached Eyeshadow Palette #UrbanDecay #Makeup

A post shared by Urban Decay Cosmetics (@urbandecaycosmetics) on

Upon receiving the Urban Decay Beached collection, I was immediately impressed. The tones of the palette made me feel like I was back in SD with my toes in the sand. They are warm, comforting hues of gold, nudes, and browns, mixed with vibrant blues and some gorgeous pinkish colors.

The palette alone is extremely versatile – you can do a natural, I-woke-up-like-this glam, or a dramatic, moonlight-on-the-beach glam. The palette only has 8 colors, but it’s so diverse in it’s colors that you can pull off pretty much any beachy vibe you wish.

The collection also includes 2 eye pencils, 3 lip colors, and 2 bronzers. I am easily swayed by an amazing palette, but I am a big critic of eye pencils, lips, and bronzers – mainly because there are so many ways the product can be terrible.

For the eye pencils, I was surprised at how silky they were! The pencils slide right onto my eyelid with (actually) no effort at all. They didn’t clump, they were soft, and they lasted me a long ass night of running around NYC. Aka, I was a sweaty mess, and this eyeliner passed the test.

The pencils also didn’t run, which is a huge plus in my book. Most pencils that are softer tend to smudge and screw up the whole look by the end of the night. These pencils didn’t, and therefore are the best of both worlds.

Lips. Man, am I critical of lips. This is probably because most really good lips are hard to come by. I like a lip that doesn’t dry you out, that is smooth, and again, that lasts me all night. The collection includes a nude, sort of sheer lip, a bronze, metallic, sheer lip, and a bright, coral color.

The nude lip, Tower 1, is very sheer, which I personally am not a total fan of. But, on the lips, it’s really gorgeous for a simple, clean look – aka, that surfer babe vibe I was talking about. This lip will make your look polished and put together in a really effortless way.

The metallic lip, Heatwave, makes me want to pose in a bikini by the ocean for a quick Insta thot pic. I can definitely fux with this lip. It’s not thick, it’s hydrating, and it lasted me through a pasta dinner (the biggest test of them all).

The coral lip, 100 Degrees, is def a vibe, even though I’m not a coral lip kind of gal. Again, this lip lasts for a hot minute, and all three of them are super hydrating and go on smoothly.

The bronzer comes in a light and dark shade, making this entire collection accessible to most skin tones. In my opinion, they could have maybe included one more shade that was a bit darker to be a bit more inclusive. But still, these bronzers are really nicely made. They are perfect for that extra glow for those summer days (when, if you’re pasty af like me, you’re finally tan enough to wear a bronzer, lol).

Check out the Beached collection at Urban Decay, Sephora, Ulta, and more, and see for yourself if this will turn you into the beach goddess that you are this summer.

Fitness model Sommer Ray on competition, getting off track, and her new clothing line

Even if you aren’t a gym rat, you’ve likely heard of Sommer Ray.

With 18.3 million Instagram followers, the 21 year-old fitness model isn’t exactly lowkey. She got her start competing in the National Physique Committee (or, if you’re versed in ath-lingo, the ‘NPC’ for short) at just 16. She’s since used her platform to set herself apart by carving out her own niche, staying true to who she is, and blocking out the noise.

In short, she’s killing it. We spoke to Sommer about her recent successes, how she deals with insecurity, and what some of her newest endeavors are – both personally and professionally.

So how did you get into fitness? Was it always something you knew you wanted to pursue?

My mom and dad are both huge into fitness and I followed in their footsteps. My dad was a body builder and was my coach when I competed in the NPC (National Physique Committee). My mom and I did my first competitions together, so I guess you could say it’s in my blood.

A post shared by Sommer Ray (@sommerray) on

How do you stay motivated, both in fitness and other endeavors? How do you deal with a lack of motivation?

I feel that people lose motivation when they get motivated for the wrong reasons. Girls may want to workout for that summer bod, or after going through a bad breakup. But I always make sure my motivation comes from the intent of my wanting to better myself.

What is your daily fitness routine, and how often do you workout? Do you have any favorite workouts?

I workout atleast 4/5 times a week. I can’t really say I have one favorite exercise, but I love any exercise where I can really isolate my glutes!

What’s your favorite workout day (leg, back, abs, etc.)?

Legs for sure.

Do you have any current fitness goals?

I’ve gotten off track recently, which is normal, so I don’t beat myself up about it. But I want to put my muscle mass back on and I am making strides in that direction everyday!

How about your personal goals?

I’m starting a clothing line I’m really excited about! So for all the girls always asking “where’d you get that” I’m gonna bring my closet to you guys!

Was it hard to find your place in the fitness industry? Have you faced any major challenges along the way?

For me it wasn’t ever too tough, given that I carved out my own path at a young age.

What is the number one fitness mistake you think people make?

People get so caught up in other things they forget the most important part of working out: FORM. Form is everything.

In the fitness industry, I imagine it’d be hard not to compare yourself to others. How do you cope, and what are some of your tips for staying confident?

I started competing in the NPC when I was 16 years old. I stood next to girls in their 20s/30s and was being compared to them, yet nothing was comparable- we were simply at different stages of life (muscle doesn’t mature until you’re in your 20s). So believe me, I know what that feeling is like.

But honestly, I never compared myself, so it didn’t matter that the judges did. I was confident in the hard work and the dedication I put in for myself. So at the end of the day, I know myself and I’m content in the woman I am. And when you are, you are incomparable.

My only competition is myself and wanting to better myself everyday.

Who are your biggest role models?

My mom is for sure my biggest role model, and also my dad. And I’m so thankful to them for their love and support and the foundation they’ve given me in fitness.

So the world’s largest online thrift store just got a reboot that you need to see

Thrift shopping is basically the most underrated sport of our time: it more or less requires all of the same agility, intuition and physical ability than American football does.

That being said, newsflash, em dash — it’s 2018, and life is whole a lot easier than it once was. Thrifting doesn’t require that same agility anymore, and no, you don’t have to physically fight with someone for that amazing 1992 Dior top.

This is all thanks to platforms like thredUP, an online thrift store whose mission is to make thrift shopping a fast, easy, and fun experience for all humans.

And now, aside from the huge selection the site offers ranging from pins to clogs to coats to Dolce & Gabbana jeans, thredUP offers their own exclusive line of recycled tees. The site partnered with 12 artists — including but not limited to a New Yorker cartoonist, a professional meme-er, and a designer at J. Crew — to rework 1,000 used tees and turn them into these:

The concept behind the collection was an all-too familiar one: climate change. Not only is the retail industry’s reliance on the constant, hurried production of new goods is not only excessive, it’s horridly unsustainable.

For thredUP’s re:made collection, each of the 12 artists featured in the collection were asked to react to the statement “climate change is not real.” Judging by the t-shirt graphics, there were a wide variety of feelings and interpretations:

100% of the re:made collection’s net proceeds go to the environmental non-profit. Cool Effect, supporting global projects that offset carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

Basically, with the help of Cool Effect, each and every thredUP re:made t-shirt purchased results in a carbon reduction equivalent to planting 95 trees that live for a decade.

Pretty cool.

Some of your favorite celebrities have been touting the t-shirts in the hopes of spreading awareness of the fact that climate change is very real, and that we are all responsible.
Here’s what Nikki Reed had to say about it:

Though the reality of climate change is an extremely tragic one, projects like these also provide hope for the future: thredUP‘s 2018 Resale Report spilled all kinds of tea on the increasingly tense, antithetical relationship between the retail and resale industries.

According to the report, the resale market is growing, and fast. 1 in 3 women shopped secondhand last year, and the $20B resale market will likely reach $41B by 2022. And do you really want to gag? Resale is projected to be larger than Fast Fashion by 2027. That’s insane.

Zara is quite literally trembling. What’s more, organizations like thredUP continue to lead the way in terms of challenging the fashion industry and forcing us all to take a look at how our shopping habits impact others.

Mari Andrew, one of the illustrators featured in the collection, spoke more about this “I hope by expressing my own despair over the ignorance of climate change, other people will tap into their own empathy and work for a better, kinder future,” she says.

Logan Henderson from Big Time Rush is back with a sexy new sound

You most likely know Logan Henderson from his time in the band and on the hit Nickelodeon Series, “Big Time Rush,” since BTR had most American preteen gals swooning.

But, Logan has since totally transformed his vibe and sound, and he is now releasing his own music. Logan’s debut solo album is officially out today, titled, “Echoes of Departure and the Endless Street of Dreams Pt. I” – the album is meant to reflect on his past and his dreams, and he wants to make sure it’s very truthful to who he is.

A second part of the album is going to be released later this year, so make sure to follow along with Logan and his socials for updates about the release.

We sit down with Logan to discuss the inspiration behind his new album, and what his favorite song is about. Check it out below!

Tell us about your new album!

“Echoes of Departure and the Endless Street of Dreams Pt. I” is the first installment of stories that I’ve written for my project. In the beginning, I was just writing for myself and wasn’t sure if I would release anything at all.

I started making music that took me back to my roots, music that was truthful and resonated with me. It quickly became apparent that I needed to share it and put it out.

What’s the inspiration behind the album?

A lot of the inspiration came from the dreams I was having and the need to find closure with certain ideas, relationships, and aspects of my past. I had the best time making this album with my closest friends and only hit the studio when I felt like there was something I really wanted to write about and share.

What is your favorite song on Part 1?  What is it about?

“Evergreen” is one of my favorite songs from Pt. I. It really shows a side of confidence/ freedom and vulnerability/insecurity from line to line that I think everyone goes through after a relationship. The song is written in a way that makes it very hard to be about any one thing.

I would love for the people listening to fashion their own ideas around it, but the main thing I want them to take away as a whole would be not all love is meant to last.  The love you shared with someone is different and special from anyone else and that idea is something for you to keep forever. A love so strong it changes the fibers of your being.

All this buzz about the Royal Wedding (THE DAY IS HERE!) has us wondering about how glamorous Meghan is about to be (let’s talk about that rock on her finger rn).

You would think that Meghan and her princess sister-in-law would have really expensive and unattainable skincare routines, because duh, they’re royalty. I picture them rubbing La Mer products all over their bodies.

If you have also wondered about what products the royals use (you know you have) to achieve their natural, but flawless skin or their thick, glossy hair, you’re in luck. We have the list of Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton’s beauty must-haves, and and they’re surprisingly affordable!

Royals, they’re just like us!

Kate Middleton’s fave eyeshadow palette is none other than the OG everyday palette, Urban Decay’s Naked Palette ($54), which is currently on sale at Sephora for $19! With over 8k reviews and a 4.8 out of 5 stars, even if you don’t believe the hype, the numbers don’t lie.

Included in this palette are 12 shadows ranging from various bronzed-hued colors to black, so you can create a warm, natural vibe (like Kate) or a super smokey cat eye.

Also, since Kate is always on the go, she needs a spray that will hold her glossy, wavy curls in place. Lately, she’s been living for L’Oréal Paris’ Elnett Satin Hairspray Extra Strong Hold Precious Oil ($15). With over 400 reviews and  91% satisfactory rate, it feels good to know your hair can be as bomb as a royals for less than $20.

The royal-to-be, Meghan Markle, is all about her healthy, gorgeous hair, and she’s relying on Kérastase Nutritive collection ($17-53) to get the job done. Some products that are currently in her rotation include their Bain Satin 1 ($30) shampoo, which targets dry hair and provides nutrition.

She also loves the Lait Vital ($17-34), which is great for normal to dry hair. The product includes a dose of the Irisome Complex to nourish and soften the hair fiber without weighing it down (perfect for the wedding day).

If you’re in need of a good deep conditioner, Meghan is using their Nutritive Masquintense ($53), which is perfect if you have dry and damaged hair. As the weather warms up, we have to prepare for frizzy hair but Kérastase’s Serum Oléo-Relax ($40) is Meghan’s go-to for preventing or taming her frizzy fly aways.

10 looks that prove bike shorts are the new it-pants

The term “fashionable bike shorts” is no longer an oxymoron.
Bike shorts, like many arbitrary clothing articles, are not typically esteemed for their “hip nature” so much as they are for their practicality. I mean, from a cyclist’s perspective, they’re the shit: comfortable, functional, flexible — what’s not to love?
Except for the fact that they arguably embody one of the most awkward silhouettes presently in existence. I’m not sure whether it’s the halfway crop or the fact that I can’t not affiliate them with my dad, pre-bike ride.
In either case, they’re back. In a big, big, way actually. And after some research (scrolling through Instagram) and some self-reflection, I’ve come to realize that they’re surprisingly wearable and are really just a cute Summer alternative to the legging, it’s fuller-legged cousin. Here’s what’s happening:

1. Kourtney’s breakout Coachella moment

#yeezyseason7

A post shared by Kourtney Kardashian (@kourtneykardash) on

Okay, I thought I’d start with this because let’s be honest: this trend isn’t not because of Yeezy. I mean, we all remember the Kim Clone Kampaign that saw all of your favorite models and influencers dressed like this:

#YEEZYSEASON6 #ad

A post shared by lindsey (@lindseypelas) on

And honestly, I feel like this is where the trend really kicked off. This entire campaign and collection basically introduced the idea that bike shorts are a cute, elevated article of clothing, and then reinforced said idea using like 30 different influencers. Check mate, Kanye.

2. This ultra-casual-hoodie-and-bike-short-emphasis-on-the-bike-short situation

While the bike shorts have a relatively muted presence in this outfit, they also simultaneously make the outfit – if that makes sense (it does not). Like, I feel like leggings would have been to easy but the simple black bike shorts make it so interesting. This amazing look also confirms that bike shorts work very well in the context of streetwear.

3. This incredible yellow gray and white moment

Again, bike shorts and streetwear are the happily married couple you kind of anticipated but are also still super surprised to see together. The greatness of this look kind of speaks for itself, but it’s definitely safe to say that bike shorts have never looked this cool.

4. This Kith Sport ensemble

❤

A post shared by Emily Ratajkowski (@emrata) on

If you haven’t already checked out the new Kith sportswear, it’s fire. The collection includes but is not at all limited to dope pieces like these, and seems to be a more literal interpretation of the term “athleisure.” Like, this outfit is arguably just a sports bra and some bike shorts: but it’s a look, nonetheless.

5. And we’ve come full circle

KardashianMood

A post shared by Ares (@aresaixala) on

Wait, is this photo not a part of the #YeezySeason6 campaign?

This is super meta given the fact that Ares of @aresaixala has deemed this look a “KardashianMood™.” Truuue. More evidence to back up my aforementioned thesis re Kanye re Kim re Kourtney re this. Trust me, I think the Kardashians get way too much credit when it comes to setting trends: that being said, this one in particular is Characteristically Calabasas™.

6. DUA

Last night of this Asia run. Tokyo 🖤

A post shared by DUA LIPA (@dualipa) on

I saw this look and all but audibly gasped. This is such a great outfit, especially for Tokyo. This is taking the bike short trend and flipping it on its head in the best way: like, sure I’ll wear bike shorts, over a similarly body-conscious moon print bodysuit. As one does.

7. If plaid is the new black, then bike shorts are the new pants

plaid is the new black lol

A post shared by Tamella Konovalova (@tamella_k) on

This is proof that a bike short can be dressed either up or down. This particularly outfit highlights the bike short’s potential to be fancy, and I’m very much into it.

8. See?

🍕

A post shared by HEIR JORDYN (@jordynwoods) on

You almost don’t notice them in this pic, but Jordyn Woods styled them almost the same way. They actually work really well with a blazer, some sneakers (if you have the Chanel ones, great. If not, also great) and a cute bag. I’d even argue that this look is—gasp—borderline formal. We’re really making strides here, no pun intended (get it? because they’re bike shorts).

9. Bike shorts + Converse + Crewneck = Potential Spring Uniform

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside..

A post shared by Faye Olivia Waddick (@fayewad) on

This is the perfect example of effectively dressing down the bike short. This outfit is insanely cute and really put together, and could work on almost anyone. Are bike shorts growing on you yet? They are, aren’t they? They are. Don’t lie.

10. Is a vacation flex sans bike shorts really a vacation flex?

Firstly, this teeee. Secondly, these bike shorts.

While gray and black seem to be the people’s colors of choice, this checkerboard is a really good look.

It’s become painfully clear that bike shorts are our choice clothing article this Spring season, and we may as well embrace it. It’s a versatile trend, to say the least.

You have my official blessing to wear your bike shorts to the beach, to the club, or to a dinner: just maybe not in that order.

New Beat Fund, aka NBF, is trying to disrupt the capitalism of the music industry

NBF, known as New Beat Fund, is not just another newly formed band trying to break the Internet.

Rather than uploading songs on streaming sites to gain instant popularity, Jeff and Paul Laliberte (who are my brothers from another mother) alongside their friend Shelby Archer made NBF to disrupt the cold capitalism of the music industry.

Together, they produce, mix, engineer, write, dabble with multiple instruments, and record their own songs to compile “Chillanthropy,” a three-part EP. Packed with beachy bangers, you can hear bouncing drum-like beats, slick guitar riffs, and head-turning lyrics that make you want to sneak out from your day job – try listening to “Surf Style” and see if you can dance without anyone watching you!

We catch up with NBF over the origins of “Chillanthropy,” their top secret collaboration with The Driver Era, and why they’re inspired by Britney Spears. Check it out below!

For the past 3 years, since you released Sponge Fingerz, you evolved your sound from a traditional 4-piece to a 3-piece guitar-driven band. In fact, there’s more guitars than drums in “Chillanthropy.” What motivated you to shift your sound?

Jeff: I don’t think our sound has necessarily shifted in the way explained above, but it just matured naturally with gaining new inspirations and perspectives on life and music.

Shelby: After a long period of touring and traveling an album cycle, we stopped for a few months. Departed from Red Bull Records and got back to what it was in the beginning. We just started capturing vibes, making songs, completing songs, and making sure we thought it sounded dope.

Lyrically, the vibe is more chill, romantic, and packed with emotion, yet it feels (very) danceable. Where did you write them and how did it influence the mood?

Jeff: I think lyrically things have been looking more inward as of late, whereas a lot of our early music was looking outward and commenting. We’ve also finally had a good break from touring giving us the chance to have relationships and friends again.

This has given me new inspiration and I’ve returned my attention to the fact that music is therapy for me. Not shying away from darker feelings and emotions.

Paulie, I remember that you told me that all of you wrote one of the songs (“When She’s Sober”) after overhearing a guy rant about his girlfriend when she’s sober. Can you tell us more about why you felt inspired by that particular conversation?

Paul: Yes! We were nearing the end of our last US tour in Portland, Oregon, it was late and we stopped in town to chill. As we were getting out of our Sprinter, we overheard a guy say, “She never cries when she’s sober.”

We all immediately looked at each other and knew it had to be a song. When we got back to the hotel that night, we started writing it and finished it a couple weeks later after a photo shoot LA. Thanks, random Oregon dude!

Shelby: Literally the only words of his phone conversation that were audible to us was, “She never cries when she’s sober.” We instantly knew it was a chorus hook. The world is weird.

You’ve collabed with The Driver Era twice – you had Rocky sing a vocal sample on “What Are We Now?,” and on “Cool Girl,” you had Ross do a full feature. How did the collabs happen? What was it like to work together (as friends, producers, and collaborators)?

Jeff: I think when you find people that bring the best out of each one another then you gotta ride that energy. We have this great balance of two different worlds that when they’re brought together, make what I think is “magic.”

And if there’s magic, we’re gonna keep making great tunes together. Once we’ve finished a song, we’re always like, “Ok dope, let’s make a better one!” Then, it kinda builds on itself like that.

Paul: We’re all just really close friends and respect each other as musicians and producers, so collaborating just happened naturally. “Cool Girl,” started after some bulletproof coffee, a lil’ devils lettuce, and perhaps a drib of tequila!

Just havin’ fun, jammin’, and later, we wound up writing the song in a night and the three of us wrote the outro afterwards. For “What Are We Now?,” we cruised over to Rocky’s studio and wanted to write and release a song all in one day. While we were recording it, we realized 4/20 was the next day. So it all just made sense – the track turned out fire too!

Shelby: Those inspiring dudes probably inspire us just as much as we inspire them! It’s a beautiful friendship. Lucky to be able to work with cool peeps.

Which celebrity crush, dead or alive, is your ideal cool girl?

Jeff: Winona Ryder is bae for life.

Paul: Zoe Kravitz, she’s dope.

Shelby: Jennifer Lawrence!

If you are to shop for a date outfit with your fantasy cool girl, what are the top 3 things you’d buy from your favorite vintage shop?

Paul: First, I’m lookin’ to cop a really rad jacket. Next, a simple but, nicely worn tee shirt, and lastly, a pair of sunnies for the meet up. Throw that with some black creepers, a pair of Dickies, and a spritz of smells goods – we in love.

Shelby: I’d get some classic jeans – a proper foundation obviously. Then, I’d find a quality long sleeve, utilitarian, yet comfy (for cuddles), but kinda neutral as to let the accessories shine. I’d pretty much spend all the money on some 80’s or 90’s vintage Fendi or Cartier frames that I can pull down from time to time to throw some deep looks.

Jeff: For me, I like go classic and vintage. I prefer clothes that feel worn and have life to ‘em beyond off the rack. Soulful, if you will. I’d go a vintage cardigan with some color on a retro box cut button down or vintage tee. Put some old Levi’s jeans with it with Vans or Dr. Martens and I’m set. Put on my rings and trinkets with a blanket in the back seat if the date takes a turn to the beach.

Apart from music, fashion plays a big part of the NBF DNA. When were all of you first introduced to fashion and who are your style icons?

Jeff: My first introduction to fashion was through grunge/punk music and ‘90s skateboarding. Both were sort of based on how you could twist things that everybody can buy to make them wrong or individual. Whether it was a simple T-shirt graphic that made a statement or cutting off the bottoms of your jeans, the details were important.

Style wasn’t based around money but, more on how you altered/paired what was easily available to be seen in a new light. I also love how Tyler, the Creator creates style and sort of invents his own looks on personal preference rather than just trends.

Paul: Fashion for me has always been inspired by artists and musicians that I admire and maybe some anime. When I was a kid my pops used to get free Fubu gear, lol – I was fly. Style icons for me are Tyler, the Creator, Jared Leto, Kanye – the list goes on. But I more so admire the way they express their individuality through fashion and I try to do the same with the rags I throw on my body.

Shelby: My favorite fashion icons are the ones that don’t give a fuck.  They are just in their own world of rules. Whether it’s a small child that is wearing a mix of hand me downs to make any square feel insecure or the biggest celebs (Gaga, Kanye) taking all their influences stirring them up in order to make a statement. It’s just so cool to see personal identity in plain site (Michy, your fashion off the chain).

Thanks! Before I forget, I notice that you’ve dropped some Easter eggs that allude to Britney Spears and Aaliyah. Why are you inspired by them?

Paul: They all just had big songs that we grew up listening to. Not sure we realized just how influenced we were by them until now, but those melodies are amazing! It’s fun for us to pay homage to those tunes.

Jeff: I love when melodies/lyrics subconsciously come out of you in the writing process. Instead of running from those things, we embrace them the way that hip-hop would sample from other artist. It’s a way to pay homage to the music that has influenced us and twisting it.

Compared to you guys, the majority of most male-fronted bands (then and now) aren’t inspired by women’s music. As men, how do you feel about this?

Jeff: I have no bias of sex in music. Feeling is a feeling. And that’s what music is – cutting through the bullshit. Have you ever heard Billie Holiday sing? That’ll give your soul goosebumps.

Paul: We’re sensitive. Being around women is just where we feel most comfortable and the majority of our friends are girls. We’re definitely not the macho men arm wrestling with boys type – we’re just the guys playing guitar and flirting.

Shelby: I think we are in the middle of the shift from a patriarchal society to a matriarchal society, so it’s only natural to acknowledge all influences and honor what we feel. In modern times, everybody has a voice and women are a force to be reckoned with. I think all of us appreciate the subtleties and specialness of a woman’s perspective.

Lastly, what other aspects of the music industry do you hope to change?

Jeff: I think the music industry is settling into its new skin. For us, it’s about having a lane to create and share our makings with people without being held up by the so-called music industry “gatekeepers.” Technology has definitely allowed us to work this way, so I think it is already changed to a point where independent artist can be creative to be heard and stay authentic.

Paul: To be honest, we just want to keep making great music and releasing it consistently. Everyone gets so lost in the rule book of music business that they forget what really matters is the people listening to it. It’s always for our listeners and ourselves.

Shelby: In my opinion, the music industry was a recent casualty of technology. When complete devastation occurs, it breeds new life and evolution. The industry is more transparent, merit based and getting away from backroom power moves. Everything is accounted for now. The true talents and hard workers are winning as they weren’t able to in the past. I hope making an honest living becomes more obtainable for the ones who deserve it.

Chillantrophy Part 1 will be released on June 1, 2018.

MILK Makeup’s debut mascara contains CBD, and it basically gives you the look of falsies

beauty_bae_cara_delevingne_mascara

The hype around MILK Makeup’s very first mascara release has been huge – because, duh.

MILK is a cult-favorite beauty brand for a reason (the reason being that all of their products are amazing), so when they announced they would be releasing a CBD-enriched mascara to add to their collection, I knew I had to get my hands on the product.

Let me preface this by saying I truly am a huge MILK Makeup fan. When I was younger, I used to clot my face with thick, over-priced makeup that made me look like a banshee (I had terrible acne and was overcompensating). When I realized the damage all of this junk was doing to my skin, I kind of stopped using makeup overall – unless I went out.

A post shared by Milk Makeup (@milkmakeup) on

Heavy makeup is a nightmare for your skin and also a nightmare to take off at night. When beauty brands like MILK Makeup started coming about, I felt like there was hope for the future of makeup. MILK has for sure given me a new love for makeup, because of how light all of their products are.

I never feel like I’m clogging my pores with MILK’s products – in fact, it usually hardly feels like I’m wearing any makeup at all. And after all, I want to enhance my features, not cover them up! MILK helped me really love my skin and treat it well, and now I want to show off my face rather than hide it.

So again, of course, when they released their mascara, I knew I wanted to test it out. Especially since I am all about CBD being used in skincare – I was way too excited about this product.

I’ve honestly never found mascara that I like. It’s sad, I know. Most gals have a “choice mascara,” but not this gal! I’ve never stuck with one brand, and I have always been determined to find a wand to stan.

A post shared by Milk Makeup (@milkmakeup) on

At first glance, MILK’s Kush Mascara is super sleek and cute, but super big. That’s a heafty tube, people. The tree-shaped brush is thick, and the bristles are very close together – this is something I look for in a wand, mainly because I like to separate my lashes and get that big volume effect.

I fell in love with the Kush Mascara the first time I tried it. Yes, I’m a sucker for MILK, but I am a tough mascara critic. The CBD oil is meant to be conditioning and is included “for thickness without the fallout,” according to MILK. This is the first thing I noticed. The CBD oil made this formula super thin, but gave me the thickest lashes I’ve ever achieved with just mascara. My lashes also felt hydrated and I wore this stuff all night with no crustiness or fallout.

This mascara is also meant to curl and lengthen, which I definitely noticed. My lashes seriously resembled falsies. Imagine saving your falsies money to spend other things? This mascara is only $24, so it’s much cheaper than a few pairs of falsies that won’t last.

The most important thing about this mascara is that it didn’t clump when I added more layers. I like to do about 3-4 layers when using mascara, and the Kush Mascara went on super smooth.

A post shared by Milk Makeup (@milkmakeup) on

Now, if you have an issue with CBD, you’re basically missing out. “Ever since the inception of Milk Makeup, we wanted to create a product that provides the amazing properties of cannabis. When we started talking about coming out with vegan mascara, we knew we couldn’t use beeswax, a common binding component in mascara formulas. That’s where cannabis oil comes in…Kush Mascara is the vegan way to get major volume and healthier-looking lashes in one hit,” says MILK on their reasoning behind a CBD-infused mascara.

The other plusses? This product is vegan, talc-free, and cruelty-free. And yes, it’s available at Sephora, too!

And no, this mascara won’t get you high – but, it will give you insane volume.
