CoCoa Swatches was created to help women with darker skin tones find beauty products

This is something almost all my girls with darker skin tones can relate to – the struggle of finding your shade in various beauty brands.

It wasn’t until brands like NARS and Fenty came through with the 20+ shades for other brands to realize that 1. there more shades than just light, medium and dark and 2. there’s hella money to be made by catering to women of color.

That’s when Ofunne Amaka decided to create CoCoa Swatches, which not only helps women find the shades they need, but also includes swatches to show how the products will look on medium to dark skin tones.

Join Galore Beauty for exclusive convos, content and more.

What’s your background, and how would you describe what you do? Tell us your story.

I am the founder of Cocoa Swatches – a platform that aims to empower beauty lovers with underrepresented complexions through makeup swatches, beauty inspo, and much more. As the founder of this platform I wear many hats including photographer, swatching expert, makeup artist, content curator, writer, digital strategist, storyteller, video editor, head of business development, agent, and much, much more.

What were you doing before?

About 5 years ago, I was working in Corporate Communications in the tech space. I decided to follow my passion and moved to NYC to complete a Masters program in Strategic Communication at Columbia University and try to break into the fashion/beauty space. While interning and attending school, the idea for Cocoa Swatches was born.

I was a broke graduate student in NYC who wanted to make informed beauty purchases, but I had a hard time finding resources to help me do so. I created the Cocoa Swatches Instagram page to help people like me who wanted quick content they could reference when buying makeup for darker skin tones.

How did you get to where you are now?

After I graduated from Columbia, I began job searching again but had a hard time finding a role. During this time, I began working on the first iteration of the Cocoa Swatches mobile app. Still jobless, and very unsure about what would happen next, I launched the Cocoa Swatches app on February 29, 2016.

Things really took off from there. The app essentially went viral and was so well received. I eventually decided to make Cocoa Swatches my full time job and have been at it ever since.

How does Cocoa Swatches work?

I look at Cocoa Swatches as an “omni-channel” platform. There is the mobile app, which gives users more in-depth reviews on makeup products. But, in addition to quick overviews of new collections.

I also write for the magazine portion of the app, “SKINDEEP.” I try to create thought provoking content on some of the issues and trends I see in the beauty industry, as well as creating inspirational makeup content like #CocoaColorStories.

Is it just you, or do you have a team and what is everyone’s role?

Cocoa Swatches is a one woman show. I do everything from the photography to the digital strategy. Then there is the social media portion of Cocoa Swatches. As a beauty influencer on Instagram, I get to work with some of the top beauty brands in the world and share their latest launches with my followers. I use Twitter as a place to chat and connect with people one and one. I use YouTube as a way to demo products or review products that need more than just a photo, like foundations.

What changes are you pushing for within the beauty industry and how are you helping these changes become a reality?

I really want people to realize that diversity in the beauty industry should be holistic. In other words, it needs to happen in every department at every beauty company. It’s great to have people of color in ad campaigns but if everyone at a decision making level is one color, there is still a huge disconnect. There needs to be opportunities for those who have been marginalized to speak their truth (and not get fired or ostracized for it).

Another part of my job is doing speaking engagement with CEO’s, marketing directors, VP’s in the beauty industry to highlight these issues and start these conversations. I try to make sure that I use my platform to enlighten people about issues and struggles they may have never even known about or thought of.

What are some brown-girl friendly makeup brands, high end and drug store?

High End: Fenty Beauty (of course), Cover FX, Lancome, NARS, Beauty Bakerie, Bobbi Brown, Danessa Myricks, and Dose of Colors. As for drug store brands my go to’s include: Maybelline, Black Radiance, and Iman Cosmetics.

What void do you feel you’re fulfilling in the beauty industry?

Many of the women in my life who wear makeup buy items through others’ recommendations, not through their own discovery (like playing around in Sephora). Cocoa Swatches is a merge of the two – it’s a trusted resource that recommends makeup products specifically for the audience it seeks to serve (makeup lovers with underrepresented complexions).

There aren’t many resources out there speaking to this audience specifically about makeup products. As the curator, I also like to use the platform to create a safe space to start conversations about issues that my audience might experience but don’t feel comfortable speaking up about, like colorism, or accessibility of makeup products (for ex: why don’t makeup retailers carry the deeper foundation shades?).

What changes are you hoping to see within the beauty industry in the near future?

I am really hoping that the idea of “diversity” doesn’t fade into oblivion after the trendiness of it all dies down. It’s a common misconception that many big brands are just now stepping their toe into the diversity/inclusivity pool.

However, many brands in the beauty space have created initiatives for makeup lovers of color (in many instances, black women specifically), in the past that have failed and were ultimately abandoned. With that being said, I hope all of the conversations around diversity and inclusion we are having actually transition into action.

Billie Eilish is pop music’s 16-year-old, “idgaf,” lyrically profound sensation

Billie Eilish, aka @wherearetheavocados and Galore’s newest Cover Girl, has been singing since she was four years old. She is now pop music’s sweetheart.

Her and her brother, Finneas, write her music together. Finneas also helps her with producing, and they basically work together and bounce ideas off of each other as a dynamic brother/sister duo.

After Billie posted her single, “Ocean Eyes,” on SoundCloud, her career blew up. How can a 14-year-old 1. sound so ethereal and 2. sing about profound feelings that most adults have a hard time putting into words?

The world became fascinated by Billie and her angel-like, airy voice and her intensely mature lyrics – that, even still, contain a certain whimsy about them, with lines such as, “You really know how to make me cry.”

Billie has now garnered tons of fans because of her fantastic voice, her unique fashion sense, and her ability to seem so down to earth during a whirlwind of fame. Even celebs are obsessing over Billie and how she always seems to stay true to who she is. She recently took a selfie with Lana Del Rey that blew up the Internet, because who wouldn’t be this stoked to meet Lana?

Those who are authentic and genuine are hard to come by, and I believe that’s the main attraction to Billie. She is also talented as hell, driven, and keep in mind, this girl is just 16.

Billie recently released her song, “Lovely,” with Khalid on as the featured artist. She’s also worked with Vince Staples and Sofi Tukker. These are big names in the business to be working with at such a young age, but none of it seems to phase Billie. She just wants to work with other artists that care about producing good art as much as she does.

Chloe Grace Moretz sits down with Billie Eilish to discuss her love of all things thrifted, what it’s like working with a sibling, the toxicity of social media, and the inspiration of growing up in LA. Check out the exclusive interview with Chloe Grace Moretz and photos below!

Who are your favorite current brands? Favorite vintage brands?

I mostly thrift. But, I don’t really thrift at most vintage stores, because most of it is overpriced and it is stuff that you could find for $3 or $5 elsewhere. So, I normally just go into thrift stores and spend around fifty bucks to buy like three huge bags of clothes, which is tight. It is between that and designer brands like Gucci, Luis Vuitton, Prada, Fendi, Belanciaga, Joyrich, New Future London, and new upcoming brands.

What do you think sets you apart from other musicians?

I think I would leave that up for other people to decide. Whatever you see in me is exactly what I want you to see in me. I think everyone is entitled to have their own opinion and I don’t want to tell people how to feel about me.

I know from when we’ve met and talked that you have a very tight knit family!  Whats it like working so closely with your brother?

It sort of depends. He is my best friend, so sometimes it is really, really easy because of that, but other times it is hard because of that. Because we’ve known each other our whole lives and because we’re best friends.

We’re real with each other and know everything about each other. There’s no space, there’s no emptiness. We kind of know everything and are a huge part of each other’s lives so our creating goes hand in hand with that.

How do you guys compliment each other?

Finneas is a really incredible writer and producer – and everything, really. But, as a writer in general, he is just so easily amazing. It just flows out of him naturally. It is his forte and for me it isn’t. Singing is my forte and knowing exactly what I want and how I want things to sound like and the vision.

So, they kind of go hand in hand. I write a lot of melodies so sometimes he’ll write the lyrics and I’ll write the melodies. And when he produces my stuff, I sit with him and we talk about what sounds good and “let’s change this and let’s do this. Let’s make this longer.” I mean it is always different, but these things keep us synced.

Do you write all your music together as well?

Most of it. Sometimes he writes a whole song and he’ll bring it to me and say, “Here’s a song I wrote,” and I will love it. Or, I will write a song that is just me and then I will bring it to him and we will add to it or not. It is always different, which keeps it interesting and keeps us from writing the same song every time.

How would you describe your sound?

I wouldn’t, really. Again, I like to leave that up to other people to figure out and to want to know. I mean, from my point of view I don’t really have “a sound” or a genre because I think with music, if it is good, it’s good. It doesn’t matter what kind of song it is or what kind of artist it is – it is art and if you like it you like it.

Who, if you had to choose, inspired you to start making music?

It is a lot of people and it is also no one, because I just wanted to do it from the beginning. Maybe Aurora, Lana Del Rey, and Tyler the Creator. Actually, Tyler and Childish Gambino were the people who made me want to be an “artist,” and “make art” – not just do music or just make clothing or whatever. They are really good examples of artists who are doing everything they can.

What is your background in music like?

I always sang, ever since I was little. I joined the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus when I was eight and that is how I learned to read music and how to take care of my voice. We sang in a lot of different languages, so that was cool.

My mom is a songwriter and she taught me how to write songs.  I didn’t officially take any piano or guitar lessons. My dad taught me some chords on the piano and then I just taught myself. And YouTube is kind of my best friend for that. You can learn anything on YouTube.

What do you want people to take away from your songs?

I would say, I talk about wanting to get more out there in the world and that doesn’t mean fame at all because, fuck that, I never want more of that. But, what I mean is that I want to get more known by people so that they can “feel” me.

Have a piece of art that they can keep as theirs and relate to and even “own” – almost more than I do. And if I am saying something that someone else feels and they didn’t even know that they felt that way, that’s what I want.

How do you see your sound shifting with you as you grow up? How have you seen it change since your first single?

Yes, I see it changing for sure and it already has. I am going to make music in different genres my whole life. If I want to make a song that is a completely different genre than people think I make, that won’t stop me.

How did you enjoy collaborating with Vince Staples on your remix? Are you interested in collaborating more with different artists?

It was tight. It was really crazy because I have been a fan of his for years and seen three of his shows and he is amazing. He is on the song because I was asked if I could get any artist to be on that song, who would I want and I said him and somehow he said yes.

I said him not even thinking it could possibly happen and it did. I have a lot of wishes for collaborating with other artists and I have, and hopefully those will come out soon.

What’s your dream collaboration?

I love collaborating with other artists. That is the kind of collaborating I like. More than writing with other writers or producers, I really love working with artists I love and respect and look up to as people.

I have been saying Tyler the Creator for a long time because he is so creative. I think Smino is a genius and I would love to see that first hand. I just think he is so smart and the way he works is really interesting to me.

You’ve been touring nonstop, how has it been connecting with fans all around the world?

Bro, it is crazy. It is so surreal. I can go to like, Milan, Italy, where I have never been in my life and see fans waiting in the freezing cold outside down the block. It’s insane to me. The idea that I have reached people that far away is just something I don’t understand. The internet is crazy. I don’t even understand.

What’s one thing you try to do in every city you travel to?

Not lose my mind and find something to eat – which isn’t always easy.

What are your essentials for tour if you had to choose 5?

Lotion, deodorant, hair products (my hair is high maintenance), toothbrush, and perfume. My mom’s list for essentials for me are humidifier, steamer, zicam, essential oils, and face masks for the plane.

If you were to cover a song acoustically what song would it be and why?

I have done it before many times, and have been asked to do it more lately. I guess there are a lot of songs I want to cover eventually, although I mostly enjoy writing and performing original songs and don’t think of myself as a cover artist.

What are your fashion essentials right now?

Chains, rings, hats, hoodies, and currently a fannypack.

Growing up in Los Angeles, have you found inspiration for your music or style from the musicians and artists who have come out of the LA/West Coast?

Yes, definitely. LA is kind of like art everywhere. It is kind of competitive so everybody is trying to be better which is both good and bad. I sort of get inspired by anything. You can see the bottom of someone’s shoe and be inspired to turn that into something else. So, I have found inspiration from people everywhere. LA or somewhere else.

In this social media driven world, how do you choose to use it? Is it to connect to fans, to find inspiration, or to express yourself?

Social media is kind of hard right now, so I don’t know. I try to sort of connect with as many people that support me and love me as I can, because they are the reason I am who I am and exist as an artist. Now, though, I try to stay off of social media. I go on my phone and look at stuff but I think, especially at this point, it kind of makes me go crazy so, fuck it.

Cydney Christine gives us her top 10 beauty tips for Spring

Hey, gorgeous!

My name is Cydney Christine, and I’m here writing for Galore to give you my best beauty tips for this Spring.

Spring makeup and beauty have to be my favorite! The look I always go for during Spring would be a natural glam with a little pop of color.

These makeup tips will change your makeup routine from an hour to ten minutes!  Aka, game changing. For most of these steps, I recommend using your fingers. It will be much easier this way!

READ ALSO: MILK Makeup’s debut mascara contains CBD, and it basically gives you the look of falsies

1.

Remember to wash your face before adding any makeup. Also, using a moisturizer and a primer are both ways to reduce your chances of breakouts and help prevent clogged pores.

2.

Use minimal foundation and concealer to prepare for summer time – let your skin breath! I normally add concealer in necessary areas with my fingers (usually under my eyes, around my nose, and forehead). I go over this using minimal setting powder.

3.

Setting spray is still a necessity for your routine, even though it’s more natural. It helps keep the products held together and evenly distributed on your face.

4.

Instead of harsh concealing, I recommend a glittery bronzer instead. It still gives the same effect but a little more natural/glowing look – aka exactly what you want to achieve during Spring.

READ ALSO: The new Urban Decay Beached collection is more versatile than you’d think

5.

I think natural looking lash strips or no lashes with added mascara is a great look. It will show off your beautiful eyes and you’ll look more original!

6.

I like a thin, winged liner (more often than not lol) to make my eyes look more defined, especially at night.

7.

Adding a light shade of eyeshadow to give you a pop of color is definitely the signature to the ultimate Spring look. Some of my favorite colors to choose from are gold, peach, or pink.

8.

I always make sure my eyebrows are done so I never have to do too much to fix them. I lightly fill my eyebrows with powder products instead of cream so they can look natural and I don’t use concealer. Feel free to use a little concealer if you need to fix them.

9.

My favorite part of my routine is a highlight! I use a liquid highlighter, because it looks better for a natural look. Sometimes, if I want extra glow, I use a powder-like highlighter and lightly go over the liquid applied with my fingers.

10.

Last but not least, lipgloss! Before adding lipgloss, sometimes I add a natural color lip liner to make my lips a little more noticeable. But just a light lipgloss that smells good is perfect to complete this natural, Spring beauty vibe.

Here’s how you can treat your annoying clogged pores and blackheads

$

As much as we love a good face beat, a smooth makeup application wouldn’t be possible without healthy skin.

From pimples, blackheads, and acne scars, tons of ways our skin decides to hate us. It’s important to not only understand your skin, but treat your problem areas accordingly.

Are you someone who suffers from those small, pesky bumps on your nose that have, let’s face it, probably been there for a majority of your life? You’re not alone. Most people say that they have blackheads on their face – at least at some point in their lives.

You, and everyone else, probably thought that these were blackheads. But, according to experts, these little spots might actually be something else.

Join Galore Beauty for exclusive convos, content and more.

In a recent Allure article, board-certified dermatologists, Shari Marchbein and Michelle Henry, debunk the common myths about blackheads. Plus, the two share some great tips on how to get rid of these annoying bumps on your face (and probably, mainly your nose) for good.

For starters, there is a major difference between blackheads and a less commonly known form of clogged pores called, “sebaceous filaments.”

“Blackheads form when the opening of a hair follicle becomes clogged or plugged with dead skin cells and oil,” Dr. Michelle Henry says. “This material gets oxidized by the air and appears black, hence the name blackhead.”

READ ALSO: Jhene’ Aiko admits her skincare routine is brutal

Blackheads are a form of acne and appear when a hair follicle is filled up with oil and bacteria. So, many people confuse blackheads with sebaceous filaments/clogged pores because they look super similar. But, have to be treated differently – meaning, you could have been treating your skin incorrectly all of these years.

“Unlike a blackhead, sebaceous filaments are caused when the oil lining the follicle in a pore causes it to look larger. Many people are sensitive to their pore size and feel these are comedones, but that is not correct,” Marchbein says.

💧

A post shared by Iggy Azalea (@thenewclassic) on

READ ALSO: Iggy Azalea tells us all about her fave beauty products on Insta

So, how do we know which is which and how to treat them? A rule of thumb is to try pore stripes to remove the acne and if nothing changes, then it’s not blackheads.

“It is important to use products that are exfoliative or keratolytic,” aka peeling agents, “to dissolve the plug causing the blackhead,” according to Henry. An example of this product is this AcneFree Maximum Strength Terminator 10 ($7).

It can be more complicated treating sebaceous filaments, because your pore size is due to genetics and they can’t shrink. You can keep oil buildup under control using prescription retinoids or over-the-counter salicylic acid and glycolic acid, “Whether as a scrub, pad, or gel,” says Marchbein.

Sadly this isn’t a permanent fix, because your pores will fill back up – that’s just the way life goes. But, using scrubs like St. Ives Blackhead Clearing Face Scrub ($4) or Garnier’s SkinActive Clean + Blachead Eliminator ($8) will clean your pores with daily use.

Wise Roots Living is a new, holistic skincare line inspired by Caribbean women

I have yet to meet a woman who has not had to deal with the struggles of finding the right skincare products for their skin.

Whether you have dry skin, oily skin, or stubborn acne, we all, at one time or another, have tried everything and anything. Even all of those fancy brands that promise you the healthy, glowing, blemish free skin you’ve dreamed of – more times than not, we’ve been left unsatisfied with the results.

I’ve personally done the whole Proactive, Clinique, and Neutrogena thing to try and deal with annoying bumps on my forehead. None of them worked. So, ever since a friend of mine told me to try tea tree oil and actually seeing results, I’ve been super into the organic route. I have been looking for more natural, homemade remedies.

Not too long ago, I came across a line called Wise Roots Living, thanks to a model friend of mine who started using their products. I can honestly say that her skin radiates and needs not one drop of makeup!

Wise Roots Living is a pure, holistic skincare line of products inspired by the Caribbean woman. Being an island gal from Puerto Rico, that was enough to intrigue me.

But, the actual best part? The founder, Puerto Rican/Dominican model, Zaliris Made, and her business partner, Rebeca Lopez, and the entire brand’s team is constructed of women (other than their Graphic Designer/Web Developer, Sebastian).

With product names such as, “Bruja Blessings,” “Llluvia Drops,” and “Caribeña Glow,” I was so curious about this Wise Roots Living. The brand was born in Zaliris’ kitchen a few years ago, and I just had to learn about it. I reached out to the founder to find out more!

Check out the interview below, and be sure to check out Wise Roots Living. Don’t be afraid to give the line a try if you’re looking for that island glow all year round!

What inspired the name Wise Roots Living?

Every time I visit my island of Puerto Rico, I go to the Rainforest, El Yunque. I always noticed these colorful roots coming out of these particular palm trees called Sierra.

So, 4 years ago, I decided to open an Instagram account with the intention to educate people about how to avoid the intake of toxins. The first thing that came to my mind were these are “happy roots.”

Roots are everything – our ancestors, our morals, our strengths, our past, what grounds us, and what connects us with Mother Nature. Roots are what keep plants and trees alive, to what we are inevitably attached and dependent on.

Wise, on the other hand, is what we carry from generation to generation – what we know but cannot always explain. Wisdom is the balance between intellectual and spiritual consciousness; what we should all seek.

And living is the hope and eagerness of keeping our wise roots alive, and to remember that they live amongst us and that they should be present in our lifestyle.

Does Wise Roots Living cater to all skin types?

We consider Wise Roots Living a holistic skincare brand, because the beauty of natural healing doesn’t just target one specific problem. It balances you as a whole so you can treat the root of the problem.

Our products are extremely healing and balancing, which is what makes them perfect for any skin type. If you have oily skin, there is no need to use harsh ingredients that will dehydrate your skin and what will cause your skin to create extra sebum.

The opposite, actually. You need to work with oils that help you balance your natural production of sebum (oil). Our first collection, Bare Basics, is all about this-about balancing and helping our customers to fall in love with more “simple” but effective natural approaches.

Which product would you recommend for acne prone skin?

Believe it or not, I would recommend our face serum, Bruja Blessings, for many reasons. One, it will help you balance you skin oils as I mentioned before. Two, it will help you heal cysts. Three, it will help you regenerate skin cells for acne scars and wrinkles. Four, it will nourish your skin and leave it extremely soft.

You can start falling back in love with your skin and send positive energy towards it.

I know the line was born in your kitchen – do you continue to make the products there?

I continue to make the products myself, but no longer in my kitchen. The process is almost the same, because I believe in the intentions that I put into the products. Here and there I let my intuition alter the recipes a little bit.

This is my meditation, and a talent I believe that was given to me. Both of my grandmothers used to heal pain with prayers and energy, which is what we know nowadays as Reiki, so I like to think I inherited this.

What is the actual process of making the products?

I try to make products always at the beginning of the week, and sometimes my business partner helps me. We have known each other for 15 years, and she joined Wise Roots Living almost a year ago.

I always begin by burning palo santo or sage and playing some music.

The first product I like to make is Diosa Rituals Face Wash since it’s the first skincare product I came up with. My husband’s feedback motivated me to share it with others and to get more into skin care products instead of household – which is what I was doing for my family before going into the beauty industry.

READ ALSO: CoCoa Swatches was created to help women with darker skin tones find beauty products

The names of your products are so creative. Did the names come to you before or after making the actual product?

Yes! I am Puerto Rican/Dominican,and so is my business partner, so I wanted to emphasize that we have Caribbean/Latin roots.

The names came after the product list was done, since they really describe how I feel about the products. Also, the majority of them have a word in Spanish.

For instance, we have a belly/body butter that was made with the intention to prevent/avoid stretch marks during pregnancy (I am a fan of pregnancy and one day would love to be a midwife). So, because you are growing a miracle, I named this butter Miracle Dust. Babies are born with hundreds of chemicals, passed by their mothers through the umbilical cord, so this butter is a miracle dust for the mother and the baby.

How long did it take you to perfect your recipes? How did you test them?

It took me like 2 years to make all my recipes perfect, because this was my hobby and not my business. I used to sell to my friends and friends of friends. So, that is actually how I tested my products, too.

One of my best friends had acne prone and dull skin, after she started using my products her skin completely changed. She went from having millions of products and being so picky about what to use, to just using what I was making back then.

Wise Roots Living products were tested for 3 years on different skin types and skin problems before we launched our website. We are very grateful and proud to say we have received only one bad feedback about one product, but the person is still our customer and loves the rest of the line.

What is your skincare routine like?

That is a great question, because I was never a “let me take care of my skin” person. When I was a teenager, I tried several times to follow a skin care routine. But, my skin would actually get worse after using all those mainstream brands.

I never developed the habit to have a skin care routine. I did modeling my whole entire life so I was exposed to dirty brushes and lots of makeup, but for some reason I always preferred to do my own face masks and scrubs.

Nowadays, I still struggle with using all the products, everyday, day and night. But what I cannot live without is my Diosa Rituals face wash, Mist of Gaia face toner, Canela Prayers clay mask, and Bruja Blessings face serum.

When I am lazy, and because I do not use makeup on my skin, I can clean my face with the toner and then apply my serum. I do the clay mask once a week, but if I have any event or photoshoot, I definitely do not leave my house without doing the clay mask since it’s like an instant Snapchat filter to your skin, followed by the face serum.

Which 3 products would you recommend for first time users?

Me and my business partner always think about this question and every time I answer differently because I honestly want people to try all of them. They are all great.

But, I would say: Diosa Rituals face wash, Canela Prayers clay mask and Bruja Blessings serum. With those three and a mascara, you can live your whole entire life and look pretty all day long.

Post-break up depression can be hard to kick, but you are not alone and this is not the end of the world

In honor of Mental Health Month (May), we sat down with Dr. Ayodola Adigun, an Adult Psychiatrist Resident at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, to talk about how to deal with the ever-difficult depression that can come after a break up.

Dr. Ayodola Adigun will also be starting a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Yale University this June. She talks to us about the signs of a depressive episode and how to handle it, conquer it, and eventually move on.

Read her article below, and don’t forget that this is not the end of the world, and you are not alone!

Has it been 2 weeks since your 3 year relationship went down in the dumps, and you still don’t know how to get your life?

Is your mood lower than the approval rates for your not so favorite political leader?

No longer hanging out with friends?

None of your favorite foods taste the same?

Feeling guilty for your relationship turmoil?

Have no energy to do a damn thing?

Sleeping seems like a lost cause?

Does your mind feel like a foggy day?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you’re most likely experiencing a depressive episode.

A depressive episode is qualified by a depressed mood or a loss in interest, accompanied with 5 or more symptoms of: poor sleep, low energy, poor concentration, the feeling that you’re moving slower or faster than normal, feelings of guilt, changes in appetite, and/or suicidal thoughts.

This isn’t you!

Now that you have realized you are depressed, here are some tips to get out of your funk, and reclaim your life again!

1. Exercise

Some good cardio can increase your serotonin, dopamine, epinephrine, and endorphin levels. Not only will you feel good during and after your workout, but let’s be real – everyone loves a revenge body.

2. Watch funny movies

Welcome in laughing again and spend time around positive people/places that elicit more smiling. Plus, no one likes frowning wrinkles.

3. Masturbate

Save the cobwebs for Halloween and get to know your happy place again. Release some of that pent up stress and frustration in a healthy, self-satisfying way.

4. Mirror cry

Yep, it sounds exactly like what it is. Look at the mirror while you are having one of your crying episodes. Not so attractive, right? You’ll soon not want to see yourself in that emotional state again. But cry, yes. Cry it out. Crying is good.

5. Pick up the phone

You may feel embarrassed with your feelings, but remember that you are not alone. Talk to family and friends and welcome any and all support that carries you to a better place.

6. Explore a new skill

You may feel hopeless, helpless, or even worthless, but learning how to play the ukulele is damn cool. Find optimism in welcoming a new learning set that can make you feel like the unique person you may have forgotten you were.

7. Praise yourself

YOU ROCK! You are awesome with or without an intimate relationship. Remind yourself daily with post-its around the house how truly fantastic you are.

8. Dress it up

Look good. Feel good. If you feel like shit, don’t let your apparel show it. Incorporate bright colors, new cuts, and new selfies for Instagram to awe and inspire yourself and your followers.

9. Travel

Whether it is just a walk through the park or a last minute trip to Cuba, get out, go out, and explore new or old environments for a new and better you.

10. Seek Help

Still feeling like life isn’t worth living anymore and nothing seems to make you feel better? Make an appointment with a mental health practitioner to get the best help possible. Your life matters, and seeking help does not equate to defeat.

If you’re a stan for all things hair, Jada Giovonni is the girl you need to get hip to. Jada is known for not only slaying with her wigs, but for literally make hair extensions look as if they’re real.

Once Jada quit her salary job to pursue luxury wig making, she never looked back. Since then, Jada and her business keep getting bigger. We sat down with wig expert, Jada, to discuss hair trends, clients, and how she got her start. Check out the interview below!

Join Galore Beauty for exclusive convos, content and more.

What’s your background and how would you describe what you do? Tell us your story.

My story is incomplete as of now, but I’ve alway done hair. My clients and I sometimes joke about me starting hair when I was so young – about 5 or 6 years ago. People ask me how I started, and I always say that it chose me! But, I’m really just a young women doing countless hours of what I love, sharing it with the world, and giving my clients the beautiful hair they desire.

If you would have told me when I was a 14 years old, doing hair in my mother’s basement, that I would one day be a very popular wig and lacefront artist, I probably wouldn’t have believed you.

What were you doing before, and how did you get to where you are now?

I had a corporate job at Quicken Loans. I had a salary and everything, and I actually resigned and left in good standing. I learned very early keep all professional relationships in a good place. I guess one day, I just stepped out on faith, and before I knew it, I was booking crazy clients out of no where.

I did hair in my dorm at college, which is where I also started selling hair. From that, I started working 60 hours a week at Quicken Loans. Once I left, I worked at 2 salons for about 2 years, and then I opened up my own storefront. That’s when I launched my website and when Giovonni Hair Company by Jada Giovonni was born.

You went viral for creating a wig that was braided and extremely seamless. How long did it take you to perfect your craft of realistic wig making?

To be honest, it’s taken me all this time. Each time I make a new wig, I create a new style or challenge myself to do something above average. I learn new ways to make that particular style be remarkable in its own light.

I used to be my biggest critic, but these days, I find it thrilling to impress myself with my work. It’s how I keep falling in love with it.

A post shared by Luxury Wig Maker 👋 (@jadagiovonni) on

What is a current hair trend or style you wish would die out and why?

Incorrectly done lacefronts. It’s like, girl, you know that doesn’t look real! But, to each his own.

What is a major misconception that many of your clients have about wearing wigs?

When they see a flawlessly glued install, like a ponytail glued in the back, they think that they can achieve that same install, but glue-less. I tell my clients all the time that you can’t have glued expectations with a glue-less wig.

For those who don’t know, what’s the difference between lace fronts, closures, sew-ins, and quick weaves? Which is healthier for your hair and which is the most high maintenance?

So glue-less lacefronts or lace closure wigs would be the healthiest, because they provides less tension and heat applied to your natural hair. Anything with glue is high maintenance, since it’s not permanent and can wear off as you sweat and in everyday life.

READ ALSO: The truth about where hair extensions come from and if you’re getting your money’s worth

Tell us about a difficult time in your life that you overcame, and explain how you did so.

I remember back when sew-ins were my most requested style, before the wig movement, and my assistant skipped work. I had about 9 sew-in appointments, where I had to braid and sew each person in myself – and it was the day before NYE.

For those who are unfamiliar with sew-ins, you have to braid your clients full head, sew their natural braids together, and then sew their hair extensions in. I had an assistant to handle this step for me, as it was super time consuming. I was livid when she skipped, but I couldn’t let that stop me from doing my work.

I explained to all my clients what happened, and one of my clients even helped me braid that day! I definitely made sure to not only tip her but discount her install, as well. I ordered pizza for my customers, and it actually turned out ok. I didn’t leave work that night until 3am and each appointment ran over about 2 hours.

But, we made it through. That was definitely one of the hardest times that I’v professionally experienced.

Where would you like to see your artistry in the upcoming year? What are a few of your short term goals or aspirations for the future?

I wanna see more effortless styling like Hollywood shit on everyday moms and grandmas. Like, so much volume and hair that it speaks before you do. I want people who’ve never heard of me or sat in my chair to be able to tell that I did your hair.

I also want to have a luxury and affordable wig line online, with a chain of storefronts. I want the affordable wigs to be carried in local beauty supply stores where they are already pre-customized to install yourself.

I absolutely want to see more women out of the sew-ins and quick weaves and into wigs and taking care of their natural hair. Giovonni Hair Company will also be offering a product line in 2018, and I’m super excited about that!

Heather LaRose’s new single is about how fake your “real friends” can be

We sat down with singer and songwriter, Heather LaRose, to talk to her about her new single, “Rumors,” the inspiration behind it, and how she will be working with anti-bullying organizations in the near future.

Check out the exclusive interview below!

A post shared by Heather LaRose (@heatherlarose) on

Heather at Galore’s Sleepover Party with Flirt Cosmetics

What is “Rumors” all about?

I worked on “Rumors,” with my friends, Gregg Sgar and Matt Pelosi, who happen to be extremely talented musicians. I was in the middle of trying to figure out where my self-worth came from a few months ago. At the time, I was living in LA, and found out just how fake people can be.

There were “friends” who I thought I was super close with, but I found out they weren’t who I thought they were. Behind my back they were saying some of the rudest things; they were just using me to get into parties, taking videos of me while I was getting dressed and sending them around to people, and they were spreading rumors. It really got to me and brought me back to high school, remembering how toxic all of that drama was.

I believe that other people’s words don’t define me, so I wrote “Rumors” to reflect on high school, comparing it to my time in LA. All of the lyrics come from a place where, although what people were saying about me hurt, I knew I was bigger than the names I was being called.

What is your favorite line from the song?

I would say either, “I was the new girl on the block, pride swallowed like a blue pill,” or, “All of the rumors echo through the night, dress up the truth, and turn it into lies.”

What is your goal for your fans when they hear “Rumors?”

My goal for Rumors is to have people make it their own. Most songs about overcoming negativity and finding your self-worth are overly peppy, which may push people away from a message that they need to hear.

I made sure to pick dark, angsty chords to reflect how I was feeling, and how so many other people unfortunately feel. The chorus is bold and empowering, without sugarcoating the situation. Sometimes you have to face gossip and rumors head on and be louder and stronger then they are.

What is your advice to someone who may be feeling beat down or bullied?

If anyone is getting bullied or put down, I want you to know that you are so much more than the words being said about you. I hope that when you listen to “Rumors,” you feel unstoppable.

What can we expect from you next?

This summer, I’m extremely focused on putting out new music. I’ll be releasing a new single every other month. This past year, I’ve written, learned, and grown so much as an artist and as a person, that I want to share the new material.

I’ll also be performing at events including Miami Swim Week, festivals on the east coast, pop-ups in the Hamptons, and releasing new content online. Outside of music, I’ll be partnering with different mental health organizations and anti-bullying groups to help raise awareness. More details about all of that will be announced soon on my social media!

This video is a love letter addressed to the incredible city of Los Angeles

London-based photographer, videographer, and director, Haris Nukem, loves visiting Los Angeles.

In fact, he basically wrote a love letter to the city, via video. Check out his words and video below, and fall in love with the city for yourself (and maybe, all over again).

“Every time I visit Los Angeles, I’m humbled to meet so many wonderful people.

Shooting in the city fills me with a type of inspiration I just don’t get anywhere else. It’s in the DNA. I wanted not only to take pictures on my last trip to LA, but to make a visual tribute to this place and these people that inspire me so uniquely.

This piece is basically a love letter that starts about writing home, to where our protagonist, played by Vendelai, moved from. But, she then gets distracted into being directed at Los Angeles.

READ ALSO: EXCLUSIVE PHOTO DIARY: APEX Social Club’s Memorial Day Weekend grand opening was packed with celebs

With her overlooking her balcony, I really wanted to highlight that there’s this idea of a troubled, inherently evil LA. To show that the city is in a permanent conflict with this creative, beautiful, inherently good LA.

We see Vendelai as herself, but then also her obsessions forming as she’s coated in $100s. We see all of the wonderful people and scenes that have influenced her, some kind of trippy or aggressive some kind of nurturing or somber, all before we snap back into reality again, where the balance is restored.

It’s like the thrill of trying to balance the influence keeps her in love.”

This girl wrote a book for young women struggling with borderline personality disorder

Violet Paley is a young writer based in Los Angeles, who has recently written a book called “Frozen Oranges.”

The book is an inside view of Violet’s life as a young woman struggling with borderline personality disorder. Violet discusses everything from sexual encounters, depression, and more, mixed with her own bit of humor.

“Frozen Oranges” includes illustrations by Adrienne Sacks, poetry, and more, and it’s extremely comforting to any young woman who is going through the same thing.

We interviewed the author, Violet, and talked to her about the inspiration behind her book.

You can purchase the book on Amazon HERE, and you can check out the interview and exclusive photo pages below!

READ ALSO: Post-break up depression can be hard to kick, but you are not alone and this is not the end of the world

What inspired you to write your book?

I was very inspired by the writing style of Maggie Nelson. She’s honest and her stream of consciousness is super relatable.

Who, if anyone, helped you write your book to what it has become?

My friend, Jacq the Stripper, combined humor with sluthood in her own book. She did that in life as well, and I’ve admired it since I was just a 20-year-old, barely functional, alcoholic in New York.

I went to her apartment before we had a stand up show and was just enthralled that she could be so unapologetically herself. She definitely influenced the way I looked at myself – thus, the way I wrote about myself.

My friend and hero, Rose McGowan, spilled her guts in her memoir, too. The way she went about sharing her truth and being brave when everything, and everyone, else was trying to keep her down.

What is your favorite thing about your book?

My favorite thing about the book is that since it’s come out, young women have reached out to me – many of whom have borderline personality disorder. They all told me that the book gave them a voice or that they related to the material.

Things like that make me want to tear up. If it makes anyone feel less alone, then I think I’ve contributed something good.

ANTM model, Tatiana Elizabeth, is licensed to help your skin look flawless af

You might remember seeing Tatiana Elizabeth‘s face awhile back on “America’s Next Top Model,” but these days she’s extremely focused her beauty brand, SkinBUTTR.

The Queens, New York native model and boss sat down with us to discuss all the ups and downs of her career. She talks about how she got fired from her job before joining “ANTM,” her love for skin, and why she’s so obsessed with all things beauty.

Keeping reading for alllllll the tea!

READ ALSO: Heather LaRose’s new single is about how fake your “real” friends can be

What’s your background and how would you describe what you do? Tell us your story.

I’m a model, business owner, and influencer. I’m from Queens, but spent a lot of my childhood back and forth between there and Maryland. I’ve always been very into fashion and beauty and I spent endless amounts of time on Tumblr – idolizing celebrities, fashion, and people who are now my peers.

I always knew I wanted to be a part of the industry and spend my time doing something creative but I didn’t know what. Once I graduated high school, I hopped from college to college until I decided to move to New York on my own.

I had like, 3 jobs, and I would find little modeling gigs on Model Mayhem – pretty much hustled my way into modeling. I knew that modeling in itself wouldn’t support the lifestyle I aspired to have, so I became an esthetician, and started skinBUTTR.

What were you doing before “America’s Next Top Model,” and how did you get to where you are now?

Right before “ANTM,” I got fired from the last job that I had at a spa as an esthetician. I had just started skinBUTTR and was a signed model. Once ANTM came along, I knew I could take the opportunity to grow skinBUTTR and my career as an influencer and model. I took that opportunity and have been working hard ever since to remain relevant and busy.

What made you want to create SkinButtr? What do your products focus on and how long did the process of creating this brand take?

I created SkinBUTTR because I used to make little formulations and DIY body scrubs and butters for myself. My skin can get extremely dry and cracked, and I saw the difference it made on my skin. A light bulb went off in my head that others could benefit from the products as well.

I went to school for esthetics to learn a bit more about skin and how exactly to go about making and starting a skincare line, and it has grown from there. My products focus on hydrating the skin – the scrub exfoliates away the dead dry skin, and the BUTTRs lock in the moisture and deeply hydrate the skin, giving that famous skinBUTTR glow.

I developed skinBUTTR for about a year before launching and it’s been around for about 3 years.

What was your experience on “ANTM” like? What were some of your favorite moments and what do you feel like you learned as a model?

“ANTM” was an amazing experience. We filmed for a summer and it was like being at sleep away camp – just without phones. The girls and I became really close and I was able to connect with people that I probably would’ve never met otherwise.

My favorite moment was in the beginning – finding out that I made the final 14. It was the best feeling knowing that no matter how far I would make it I was now a part of a show that played such a huge part in my childhood was an indescribable feeling.

ANTM put me in the room with some pretty amazing people that I am inspired by. It also allowed me the opportunity to watch closely on how they move through the industry, which has made me more comfortable and confident in situations as a person and a model.

Tell us about a difficult time in your life that you overcame and explain how you did so.

The most difficult time in my life was when my mom put me out after I graduated high school. I graduated a year early so I was only 16. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, my parents were pressuring me to go to college, and I felt pulled in so many directions.

I was genuinely afraid for my future, and depressed and afraid that I wouldn’t be successful. I didn’t really have much guidance, just people telling me what to do without actually explaining why and how it would benefit me. I overcame this by just pushing through.

I had to find myself and not be so concerned about others and their opinions – whether it was friends, family, parents. I learned to trust my instincts, be smart, research, and ultimately just be a genuine and happy person. Thus far, things have been working out. I’m living out my dreams, independently.

What is something about you that people can’t read about online? Something you don’t share with most?

I share most off my life online, it helps me feel more connected and have something to relate to. But, outside of the things I do share, I have really bad anxiety. I often am super concerned and worried about situations that I don’t have control over.

But, I’ve learned to flip it around into a benefit – I feel like it helps me accomplish more. I work the best under pressure. In addition to the pressures I already face, me putting that extra pressure on myself pushes me to go that much harder and get through.

What’s your everyday skincare routine? Walk us through the process.

Every day I cleanse, tone, and moisturize with the Skin by SkinBUTTR line. In the shower, I scrub about every other day and apply SkinBUTTR body butter all over – my fave is “Pomango!”

What do you want our readers to learn from this interview?

It’s cliché, but I want people to know that anything is possible with the right attitude. It took me a long time to realize that things weren’t happening for me because I didn’t know who I was.

I had to learn how to truly be happy within myself, focus on myself, and take the necessary steps to make things happen for myself. I hope for anyone reading this to know that you can do whatever you want to do with hard work and persistence.

This expert knows how to find the best skincare products for summer

As summer approaches, our skin does a complete 180. You basically have to adjust your entire skin care routine with change in weather (no matter if you’re in LA or NYC).

If you’re like us, you have no clue on what products to use. But, don’t worry – we sat down with Dr. Lortscher from Curology to get his top recommendations on the best moisturizers, cleansers, face masks, and more for the summer.

Join Galore Beauty for exclusive convos, content and more.

A post shared by Curology (@curology) on

What are some really good cleansers we can use to clean our pores?

In drier climates, you could swap out the creamier cleansers for a gel-based, such as Avene Cleanance Gel or Boscia Purifying Cleansing Gel. If you have oily skin in the summer, opt for a foaming cleanser such as CeraVe Foaming Cleanser or No 7 Beautiful Skin Foaming Cleanser.

Micellar water is also a lighter option as a makeup remover and/or cleanser. Some good options are Bioderma Sensibio H2O and Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water.

Other than cleansers, is there anything we can use that will not only cleanse, but hydrate our skin as well?

Lighten your skincare as the days get longer and lighter. Think of creams as heaviest, lotions as intermediate, and serums as lightest. By leaving out airtight moisturizing ingredients such as petrolatum or mineral oil, serums are the lightest form of hydration, perfect for the summer months.

A Vitamin C serum such as Paula’s Choice Resist C15 Super Booster can fortify your skin against ultraviolet damage as Vitamin C has been shown to stimulate collagen production to repair fine lines and wrinkles, and inhibit melanin formation.

What are some of your go-to moisturizers in the summer?

For moisturizers, I recommend a lighter, gel-based moisturizer that will provide hydration without leaving skin feeling greasy. Many Asian Beauty products have perfected the light-but-effective moisturizing product.

Try Scinic Aqua AIO or LJH TeaTree 90 Essence. Another good option commonly found in drugstores is Clean & Clear Morning Burst Hydrating Gel Moisturizer.

Everyone’s a stan for masks these days. What are some of your top recommendations for all skin types?

Hotter temperatures in summer can mean more sweat, an oily T-zone, and more redness. In areas with dry summer heat, a hydrating mask may provide some hydration for your skin. Dr. Jart Water Replenishment Cotton Sheet Mask with witch hazel and Avene Soothing Moisture Mask with safflower oil can be hydrating and soothing masks to try.

For those with oily skin that can be exasperated in the summer heat, clay or mud masks may be a good option. Clay masks usually contain bentonite and kaolin clay; these draw out water and oil from your skin. Some masks you can easily find on Amazon: Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay and Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque.

A favorite of ours is the PETER THOMAS ROTH Un-Wrinkle™ 24k Gold Intense Wrinkle Sheet Mask. Part of the mask’s secret is that it contains sodium hyaluronate, a form of hyaluronic acid. The topical application of HA has been shown to have a positive effect on the appearance of wrinkles and to improve the perceived elasticity of the skin.

The mask also contains peptides, which are made up of amino acids and may work to firm the skin. However, the effects are temporary, and likely last no longer than a late night out. This mask also sparkles, adding a little fun to your routine!

As we head to the beach and day parties this summer, what are some sunscreens that are actually good for our skin?

Don’t skimp on sun protection! Most sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher do an excellent job of protecting against UVB. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

It is also important to remember that high-number SPFs last the same amount of time as low-number SPFs. A high-number SPF does not allow you to spend additional time outdoors without reapplication.

Neutrogena® Pure & Free® Baby Sunscreen Lotion SPF 60+ doesn’t seem to leave a white tint, fragrance-free, good for sensitive skin, water resistant for 80 minutes. Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 60+ is fragrance-free, good for sensitive skin, water resistant for 80 minutes.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Mineral Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid is non-whitening, with a matte finish, has a universal tint – more coverage than an untinted sunscreen, provides a natural glow, water resistant for 40 minutes.

For chemical sunscreens, it’s best to wait at least 20 minutes after application for sunscreen to take full effect. It can become unstable after hours of exposure to UV light, but stabilizing agents can help.  Check out Aveeno’s Smart Essentials Daily Nourishing Moisturizer SPF 30. It contains sodium ascorbyl palmitate (a form of vitamin C) which can help repair fine lines and wrinkles and treat sun/age-related dark spots and has retinyl palmitate (a retinol) which can help with anti-aging concerns such as fine lines and dark spots.

If your skin needs a combination physical and chemical sunscreens my top recommendation is EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 and CeraVe AM SPF 30. It contains niacinamide, which can help lighten dark spots from years of sun exposure, decrease redness, and may reduce fine lines and improve skin elasticity. It also contains hyaluronic acid, which can retain moisture, having a positive effect on the appearance of wrinkles, improving skin elasticity.

If you haven’t heard of Nova Miller yet, it won’t be long till you’re a fan. Her debut EP, “Yellow,” is officially out today and we have all the links to our favorite new album here!

Spotify: Nova Miller “Yellow”

iTunes: Nova Miller “Yellow”

Nova Miller is a teen, indie-pop singer/songwriter from Sweden who is ready to take on the world with her music. Disney actress, anti-bullying activist, singer, and proud vegan – this girl is the total package.

She has sold out shows all over Sweden and will soon be on her way to your hometown. Until then, her EP will most definitely be blaring out the windows of our cars all summer long. Do yourself a favor and check out “Yellow” and keep scrolling below to get to know one of pop music’s hottest new artists, Nova Miller.

Tell us about your debut EP album “Yellow” – what are the inspirations behind it?

This EP is super special to me because it’s the first body of work I’ve ever released. I’m so excited for people to hear some of the songs I’ve been working on over the last year. It’s called “Yellow,” because it’s my favorite color.

When you listen to the EP, a lot of the songs are uptempo and dance-y so it makes you feel kind of sunny and ‘yellow’.’ Every song represents a moment or season in my life so it’s really personal to me. Ah, I’m so excited to release it!

Is there any particular message you are trying to say with “Yellow?”

Yeah! I feel like a lot of people sing about and romanticize sex, drugs, alcohol, and feeling bad, and I didn’t want to do that. I want to uplift and inspire people and for them to feel the way I do when I hear “Yellow.”

I hope that people that don’t know how to put their feelings into words can listen to “Yellow,” and think, “That’s exactly how I feel.”

You play the violin, piano, and guitar. Which is your favorite instrument to play?

Guitar is my main instrument for sure, so I play that all the time. But, I like them all in different ways! I feel like I can get a little more vibey when I write songs on the piano. The violin is always going be special for me but I don’t really practice it anymore. It would be so cool to play my own strings in a song one day though.

Who is your biggest inspiration in music right now?

At the moment, Bruno Mars, for sure. I’m obsessed with everything about him. My biggest inspirations of all time, though, will always be Christina Aguilera and Michael Jackson!

Any specific feelings you are hoping to evoke in people when they listen to your new album?

Yeah, for sure! I have a song on the EP called “Plastic,” and another called “Patterns.” I think with these both songs have a similar theme of loving yourself before rushing into loving someone else. If you don’t, you usually end up hurting them and the people around you.

What has the reaction been like from your fans to the release of your new single “Turn Up The Fire?”

It’s been amazing! I’m so lucky. It’s the first song of mine to hit 2 million, so the response has been super positive from all over the world! People have even made covers and lyric videos which feels crazy!

I actually pinch myself. It has been incredible. I can’t believe I have a career that allows me to make people happy and do what I love. My fans are seriously the best!

What is your songwriting process like?

I start with a concept – something I am feeling or feel like I need to process. Then, I find some chords I like. When I feel a vibe, I start to write lyrics and melodies at the same time. I usually record on my voice memos and improvise then listen back and take what I like.

This is my favorite part of doing what I do because I can really tap into myself and get creative. I also co-write and collaborate often which is always a lot of fun and sometimes challenging. But, I am learning every day.

What can we expect from Nova Miller this year after your album is released?

I’m doing heaps of acting and planning on being in the US more and more. You’ll be seeing more live performances, more music, more everything!

Your music video for “Turn Up The Fire” has been very successful gathering 2 million views. Congrats! What are your hopes for the rest of the EP and your music career in general?

Thank you! With the EP, I don’t want to put too much pressure on it. I’m really enjoying the journey and discovering myself and growing up with my fans along the way. My plan is to make sure I can do music my entire life.

It makes me the happiest person and it is so important to me. I literally don’t function without it! It’s really important for me also to be able to make an impact and give back in some way. I think music is a gift.

You are going to be performing at the Princess of Sweden’s birthday celebration soon – how are you feeling? Nervous? Excited? What do you have planned for this show?

Nervous! Honored! Excited! We’re in the process of going through the details soon, but honestly, I’m just looking forward to getting to play for Victoria and to have the opportunity to play to like 10 different countries. It’s crazy!

You participated in the #NeverAgain: A Live Concert Event. Tell us what it was about and how did it go?

The whole event was about coming together as a generation and making a difference, since at this point, it’s a matter of life or death. This is something really important to me and it was such a honor to be a part of and to get to use my platform to speak out for those who can’t.

You are very passionate about being an activist for anti-bullying. How do you plan to use your voice and music to advocate for this cause?

It is still very hard for me to talk about as I still haven’t really processed my own experience with bullying. I think a lot of people, myself included, don’t realize that they’re being treated poorly and that they’re actually being bullied.

It’s not always physical – it’s mental and it’s easy to deny, especially if it’s coming from someone you trust. I just hope by talking about it I can help other people realize what’s going on and that it’s okay to not always feel okay. It’s so important to ask for help and understand that you’re not alone.

How would you describe your personal style?

My style is like an extension of my personality. It’s colorful and different each day depending on my mood. I can go from muppet to Cher’s Swedish twin in like 10 seconds, it’s awesome. I also really like the fashion from the 70’s, and matching colors, especially yellow, of course. Did I mention my EP “Yellow,” is out June 1st?

What is your favorite piece in your closet?

I have this huge fluffy faux fur yellow jacket from Nelly.com that I wear all the time. I wore it in the “Turn Up The Fire,” video and you can see it all over my Instagram. It’ll be like 80 degrees but you know I’m still trying to wear the hell out of it.

Favorite designer?

To be honest, I’m not making Gucci money at the moment, but if I was, I would be head to toe in their clothes – I’m obsessed. But I have had the opportunity to work with big brands such as Marc Jacobs and even ASOS, so I’m so grateful that they’ve been able to hook me up when I need to look cute for whatever reason. But, I’m happy shopping in thrift stores!

What is your must-have beauty product at the moment?

Always coconut oil! I am a vegan with bleached hair and dry skin so there is no end to what I use coconut oil for. I love me some Kevin Murphy hair care, also.

Favorite song of all time?

Easily “Ain’t No Other Man,” by Christina Aguilera and Cher’s rendition of “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World.” I can’t pick one!

Favorite vegan snack?

The Converse x MadeMe NYC collaboration wants to showcase that girls can be sneakerheads, too

I can’t believe that this is something that’s even in question, but yes – many people only think of dudes when they hear the word, “sneakerhead.”

Legendary sneaker brand, Converse, decided to link up with cool-girl brand, MadeMe NYC, to create the perfect by-girls, for-girls collection. Trust me, if you’re into shoes, you’ll be into this collab.

Converse One Star x @mademe_nyc available now at Converse.com.

A post shared by Converse (@converse) on

With the crazy colors involved in the collection, we understand that the sneakers could seem intimidating to style. But, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered. We took the liberty of styling the green pair with two different outfits, casual and going-out, so that you can see just how easy they actually are to incorporate into a look.

Pants: Reformation, Shoes: Converse x MadeMe

Don’t let anything stop you from wearing this dope collection!

The purpose of the collab, as I mentioned, is to create collection that “deviates from the male-dominated sportswear market,” says Converse. And honestly, I couldn’t stan that mission statement more.

I definitely feel that women aren’t really taken seriously in streetwear or sportswear. Which is obviously weird, since women make up a huge percentage of the clothing and shoe markets (duh). And, of course, we too are active and could benefit from some collections that are wearable and cute.

Also, most streetwear and sportswear collections are made mainly for men – this Converse x MadeMe collab was made for women exclusively, and I like the sound of that.

“With its unparalleled brand persona — a combination of New York City’s queer, fashion, and rave cultures that harnesses the energy of the riot grrrl movement – MadeMe represents the dynamism of downtown youth. [The collection] channels the attitude of today’s NYC rebel girls through daring colors, textured materials and nostalgic idiosyncrasies,” says Converse.

The collection is also meant to celebrate and reignite 90s nostalgia – something that is a big commodity right now. Everyone currently wants to recreate 90s vibes in the fashion world. I think this collection does a great job of combining that nostalgia with 2018 it-girl feels.

Shirt: Vintage, Jacket: Van De Vort, Shoes: Converse x MadeMe

So, who is this collection for?

“A cool girl. Independent, who will take risks and not worry about what everyone else is wearing or doing,” says MadeMe creative director, Erin Magee. “It’s a girl who is attracted to authenticity and wants to explore street, rave, queer, and 90s subculture.”

We stan.

The center of attention in the collection is a platformed One Star – a shoe that was once huge during the 90s rave and club culture. This collections One Star platform is reimagined through a six-wale corduroy, chunky, ribbed fabric. The shoes are also made with premium Napa leather, MadeMe graphics, goat leather collars, canvas lining, and thick cotton laces (with the choice of plain or MadeMe laces, which are cute as hell).

The collection also features some really cute streetwear pieces, including a track jacket, an oversized track pant, a long-sleeved tee, an oversized pair of  shorts, and a super mini backpack (tg). They were “all designed to compliment the female body and modern idea of mix-and-match styling,” says Converse.

We are so stoked about being able to wear this collection around, and to finally have a streetwear collection with solely (lol, sorry, had to) women in mind. Can’t wait to rock these platforms this summer.

The collection launched on May 24, and the prices range from $30 to $110 on converse.com, Dover Street Market, Urban Outfitters and select retailers.
