MedMen is, undoubtedly, one of the most recognizable names in the cannabis industry in 2018.
The brand officially has 18 locations, including a newly opened Abbott Kinney location. This is particularly amazing, due to the fact that Abbot Kinney has long since been a famous shopping district for LA’s finest.
MedMen doesn’t just carry all your favorite cannabis products and brands – it offers them all up in a welcoming, efficient, and safe environment. Plus, everyone who works at their locations is an expert of their product. Any question you have can be fully answered.
The cannabis chain is also super dedicated to breaking down the stigma of what the word “stoner” means.
Obviously, “stoner” comes with some negative implications. But why?
MedMen released a campaign called, “Stoner Stigma,” and it includes billboards or everyday people from every background and job type imaginable, and depicts them as just that – normal, everyday people, who just happen to smoke weed. Why they smoke weed? Well, that’s not anyone’s business in the first place. It could be for fun, for health, or anything else – it truly shouldn’t matter either way.
They are trying to redefine the word stoner in a positive and real way. Even in places like California where marijuana is becoming increasingly legal, there is still such a stigma around it.
So many celebs, friends of yours, and friends of mine are obsessed with MedMen. It’s the place to be – the Apple store of weed. Celebs like Ireland Baldwin, totally stan MedMen and its wide range of amazing products. Ireland even attended the Abbot Kinney location opening party. The store is in “her neck of the woods,” she says, and she’s a big MedMen fan.
We sat down with the model and DJ to discuss her favorite things from the MedMen shelves, her positive journey with marijuana use, and how weed keeps her centered. Check it out below!
Tell us about the new MedMen Abbot Kinney location!
The AK location was so cute and convenient! Right in my neck of the woods.
What do you think MedMen brings to the table as far as normalizing marijuana consumption?
I think that MedMen is really pushing the “stoner” stereotype in a corner and really giving a platform to all different kinds of people who wish to smoke marijuana freely without a label.
How important is it to you to end the stigma of marijuana users?
Marijuana doesn’t make you lazy or stupid or incompetent. It only can if you want it to. That’s where I think education comes in. There are strains that help you accomplish things, there are strains that mellow you out. It’s about knowing what works for you and how you want to feel. Education will end the stigma.
How are you redefining the word stoner?
I smoke nearly everyday of my life. I take week-long, and even month-long, breaks. I don’t take prescription pills for anything. Not anxiety and not insomnia – nothing. I value my health and what I put into my body dearly, and I’m very much against the pharmaceutical industry in certain aspects.
I grew up homeopathic. I hardly took Motrin or Advil. I don’t rely on marijuana, but it does very much so aid my anxiety and my insomnia. It takes away my pains if I sprain an ankle or have a headache. It’s a beautiful gift this earth provided for us. But yes, people do find ways to abuse it – like all things. I’m not lazy. I don’t lay on my couch and rip my bong and eat Pringles all day.
Even though that sounds nice.
How do you incorporate marijuana into your life? How does it keep you centered?
I smoke when I want to unwind. I smoke when I want to get creative. I have all different reasons to smoke when I feel like it. The most important thing smoking weed has done for me is truly helped when my anxiety ails me. It has helped me relax so much and laugh the little things off.
People try to normalize marijuana by saying it’s purely medicinal, but obviously that’s not always the case (and it’s not a great stance to have). What are some non-medicinal ways you use marijuana?
Sometimes I just want to watch a really intense movie or a really stupid movie and I want to laugh my ass off. Sometimes I want to eat really good food and I want to taste all the flavors. The medicinal aspect is very important, but sometimes I just wanna get stoned.
You’re also a big fan of CBD. What are your favorite CBD products and why?
I’ve been using CBD body balms lately for back and neck pains. Works like a charm.
Go-to pick at MedMen?
Canndescent. They have the most incredible bud ever. I can’t deal with it.
Best part about MedMen’s dispensary process?
It’s so informative and helpful. You really know what you’re buying.
What kind of “stoner” are you?
Depends on what I smoke, but I’m typically the laugh until I’m crying kind, or the twelve bags of popcorn later kind.
Favorite MedMen location?
I would have to say Abott Kinney now!
How important is it to you that marijuana be fully legalized and why?
I think it’s time we accept what it has done for people and how it has helped so many. I mean, alcohol is great, but it’s so terrible for you. It rots your insides. It’s crazy how alcohol is looked at by society the way it is and then marijuana is like, some deathly, man-eating plant from hell.
What do you have to say to the marijuana haters? Any words to say to those who think it’s just a drug for “couch bodies?”
Try it.
Favorite strain?
Don’t have a favorite. Always depends on the mood.
Straight out of Nashville, Tennessee comes Melanie Faye, a rising R&B artist who is blowing up the Internet.
The 19-year-old musician’s soulful guitar playing will put you in a trance – especially when you watch her YouTube videos that have, obviously, gone viral and caught attention from other known artists including SZA. The “Love Galore” singer even retweeted one of Melanie’s videos.
With her deput EP, “HomoPhone,” to be released soon, there is no doubt a huge future is what’s ahead for this young star. We got to sit down with her to learn a little about her inspirations, her advice for any aspiring musicians, and more.
Read all about it below!
Do you think living in Nashville influenced you to pursue music at all?
No, growing up in Nashville did not (initially or directly) influence my decision to pursue music.
How did you get started playing guitar?
What actually influenced me to play guitar was Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock on Xbox 360.
You have a really unique style, how did you find your sound? What drew you to play soulful music as opposed to what’s more popular now?
I grew up listening to R&B music. My idols were Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey. When I play lead guitar, I often mimic the way a contemporary R&B singer performs melismatic vocal runs. I almost exclusively use jazz chords that I learned at the performing arts high school I attended.
Being that rappers and Hip-Hop artists love to “sample” jazz, gospel, and soulful r&b guitar, I would say that I actually do make music that is extremely relevant at the moment. For example, Chance the Rapper, Kehlani, SZA, Brent Faiyaz, and many other popular artists of today incorporate my style of guitar in their studio recordings and live shows.
The video of mine that went viral 10 months ago has since been sampled thousands of times by Soundcloud rappers and producers. Also, I’ve noticed that rappers like to refer to themselves as rockstars (e.g., Lil Uzi Vert, Trippie Redd, Bali Baby, and Rico Nasty) and like to make songs about being a rockstar (e.g., ‘Black Beatles’ by Rae Sremmurd and ‘Rockstar’ by Post Malone feat. 21 Savage).
If you could tour with anyone living or dead who would it be?
I would have to go on tour with Michael Jackson or Mariah Carey.
What was it like watching a video of you go viral online?
It was pretty cool and fun. It gave me a lot of momentum.
Did you ever end up speaking to the person that initially posted it?
There were hundreds of reposters prior to the video’s virality. But if you are referring the person who posted it on Twitter prompting it to go viral, then no, I have not spoken to that person.
Who’s the most outrageous person you’ve gotten to meet/work with since going viral?
I don’t even know where to start. Willow Smith, Mac DeMarco, Noname, Jamila Woods, Masego, Hayley Williams, Brad Shultz of CTE, Solo Woods, Isaiah Sharkey, Amandla Stenberg, Cam O’bi, Phoelix, Peter Cottontale, Nico Segal (fka Donnie Trumpet), Ashley Jackson (Jesse Jackson’s daughter), Francesca Simone, Tomo Fujita, Tosin Abasi, Tyler Cole, PJ Morton, Kerry 2 Smooth, and Bibi Mcgill are some of the most inspiring individuals I have ever met.
But, of all the people I have come across, Noah Urrea is definitely the most outrageous. He is unforgettable.
Sophie and Charlotte, a pair of sisters from New York City, run a fashion blog together called “Yin 2my Yang.”
The duo have totally different fashion senses, but still manage to mesh together organically when it comes to styling. That’s why, they told Galore, they love working together rather than apart.
Their dad may have been involved in fashion for the past 24+ years, but that’s not the only reason they love what they do. It’s a way for them to express themselves, have fun together, and be unique from one another. We sat down with these sisters to discuss their blog name, their favorite brands, and more.
Check out the interview and photoshoot below!
Why the name “Yin 2my Yang?”
As sisters, we are in sync with each other, but also are very different in personality – in lifestyle and in fashion. Yin and Yang, from Chinese philosophy, help balance the world’s universe. When working together, Yin and Yang sustain life and have the ability to influence everything.
The name for this blog was carefully chosen, as we are sisters whose styles complement each other at the same time as being very unique from one another.
You both have very different bodies and different approaches to fashion/styling. How do you think it benefits you guys to work together because of this?
We have different bodies and different approaches to fashion, but these differences are what make us special and stand out. We just compliment one another and no matter what we are wearing, somehow the mix works.
We feel our unique styles help us work well together because we know we look different (sometimes people are surprised to hear we are sisters and sometimes they ask if we are twins). We are confident that we can resonate with a wide audience due to our individual styles.
We often will do a “twinning” image where we wear an item of clothing that is the exact same, but we individually style the outfit around the twinning concept. The result is always aesthetically pleasing and without planning.
Which of you is girlier?
We both can have our girly moments where we like to wear feminine clothes and pretty accessories and feel all glammed up! However, Sophie describes her style as eccentric, contemporary, and spontaneous and I (Charlotte) describe my style as posh, feminine, and current. Yet not one of our styles really stands out as girly.
What is each of your dream outfits?
Sophie: I love to dress up for evening! I once wore a Philippe Plein evening gown that was so striking. It had become my dream outfit to recreate this look. I did a simple top bun which was all I needed to complete the outfit.
Charlotte: My dream look would be to recreate my 23rd birthday look. I wore a chainmail inspired dress that was so form fitting and sheer that it left little for the imagination. The back was completely open and overall the look was fun and so different. The long hair extension I added made the look almost like a James Bond recreation.
What do you guys wear while traveling?
When traveling, we like to be comfy, yet stylish! We usually wear some sort of sweat pant and a cool sweatshirt and sneakers. Wearing something that doesn’t wrinkle or isn’t binding is the best way to enjoy the ride and arrive in style. A comfortable choice allows us to be sure that we look good but can also relax on our journey.
What sets you guys apart from other bloggers?
In an ever-growing world of fashion bloggers and influencers, we have the goal to bring something new and different to the table, playing off each other to share fashion trends. We were keenly aware that the blogging world was inundated with single bloggers, and realized that as sisters, we would be able to reach an audience that had not yet been saturated.
Since a young age, we have been influenced by fashion because of our father. He has held an executive position in the fashion world for over 24 years. In addition, we have grown up in the media age and are aware of the power of social media and its ability to share ideas and trends. We feel we have a unique twist on representing fashion because our posts play off each other’s fashion differences and individual tastes.
In general the “real” aspect of our blog is also unique from other bloggers. People can identify with us and there is a comforting factor to our blog that we are just like everyone else.
Talk to us about your campaigns with Lee Jeans and Keds. How did they come about and who do you hope to collab with next?
Both the Lee Jeans and the Keds campaigns came about organically. They each reached out to us to see if we would be interested in collaborating, and of course we said yes. The Lee Jean collab was amazing. The end result was completely spontaneous and organic, we are very proud of it.
One of our strengths is being able to be very natural and calm in front of a camera and our unique relationship came through in the video footage. The Keds collab was equally amazing! It brought us to Coachella, which was a first for us. We went to the most glamorous party, The Zoe Report X Keds!
At this event, we rocked our adorable Keds and styled them with feminine dresses. Right now, we are doing a collab with Bumble and have an exciting summer full of events to look forward to.
What makes you gravitate to certain brands more than others?
We love working with brands that we would wear. However, we are open to a wide range of brands. Since we see ourselves as relatively young in this industry we are very receptive and open to many brands.
Recently, we have discussed how we may want to streamline our choices of brands we collab with. But, overall we have an open mind and are always excited when new brands approach us!
Is it hard working with your sister?
Working with your sister has its challenges, not going to lie. As any sister does, we can get annoyed with each other and disagree on things. Since we are family these disagreements sometimes are emotional and can lead into a full fledge fight.
However, we work hard at being as professional as possible and try to encourage a respectful work environment. Not taking everything personally. Trying to utilize our different strengths when working on our blog. Communication is one of the keys to getting along and when the line of communication is broken for whatever reason that often leads to disagreements.
Working together is a work in progress, but we are really lucky because for the most part we really get along!
On the other hand, is it awesome?
Yesssss, it is awesome working together! We feel truly blessed to be able to work as a team and more often than not we have so much fun together. We are able to set our own schedules, which is such a luxury.
Also, we go to events together, and can only imagine how lonely events can be if you always had to attend alone. We love to roar with laughter and find humor in everything we do. Overall, working as sisters is really great and such a unique opportunity that we wouldn’t want it any other way!
Favorite high-end designers right now?
Although we are suckers for a lot of high-end designers out there right now, we have 3 favorites that come to mind for specific reasons. Fendi – their bags continue to stay relevant by constantly updating their styles to be timeless and elegant, yet current and trendy.
YSL is awesome on so many levels. A lot of their collection pieces perfectly represent the day to night look where you could dress down with sneakers or dress up with a great pair of heels.
Then, we think Alexander Wang is so on point right now for a variety of reasons. Wang has the unique ability to cover every style such as edgy, chic, feminine, grunge, and so on.
Favorite new brands on the block?
New brands on our radar are Gabriella Hearst and Staud. Gabriella Hearst has a fantastic new bag collection. We love the structured shape of the bags that she makes in petite sizes, on very unique leathers and embossed fabrics.
Staud also has really fun bags. If you haven’t seen these bags they are a must! They are structured to look like a beach bag but have beautiful leather colors on the inside and on the unique square handles which make them so gorgeous visually that there a must have. It’s almost like having a bag within a bag.
What about fashion is so important to you guys?
Fashion is an art form for us. We dress ourselves to reveal who we are. We dress for success and this in turn portrays confidence, which is one reason so many people have loved our style. We both love to buy new things and wear them to special events or even just out and about.
We both take the time to look our best no matter where we are going or what we wear. It just who we are, and this approach to fashion is enhanced now that we are bloggers!
Chanel or D&G?
LOVE both! Chanel is a little more traditional and timeless with elegant styles and exquisite fabrics. D&G is a little more daring and spontaneous with incredible styles and bold colors! We could easily rock either one and make them look great!
Best place in the world for fashion?
Hands down, New York City. NYC is the epitome of fashion and we love the way anything goes here. We love being in an amazing city where fashion speaks volumes and is appreciated.
It goes without saying that New York City has deeply influenced our love of fashion. We are heavily inspired by the art and culture of New York as well as the stylish people that are within the city. It’s the perfect location for us to share our love of fashion!
Singer, songwriter, and all around artist, Kali Uchis, is also Galore’s newest Covergirl!
We are so obsessed with Kali, because she’s an artist that oozes the idea of truly being yourself. The singer is adamant about expressing herself in her own way – and if people don’t like it? She doesn’t care. It just makes her be even more of her unique self.
The singer is only 24 years old, and she’s blown up since she first began putting out music in 2012. She has already worked with some of the biggest names in music, because of her mesmerizing sound, her intense work ethic, and her determination to better the music industry and the world.
We sat down with Kali to discuss her family life, her stage name, her Colombian background, her hands-on way of working, and how she wants to change things for the better through her platform.
Check out the exclusive interview and photoshoot below!
Your dad gave you your nickname, Kali Uchis, which eventually became your stage name. Where did he get the nickname from?
My name is Karly-Marina Loaiza, so growing up my family would call me variations of it – Karlucha, Karluchis. My grandma made up all of her kids’ names to be unique so that no one else would have names like theirs.
I always wished my name was more original, too. I guess my dad named me something so basic because he was always embarrassed of his name and wanted me to have a “regular” name. So, when I became an artist, I decided to change my name to something that was still close to my heart, but that was unique to me.
You’re Colombian-American, and you actually used to live between both countries. How has your Colombian background influenced your music?
Colombia is the most inspiring place on the planet. It’s full of magic and strength, and the stories in our music reflect that. Some of the female artists from Colombia who have inspired me are Helenita Vargas, Claudia de Colombia and, of course, Shakira.
I’ve always been extremely proud of my roots, because in my darkest times growing up, being in nature in Colombia, or just in the streets with my cousins, have been some of my most beautiful memories. I am inspired just being there, breathing the air, smelling the rain, and hanging out at the lake across the street from my house.
You have a background in music production and video editing, and you also sing, write, product, direct, and even design clothing. What’s it like having so much experience in almost every field you delve into?
I don’t necessarily have experience, nor do I have the education or training. I just know what I want and have always had a very strong vision. At the end of the day I believe what’s most important is following your intuition and building openly on your visions, while giving yourself the space to evolve.
Pushing yourself to try new things and experiment with mixing all types of styles that inspire you when it comes to anything creative at all. You can’t buy intuition and you can’t teach taste.
Do you think you’re you more hands on than other artists?
I don’t think about anyone else’s process but my own. I’m happy I handle all my business. I prefer it that way because I know what I want. If one day I write something that becomes a massive success, that’s cool. But, either way I’m still proud to have the success I have on my own, because I know how hard this is.
I understand most times it takes a large team of people to produce massive success, but I’m hoping one day the world will see me as I am for my talent and that I won’t need to compromise in order to reach my goals. As for everyone else – as long as it’s not my business, and they aren’t hurting anyone, I don’t care how they run it.
All honest working people deserve to eat.
You’ve worked with some music greats, including Tyler, The Creator, Gorillaz, Lana Del Rey, and more. What is the best piece of advice you’ve received from the people you’ve worked with?
All of the peers I look up to in music have offered me more than I could have ever asked for – without even knowing it – just by working with me. It assures me that I’m going in the right direction, no matter what anyone else says. If self-established legends that you admire and respect want to work with you, what else could you ask for?
A long time ago, I made a promise to myself to never stop being who I am, no matter how hard this journey may get for me. Each of those people has come along in my life, like an angel (and sometimes at some of my weakest moments), and I know it was all for a reason.
You’ve said that you once lived out of your car for weeks on end, because your dad kicked you out. How did your childhood experiences inspire you to be where you are today?
I think it’s important at a young age to realize that nothing belongs to you except for your soul. Everything can be taken away from you at any moment, except your spirit or your ambition. No matter what happens to you or where you are in life, if you are granted the opportunity to see another day, there is always hope.
My life has had so many ups and downs and the most important lesson I ever learned from my childhood is that I am a powerful being all on my own. All on my own, I can create blessings out of thin air and multiply them.
You have said that your dad taught you a lot, though. What has he taught you that you carry into your daily work ethic?
My dad is the hardest working person I know. When he came to America, he only had a third grade education. He didn’t know any English, and he was an immigrant with a dream and nowhere to go. He grew up hungry in the streets as a little kid, and grew up to become the provider for our entire family.
He’s also very compassionate and always took care of other kids and families who needed help or were disadvantaged. He became an entrepreneur and does whatever he wants now, but he still takes pride in caring for community. I carry those morals and that work ethic with me every day in life.
You call yourself a visual artist. Can you explain what that means in your own process?
I am a very sensory person. I am very sensitive to all my senses – smell, sight, audio, touch, and senses that are not in the physical realm. I am inspired and touched by a lot of energy and I love to mix it all – audio with visual, taste with sound, or whatever the case. It makes me feel alive.
How would you describe your own music in three words?
Expensive velvet cake.
What is something you want your fans to know about you?
That I love each and every one of them very dearly and want them to be happy.
Can you tell us about the concept behind the “After The Storm,” video that took Twitter actually by storm?
It’s fun! It’s abstract, and I think, though the song touches on serious subject matters, the main focus is to remind you to never give up on yourself. It’s meant to be something feel good.
How do you deal with people who question you and create their own rumors about you?
I abandon and remove all negative, harmful thoughts of myself or of others from my mind. I know who I am, that’s the only thing that matters.
In the future, how do you want to use your platform to help others who may not have the same kind of exposure?
I have lots and lots of plans. The first thing that I have already started is selling my used or unused clothing and donating the money to an account that raises money to provide goods to families who are struggling. Families with single mothers, disabled children, survivors of abuse, or afro-latinx who cannot find good work in Colombia but just need a shot.
There is still a lot of discrimination in the Latin community, and I want to work to bring exposure to that and use my privilege to assist in any ways I can, along with plenty of other work that still needs to be done in the community.
In the United States, there is also a lot of work that needs to be done, especially with a Government who kills/imprisons more Latinx and black people every day, as well as cages our children for being undocumented. I feel very passionately about a lot of things, and I take nothing for granted, because I know how ugly the world can be.
I just want to help in any way possible and also use my platform to raise awareness when I can, while also keeping the balance of my music being a free space where people can escape from the hardships of life.
What awesome life advice do you have for the women reading this article?
You deserve everything you want in life and more, and anyone who tells you differently is a jealous liar.
What makes you feel in touch with yourself?
Playing chess or cards, smelling flowers, and hanging out in trees. I love to be one with the trees every once in a while. It’s good for you.
What’s on your rider?
Cherry lip ointment and fresh seaweed.
What do you have in your closet that you will never give away?
I would give anything in my closet up except a silver locket my dad gave me when I was little. It’s in the shape of a heart and says “Siempre Escucha tu Corazón.”
You may recognize Mishel Prada from her role as Gabi on the series, “Fear The Walking Dead: Passage” – one if the survivors of the zombie apocalypse (aka, a badass).
But, Mishel is now onto a much different role on the new STARZ show, “Vida,” which focuses on a Latinx-American family from Boyle Heights. The show focuses on two sisters (one of which is played by Mishel) and their relationship with their hometown and their mother.
What’s really awesome is that the entire crew behind the show is an extremely inclusive and diverse bunch. It is a “perfect example of the magic that can happen when we are given the opportunity to use our own voices to tell our stories,” Mishel tells us.
Check out our interview and photoshoot with the actress below, where we talk about her love of food, her rescue cat, how to get involved with helping Raices, and more.
Tell us about your time on the series, “Fear The Walking Dead: Passage.” What was the most important thing you learned about acting while working on that set?
I thought I was going in for a commercial when I went in to audition for it. I showed up, got the sides, and they were 2 pages long! They were so intense, and I thought, “Why do I have to cry in this commercial? “I was not prepared. They gave me the option to come back after lunch and take more time to prepare, but there was no way I was going to deal with traffic heading back to the Valley from Santa Monica.
I just went for it and did a cold read. Even when I found out I had booked it, I still had no idea what it was. It wasn’t until wardrobe called, that I found out it was for “Fear The Walking Dead.” So, I guess with that series, I learned not to over think things too much. And I also learned how to kill a zombie.
How were you similar, if at all, to your character, Gabi, on the show?
Gabi is very unsure of herself and she doubts her own power and abilities. She is controlled by the people around her. I can definitely relate to times in my life where I have felt that way.
She is also a survivor. No one stays alive in a zombie apocalypse by accident. We see her take back her strength and confidence in the series. It’s something I’m constantly learning to do.
You’re now starring in the new STARZ show, “Vida,” as the character, Emma. What is “Vida” about, for those who haven’t seen it yet?
“Vida” is at its heart of story of family, acceptance, and self-love. It centers around two Mexican-American sisters who are forced to go back to Boyle Heights, the east LA Chicano neighborhood they grew up in, because their mother, Vidalia, unexpectedly passes away. Both of the sisters view leaving their neighborhood behind as a badge of honor, as an “I got out.”
Emma was sent away at a young age by their mother because Emma was found kissing another little girl, so you can imagine how messy emotions get when she also finds out that her traditional Mexican mother was actually married to a woman for the last two years.
How does the theme of family play into “Vida?”
Family is everything in “Vida.” Both sisters have created these representations of themselves that they present to the outside world, but when they get together they see right through each other’s bullshit in a way that only family can. You also see how differently each person is grieving, and how challenging it is for them to connect to each other. It’s a difficult homecoming for each of them, but in the end, they need each other.
How does it feel starring in a show that is heavily focused on Latinx culture and actors – something that took a long time to come by in the entertainment industry? This show is a huge deal to be a part of. What do you hope is accomplishes for the viewers?
It’s such a privilege to bring life to a story that digs so specifically into the Latinx-American experience. You feel a connection to the country your parents or grandparents immigrated from, but you don’t feel at completely home there. Even though you were born in the United States, at times it can be difficult to feel “traditionally American.”
It’s an interesting limbo. I hope that our communities will feel seen, understood, and felt. I also hope that those people not from these Latinx-American communities will take the opportunity to get to know us. “Vida” invites you into our homes and encourages you to hang out in the living room and eat some flan.
This show is revolutionary in a lot of ways. Talk to us about that.
“Vida” is the perfect example of the magic that can happen when we are given the opportunity to use our own voices to tell our stories. We have a proud, queer, Latinx showrunner, an all-Latinx writers room, all women of color directing, and an incredibly inclusive crew. I feel so lucky. I also feel determined to make sure our show is not an outlier forever. We want “Vida” to be a beacon for others to follow.
You are also one of the founding members of Damarosa, a female art collection. Can you tell us about the collective and what it stands for?
We started it in 2015. My friend, Brittany Bogan, is an incredible fine artist and she had the idea to create an all-female art collective with diverse woman across the US and Mexico. Damarosa presents essential female authors alongside up and coming artists and filmmakers.
We re-examine the work of influential woman in literature through various mediums and intersectional frameworks. Issue 1 was based on Anais Nin’s Little Birds. Issue 2 was Rachel Carlson’s Little birds.
How can someone reading this get involved?
On the website, www.damarosa.com we sell a zine showing the works exhibited in the show. The money goes directly to funding future shows. Also, we are always looking for interesting spaces to exhibit our works in. So, if anyone has a space they are willing to donate, we are always open!
You’re big on getting involved and volunteering – what are the top three issues that you are really passionate and why?
Our “Vida” writers room along with Netflix’s One Day At A Time, began an initiative called “One Vida At A Time.” It’s helping raise funds for Raices bond fund, to help pay the bonds of parents who were detained and separated from their children at the border.
This is the first step to help reunification. I feel that it’s cruel the way that went down. How can you separate a child from their parent as a “deterrent?” We have to help in any way that we can.
How can someone reading this help with this cause?
If you follow #onevidaattime on Instagram or Twitter, you’ll see many people that have accepted the initiative. I would encourage others to donate to Raices Texas.
You love to cook – mainly Latin/Caribbean foods. What’s your favorite dish to make and why?
Soup! I love soup! I feel like a little witchy magician when I’m making it. It’s a liquid hug.
I love oysters; they are so grotesque and delicious. They are also usually only a few in front of you so you are forced to savor each one.
Favorite place to travel to?
I try to spend some of my time in New Orleans, I have a house there and no matter where I’ve travelled there always feels the best.
Dream spot to visit?
I mean, Japan is quite epic.
Tell us about your rescue cat, Louie.
I rescued him from my friend Cameron Richardson. When she began dating her current partner, Louie, she invited me over for a dinner party at his house. My boyfriend mentioned how cute the cat was, and he told us to take him. Cam’s son was allergic to cats, so we went home with a cat. He liked the cat, but he liked her more. We named him Louie.
I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you know of Sade. If you haven’t though, that’s completely fine, it’s just going to be hard to adequately portray the glory that is she in a concise intro.
But, to sum it up, Sade is an esteemed singer and songwriter whose extensive repertoire has included working with renowned musicians to releasing her own hit music. And Sade is the definition of a Jane of all trades: not only is she already remembered as one of the greatest female British solo artists of all time, the British Nigerian has also dabbled in menswear design, modeling and acting.
Needless to say, the artist has served as an inspiration to many other young artists who are coming up in the industries themselves.
Symon Leone, an African American and German model based in New York, is one of her many enthusiasts. And, much like her idol, she’s not limited to one craft: not only is she an international model, Leone has her own jewelry shop, Shop Love Leone. All in a day’s work.
As a model, it’s Symon’s job to portray different personas everyday: that being said, when photographer, Roman Yee (and fellow Sade fan), approached her about paying homage to the icon with a Sade-inspired shoot, she couldn’t refuse.
Sade to me means endearment and tranquility. I listen to Sade religiously, I can feel her lyrics speak to me. Her soothing voice and tone of song are just what you need to relax and unwind.
Embodying Sade in these photos made me feel strong and free. People have told me countless times in the past when I wear a red lip with my hair pulled back that I favor her so when Roman Yee asked to use me for this shoot, I happily accepted.
Does modeling feel different when you’re modeling as someone you look up to?
Modeling doesn’t feel any different modeling as someone else, this was my first time portraying someone else in photos so I just tried to completely capture her essence as much as possible to ensure I executed her look.
My favorite Sade song has to be, “By Your Side.” That was one of the first songs I was introduced to by my parents growing up, who also love Sade. Although I consider every song a favorite, “By Your Side” by far is my favorite.
What are your top three must-haves for a Sade inspired look?
The three must-haves for a Sade-inspired look are of course the signature red lip, thick gold hoops, and a slick back hair style (one of my all time favorite looks I wear myself).
Dua Lipa is on a roll, and I don’t just mean by way of her music career! Sure, the “New Rules” singer has enjoyed an influx of recent success, including, but not limited to, her recent hit single “One Kiss” featuring Calvin Harris, and her ongoing Self-Titled World Tour.
So yeah, actually, big whoop I guess, we’ve accomplished all of those things, too (jokes, definitely).
Though Dua is unmistakably a musical artist first, she’s also been gaining attention for her fashion choices as of late. The star has been cranking out killer look after killer look, not without the aid of her killer stylist Lorenzo Posocco. And the best part about Dua’s style? It’s the perfect balance of aspirational and attainable. She’ll mix some Gucci with some I.AM.GIA like it ain’t no thing.
The pop star’s style continues to evolve before our eyes, and it seems as though she thrives in the warmer months. So, we’ve decided to take note and bring the best of Dua Lipa’s style to your Summer wardrobe. And don’t worry, you won’t need to cash out on designer goods to achieve these Dua-inspired looks.
This is one of the coolest Summer outfits I’ve seen on her, just because it’s so simple yet so effective: get a bralette from virtually anywhere, steal one of your dads short-sleeve button up shirts, wear it open and throw on some athletic shorts. Who says you have to sacrifice comfort for style? Dua Lipa sure doesn’t.
This slip-dress-and-dad-sneaker ensemble is a classic example of juxtaposition done right. When wearing a silky slip dress, one certainly runs the risk of reading too formal, and when going for the chunky dad sneaker vibe, it can be hard to remain elevated. Luckily, Dua Lipa shows us how to secure the best of both worlds.
3. A hyper-cropped tee and some high-waisted flares
This is another outfit that’s quite simple yet so inexplicably good. Take any old tee of your choice (preferably a cute one that didn’t cost you too much money) and crop it like three to four inches shorter than you normally would: it’s okay, because you’ll be wearing – you guessed it – a very cute bralette underneath it that will unintionally-intentionally be peaking through. A pair of high-waisted flare jeans ties the look together with a surprisingly chic bow.
This was one of Dua Lipa’s wilder looks, and for that, it’s so classic.
You can find bodysuits like the one Lipa wears here on sites like Motel Rocks, Dolls Kill, and even Amazon or eBay (click the link to shop the bodysuits specifically — I got you).
So, it turns out Dua Lipa has dethroned whomever to become the Queen of Bralettes. It would seem that they’re the common thread in most of her outfits.
This yellow suited number was another hit from her Tokyo trip. Motel Rocks sells really awesome co-ords, but we don’t all have time or money to match our jackets to our pants. That said, we endorse color blocking to the fullest and feel that she would, too. Pair any brightly-colored jacket with some brightly-colored pants and a plain bralette (either white or black) to achieve a similar look.
Here, Dua’s traded in her bralette for a bustier, which is fine by us— either will do.
Again, it’s fine if you don’t have a denim double-breasted patchwork blazer to perfectly match your denim patchwork pants. Improvisation is key, friends.
As such, any casual Canadian tuxedo looks rad when paired with a semi-feminine bustier. Because again, we love juxtaposition.
I’ve come to the conclusion that Dua’s Tokyo outfits have been her best yet. Her stylist really killed this trip.
This tweed skirt suit, which I assume to be Chanel, looks so relevant when paired with sporty accessories like this headband and these bike shorts. Even if you don’t have a Chanel skirt suit to spare (although I can’t think of anything else to spend money on) a strongly-shouldered blazer (pretend that’s a real adjective), and an A-line skirt of the same color can be easily obtained.
Take those and throw on your favorite Nike bike shorts and plain black headband for an innovative ‘fit that will catch the eye.
8. Just a black vintage tee and your favorite leather jacket
Or, if you were feeling the simpler route, this black-tee-and-leather-jacket-look has never failed anyone.
Just borrow one of your dad’s old black shirts or find literally any cool black shirt and throw on your trusty go-to leather or vegan leather jacket number. To keep the look Summer-friendly, opt for a lighter jacket and throw on black bike shorts or denim on the bottom.
This was a great one. Whatever your favorite color to wear may be, pick that and go in.
I hope you’ve already copped your Air Force 1s after reading 10 ways to customize your sneakers for the summer. All you need now is some loose-fitting cargos and a matching plain top to go with them. Rock the look with some crisp white sneakers and lowkey socks of your choosing. Bam, done.
While we have already decided that Dua Lipa is unequivocally the Queen of Bralettes, she’s also the Princess of cat eye sunglasses.
If you haven’t already noticed, I’ll be the first to inform you that they are also extremely prevalent in her outfits. Cat eyes automatically make a look more interesting and fun with minimal effort.
That said, a pair of cat-eyes paired with a pretty, lightweight peasant top like the one pictured above is already a killer outfit. You could literally wear anything on the bottom without fucking it up, it’s a scientific fact. A denim skirt, denim shorts, fitted pants — try me. You can find tops like the one Dua wears here from places like She In, Are You Am I, Orseund Iris and Reformation.
This one’s super easy. If you can’t find a jacket that’s already cropped, just crop one of your favorite denim jackets or button-up tops (carefully and with love, please). Pair it with some high rise pants and a simple pant chain to keep things interesting.
As you can see, these outfits are all easier to emulate than they may initially appear to be. You don’t need a celebrity stylist of your own to achieve these looks. So go ahead and venture into your closet — you may be surprised what you come up with.
When photographer, Bryan Carr, was watching “Natural Born Killers” one night and decided he wanted to recreate parts of the film.
When he told his stylist friend, Joanie Del Santo, she went and watched the film for a refresher, and decided it would be cool to recreate the wedding scene from the movie. They had the models in mind, and everything just kind of meshed together perfectly.
Giving us western, Bonnie and Clyde, heatwave vibes, this shoot is a dream. Check out these photos and maybe go sweat it out in the heat with your boo. Or, maybe go take a trip to the desert with your gals and take some photos with the inspiration of this shoot.
Why not? It’s already hot anyway, and if you’re like me with no AC, it’s best to just go along for the ride.
If you didn’t watch “The Nanny” on Nick@Nite way past your bedtime, did you even have a childhood?
If not, you clearly missed out because Fran Fine (the iconic, funny, and undeniably lovable nanny on the show) was exactly that – FINE. She was also never caught dead in anything less than a perfectly-dressed-for-the-occasion outfit.
Plus, she did end up marrying Mr. Sheffield (even if it took 4 1/2 seasons), which is why we could all take a few hints from this living legend. Whether it’s short shorts or mini skirts, this is the guide you need to dress just like style icon Nanny Fine in 2018.
1. Co-ord Sets
Kim K who? Fran is the OG matching set queen – and we’re not talking earth tone sports bras and bike shorts. Get out of your comfort zone and reach for a set with a bold print or a unique shape.
Sporty, but make it fashion. We all know athleisure is in, but it’s time to take it to the next level. Forget sneakers, pair your next look with sheer black tights and stilettos!
No look worth doing is ever complete without a little (faux) fur. If you’re looking to make an entrance, even with the most casual of clothes, throw on a (matching) fur coat and you are instant glamour.
When you’re a nanny trying to get your millionaire boss to fall in love with you, you can’t exactly skimp out on skin. But, when you’ve been seen in almost every print and color imaginable to the human brain, sometimes a simple look is the way to go.
So remember, show off what you’ve got, laugh a little, and maybe you too can find a handsome British millionaire with a townhouse in New York City (even if you aren’t a Jewish girl from Flushing, Queens).
Up and coming R&B artist GoGo Morrow is the sultry vibe 2018 never knew we needed.
With a lot of new fresh and unique talent bursting from Philadelphia, GoGo Morrow sets herself apart from the rest. The R&B artist’s voice has lead her to opportunities that have put her in the likes of people such as Bobby Brown and touring with Lady Gaga.
Inspired by 90’s vocalist, GoGo’s music has that nostalgic feel you’ve been waiting for. Check out the interview and photoshoot with the artist below. We talk with the Philly native about her upbringing and the influences that cultivated who she is today.
What was it like moving from Philly to Los Angeles to pursue music?
It was a complete culture shock for me when I first got to LA. Its a different energy. Life just isn’t as urgent. I had a hard time adjusting as an east coast girl at first, because I’m used to being on the go. Everyone here was like, “Oh, let’s meet for lunch or drinks first before we get in the studio.”
In my mind, I’m like “What?! No, that’s a waste of time!” But I eventually gave in because I had no choice. Now, I actually like it. It’s easier to create great work that way. Once I learned that, life here became much easier for me.
How did you get into music and where to you get your inspo from?
My dad and uncle are both artists. They had a singing group back in the day called “The Golden Chandeliers.” I grew up listening to them sing at every family function and summer block party. I found inspo in all the oldies my dad played around the house.
My older sisters played 90’s throwback artists while babysitting me (Brandy, Destiny’s Child, SWV, Mariah Carey). I think my early years shaped my voice, however, I’m always finding music and style inspirations with current artists.
What challenges do you face in the music industry? Where do I begin?
I believe the Internet has both helped and hindered the music industry. It gave us a platform to put out our own ideas and projects without needing a machine or a helping hand. It is beautiful, but the side effect of that is the increase in people who are just doing it because they can.
As a female artist making your way through a male-dominated industry with a sea of people trying to do what you’re doing for all different reasons, adding another layer to that is a challenge. Although I love it, and I believe I have something to offer the world. The fight is worth it for me.
What are you currently working on now?
I just filmed my music video for my debut single, so were getting ready to roll that out and I’m really excited! In addition, I’m working on my full length project.
Who are you currently listening to?
I listen to a lot of different types of music. At the moment, Maroon 5, Playboi Carti, and Post Malone have been in heavy rotation for a few weeks now. All of them have pretty dope albums.
You have such a unique style. How important is fashion to you?
Thank you! Fashion is just as important as music is to me. I believe fashion and music are synonymous. They are both creative forms of expression and each of them help boost the effectiveness of one another. Imagine a fashion show without music, or a music video without a wardrobe that fits the theme of the song. Both music and fashion can convey a message and together they make the perfect story. What do you want your fans to take away from your music?
My music has become a lot more honest than it used to be. I realized after years of writing music that I was only following trends. I wasn’t connecting because I wasn’t being honest, but after failing so many times, it forced me into the most vulnerable place I’ve ever been in. My walls came crashing down and now I’m telling my own stories for the people who can relate and have been looking for someone to connect to.
My name is Juan Garza, also known as the drag hag herself, Babydoll! I’m a fun, crazy, colorful, queer, POC clown. I’d like to think I’m a sexy, hentai girl, but I’m just an obese weaboo with too much time on my hands.
How did you get into drag makeup?
It all started when I was a 15 year old young queer kid finding out about RuPauls Drag Race (cliche right?). It all started on Season 6, the beginning of what I didn’t expect would change my life forever. After that season, it left me so inspired, but it wasn’t until Season 7 that I was pushed to pursue drag and let my creativity flourish.
Pearl from that season was my biggest influence. DragCon 2015 rolled around, I luckily was able to meet Pearl, and that interaction with her pushed me to finally start to create. That exact day I remember roaming the convention hall looking for makeup to buy, and I picked myself up some Kryolan sticks, since they were the rage at the time.
What was the process like settling into a new form of self expression?
At first it was a bit uncomfortable, since I was adjusting to the attention I would get from my peers. Regardless of how others would perceive me, I tried to stay as confident and as true to me as I could. It wasn’t that hard to ignore the negativity, since my entire life I’ve been ostracized for being too, “annoying,” “fat,” “fem,” and just overall being myself.
How has drag helped you learn about yourself?
Drag totally made a 180 on my confidence and my self esteem. When I was a kid, I just didn’t like myself – you could even say I hated myself. I thought I was ugly and I never liked looking at myself. Drag made me realize that I am more and that I actually am beautiful. I started to appreciate my features more than I ever did before. Drag without a doubt helped me find the beauty I never knew I had in myself.
What’s the weirdest reaction you’ve ever gotten from someone about your makeup?
Probably the weirdest reactions I’ve ever received was from my own family. Even now, I get discouraged and upset about some comments I receive. One thing I always try to keep in mind is that regardless of the perception of others, it’s your own perception that truly matters.
What are your favorite products to use on your face?
Recently, you had some issues on Instagram with some girl demeaning you for your appearance?
At first, I had no idea that what was going on. I was receiving followers and comments from her own following that they had discovered me through her. I was quite confused, since I had no idea what was going on, so I tried to go to their page, and it was just gone.
I assumed she had blocked me and I jumped onto my personal account and I found her page. What I saw on her story was her bashing my queerness and my self-expression. She was basically saying she doesn’t like my “hairy tits” on her timeline.
What were your initial thoughts upon reading her words versus how you feel about it now?
My initial reaction was just complete shock, but I realized after it settled in that it was kind of funny in a way. It just boggled my mind that a grown woman would bash me on her story for just expressing myself. I messaged her regarding the whole situation calling her out about her extremely hurtful and negative comments.
She responded quite well and apologetic, but she still had a stance on what she said. I had to respect her opinion, but I was clarifying to her that it’s never okay to demean other people’s art. In the end, the whole situation ended up being a blessing in disguise, and I gained a lot of support from the online drag community.
Samantha Laporta may not ring a bell with you yet, but her debut single, “Own The Night,” is already breaking the charts.
This girl better be on your radar, because she’s killing it!
“Own The Night” was on Radio Disney’s top 10 songs, and it was the most requested song on the station for four weeks in a row.
The singer has already written three more songs, and we are hoping to hear them very soon, because we already have “Own The Night” on repeat! Check out our exclusive interview with the singer, and be sure to check out her acoustic version of the single here and below (exclusively released by us).
What’s the inspiration behind the song?
For “Own The Night,” I was really looking forward to getting back home and seeing my friends. I wanted to write a song with a chill vibe that captured the feeling of being with your friends on a road trip – hair blowing in the breeze with the radio cranked. I wanted to write a fun song.
I love to go out with my friends we go to the beach and sit around the bonfires and just have a great time.
How was it seeing your song on the top 10 of the Radio Disney playlist?
Truly amazing seeing “Own The Night,” on Radio Disney’s top 10 songs. It was also super cool being on the Radio Disney Spotify playlist. I hear from fans all the time who love the song, and it’s a great feeling hearing that from them.
The song is doing really well and Radio Disney asked me to walk the Red Carpet and attend the Radio Disney Music Awards.
Are you working on any new music, and if so, tell us a bit about it!
While I was in Los Angeles for the Radio Disney Music Awards, I wrote and recorded 3 new songs. The first has a chill vibe, the 2nd has a Latin groove, and the 3rd is a pop song that that make you want to jump up and dance.
New York-born and LA-based singer and dancer, Rainsford, may come from a notable Hollywood family, but that’s not what makes her interesting.
Our newest Ones to Watch Covergirl, Rainsford, is someone to look out for because of her hard work and her artistry – something that is actually hard to come by in the industry. She has been working on her newest EP, “Emotional Support Animal,” for 2 years – singing, songwriting, and even creating merch around the release. She also just got off of a hugely successful tour!
We sat down with the artist to talk about her name, her hit single, “Intentions,” her favorite witch, and more. Check out the exclusive interview and photoshoot below!
Rainsford is my full first name. It was my great grandmothers name, so it came from my family.
What was the inspiration for your hit single, “Intentions?” What was it written about, and what did you want your fans to feel listening to it?
I wrote “Intentions” when I was starting a new relationship and feeling insecure. I was hoping they liked me as much as I liked them.
I would never want to tell someone how to feel when listening to my music. But, of course, I hope people enjoy it. And I think we can all relate to the internal storm of excitement and self doubt that happens when you’re seeing someone new.
You love animals, and you actually rescue kittens through your local shelter. Where did this passion stem from?
When I was really young I lived on a ranch in Montana. So I started tending to animals from a very young age. Taking care of little chicks, collecting eggs, riding horses, and sneaking the cats in my bedroom window at night – my dad didn’t like them being in the house. So I’ve always felt deeply connected to animals.
There is such a need to help at shelters. Especially in LA, they are so overrun and under-funded. These poor animals are locked in cages, living very unhappy lives because of human neglect and irresponsibility. So whenever my schedule allows it, it makes me feel so good to give some love to kitties and pups. And it’s kitten season right now, so there is even more attention needed!

How can our readers get involved with their local shelters, even in a small way?
It’s really easy. You can just Google where your local shelter is and call them. I took a quick course that allowed me to foster. But, you can also volunteer to walk dogs or help at adoption drives. There are a lot of ways to help.
You are a vegetarian, and it’s super important to you. What inspired you to become vegetarian, and how do you think you’re impacting the environment because of it?
I’ve been vegetarian now for 12 years now. For me, it was a really easy decision. I love animals so much. I think their lives are just as valuable as mine or yours. The meat industry is incredibly cruel. Plus, the environmental impact is profound.
How can someone reading this take steps towards becoming vegetarian?
I would check out the PETA website. They have lots of articles about the meat industry and making the transition. I think it’s important to recognize that meat comes from a living, breathing, thinking, and feeling being. If you wouldn’t be able to kill and eat an animal for yourself, maybe you should consider a plant based diet.
You have been dancing for a while now. What is your favorite genre of dance and why?
I started ballet when I was 2, and I danced really intensely throughout high school. Now I just dance because I love it and it makes me feel so good. You mostly do contemporary and weirdo-jazz, express yourself stuff.
Dress: Alice McCall, Earrings: Stylist’s own, Rings: Luv AJ
Sweatshirt: Vintage Giorgio Armani, Shorts: True Religion
You are currently designing your own merch – how has that process been, and what can we expect from the line?
It’s been so fun! I love clothes and I love creating. I’ve been making so many collages and picking my favorite ones to put on shirts and hoodies. There are pretty limited items to begin with, but I am so excited to design more and more stuff!
You are into spellmaking and a little bit of witchcraft. Did you ever think that you were going to go to Hogwart’s when you were a child?
Oh my god, I would have loved to. I love anything magical, and I totally believe in manifesting the life you want to live. For me, being connected to the earth and taking the time to recognize how I’m feeling is really important.
And, doing spells and ceremonies especially with other women is really powerful. It’s a form of self love. I love recognizing my desires and releasing what no longer serves me.
Favorite IRL witch: Lana Del Rey, Azealia Banks, or Stevie Nicks?
I love Lana. Such a queen.
Favorite TV witch: Hermione from Harry Potter or Marnie from Halloweentown?
Hermione 100%.
Do you own any animals, and if so, what are their names?
I have two cats, Myrtle and Wizard, and a dog named Books (originally named Happy Birthday but my ex hated that name when we adopted him and made me change it and I still resent that because I love the name Happy Birthday, but now it’s too late to change it back).
What’s your beauty routine?
I’m sometimes really lazy about beauty stuff and then sometimes I’m really into it. I always wash my face using an organic moisturizer. I also love using face masks. I started watching these 5 minute YouTube tutorials for face massage, so I’ve been doing those sometimes, too.
Favorite skincare product that you absolutely cannot live without?
In general i don’t wear a lot of makeup. My go to’s are Glossier’s Boy Brow and Vincent Lingo Lip Tint. I use them every day. I also love Dr. Hauschka products.
What can we expect music wise, or other, from you?
I just released my first EP “Emotional Support Animal” a few weeks ago. Check it out! I’m going on my first ever tour next month, too!
What is your EP about and what was the inspiration behind it?
I’ve been working towards releasing this EP for about two years now. It’s very personal and relationship-based. I’m a highly sensitive and emotional person, so this EP is an expression of my experiences.
I love how it turned out. I wrote everything with my best friend Nick Dungo (who’s own artist project is called JaJa Bu and it’s so good). I’m thrilled for people to hear my music and hopefully enjoy what I’ve been creating.
Oh Hey Girl is a new womenswear brand that wants to shake up the fashion industry by offering up East Asian-inspired street style for the empowered, aspirational woman.
So far, the brand includes oversized and asymmetric looks – basically, everything that’s on-trend right now, but with a touch of that runway vibe. “The brand resonates most with those who have a soft-spot for urban culture and think mainstream is boring,” says Oh Hey Girl.
The founders consist of two young women, Jade Douse and Symone Mills. The duo want to push creative boundaries, kill stereotypes, and promote uniqueness – these are the ideas behind the brand and the women who created it.
Jade and Symone first met in college 10 years ago, and have been good friends ever since. While working in a creative industry, Jade actually started selling East Asian style clothing on Depop.
The founders, Jade and Symone
After seeing a huge hype around her shop’s unique style and the growth of her budding side hustle, Jade brought the idea to Symone, with the desire to develop the Depop store into a brand and ultimately, a business.
Symone came from a business background and immediately saw potential in the brand, and that is how Oh Hey Girl started. They built the brand from the ground up, with no investments and no aid.
“I was bored of mainstream style. Everything is so similar and everyone looks the same. It’s so important to be different and put your own stamp on the world, however you may choose to do that,” explains Jade of why she started her store.
The women have now made it their mission to inspire their female customers through empowering, relatable content and inclusive campaigns (can more brands be doing this?!).
“I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit and wanted to explore how far I could take it. It’s important to me to affect change, not just in the industry, but also in people. Starting a business is just a great way to communicate your message and grow as an individual,” Symone says, on why she joined Jade on the Oh Hey Girl journey.
As for their advice for any other woman out there trying to make a business like them? They have a few simple pieces of advice you can follow.
Don’t be put off by business plans, not having money, and all that. Everything you think that is required to start a business is not necessarily true. We did this with no plan and no money and not really any experience of running a business.
We made mistakes, yes, but we learned a lot and managed to get through them. We will continue to make mistakes, but that’s part of the journey.
Do. Don’t spend so much time planning and talking about it. You have to go out and start testing your business to see if it works. If you’re trying to sell a product, you need to know you can sell it before you put in all the hard work of strategic planning.
Go with your gut. People will always try and advise you on what you should/shouldn’t be doing. Ultimately, nobody knows your business better than you do.
Play it safe, but also take risks. It’s good to play it safe and be sensible with your spending and the decisions you make. But, it is also important to take risks to help grow your business.
SAVE CASH. Cash flow issues are what will kill your business. Save as much cash as you can so that you have that contingency money if anything goes wrong – because things will go wrong.
Do what you love. It’s going to pretty much take over your life. There will be no days off. It’s highly stressful, and you will have to be on the ball thinking of new ways that you can stand out from the rest, so make sure it’s for something that you love. This way, you can actually put your heart and soul into it and get the best results.
Before using Farsáli’s Rose Gold Elixir, I had sworn off any oil in my skincare routine.
They say that if you have oily skin, it’s (obviously) best to avoid adding any oil to that equation. But, my skin has never been oily. I have normal to dry skin, so adding oil can’t hurt, and can probably actually help.
If you haven’t already noticed, Farsáli’s Rose Gold Elixir is all over Instagram. Beauty and makeup bloggers from all over are obsessed with the results they receive from the product. Even big names like Jackie Aina and Farah D are loving this stuff. It’s also a huge favorite at Sephora – when I went to get a restock, it was sold out.
The Elixir is infused with specks of 24-karat gold, and it’s rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids. It’s formulated with ingredients that were made to work together to give you the best results when adding it to you skincare routines.
The main ingredient is rosehip seed oil, which penetrates the skin to nourish and hypdrate, while also brightening and improving skin texture. Rosehip is packed with linoleic and linolenic acids, vitamin C, and vitamin A – all which help reduce the appearance of fine lines (help me with this, please!) and discoloration.
As for the gold flakes – they’re not just there for show. The 24-karat gold absorbs right into your skin, leaving your skin naturally glowing and radiant. Now that is something I strive for. I basically want to always look dewey and glow-y, like a Greek goddess.
The oil is also free of synthetic fragrances, and it is 100% cruelty-free and vegan, which are always pluses.
I tried out this product in two major ways – using it as a step in my skincare routine at night for hydrated, smoother skin, and mixing it with my foundation for a more natural, glow-y finish.
For the skincare portion, I used the oil all over my face and neck every night for about 3 months. The fact that I didn’t stop using it after a week goes to show that I clearly love it. Normally, if I am testing something and it turns out to be awful, I will just stop all together. But, I continued to use, and still use, the Farsáli oil.
Here’s why: It did exactly what it said it would. My face has gotten visibly smoother and brighter, something that I have never experienced with a product before. Usually, getting my skin to feel and look smooth is a huge challenge. But, the oil made a huge change in my skin composition, and even friends and family keep telling me how much I am glowing!
My skin actually broke out when I ran out of the stuff. I raced to my local Sephora, where the oil was legit sold out, and it was the worst week and a half of my life waiting to get it again.
Help me. I’m addicted.
For the makeup portion, I noticed a lot of people mixing the oil with their foundation. Don’t use a lot. That was the mistake I made the first time around. Take two or three drops and add it to your foundation, and see how you glow.
Basically, I wanted to add the oil to my foundation because I saw that it gave a more well-rounded, natural, and dewey look. In this heat, there’s no way you will catch me caking on makeup. No thank you.
Adding a little bit of the oil to my makeup game made the biggest difference. My makeup doesn’t melt and doesn’t suffocate me anymore. It also isn’t smudge-y, even though that was my first worry when it came to oil. Plus, the gold flakes make your skin glow so hardcore – especially in the Summer sun.
The Elixir is available at FARSÁLI.com, Sephora stores, and Sephora.com, and it goes for $54.
Cailin Russo first started out as a solo act, but realized that she really wanted to be a part of something bigger and something more powerful.
That’s when she decided to hold auditions for bandmates, and shortly after, RUSSO was born. The band consists of Cailin Russo (lead vocals), Hayley Brownell (drums/vocals), Sean Ritchie (bass), and Tyler McCarthy (guitar) – all extremely talented and determined to be the next it-band of our generation with their loud, pop-punk-y sound (not dissimilar to the likes of No Doubt).
The band’s debut EP, “House With A Pool,” releases tomorrow, and if the songs on it are anything like their first singles, “Ghost,” and “Lonely,” then I have no doubt it will be unreal. RUSSO’s sound is able to take you back to the days of pop punk, while still bringing a new vibe to the table.
Don’t forget to give their new EP a listen tomorrow, and keep up with the four on what’s next. Check out our exclusive interview and photoshoot with Russo below, and see why they are the newest cover stars of Galore’s Sisterhood of Sound Issue.
So your new EP is about to be officially out! What can we expect? Favorite part of making it?
CAILIN: EP is officially out tomorrow!! I’m so fucking excited!! I hope everyone can just make memories to these songs, but my favorite part is that it is out! Lol.
TYLER: Expect the unexpected.
What’s your favorite song off the EP and why?
CAILIN: My favorite songs off the EP are “Bad Things,” “Loud Mouth,” and definitely, “Joyride.” They’re all so sick in their own ways. “Loud Mouth” has the demanding pop relief, while “Bad Things” makes you want to stage dive and drift into the ocean. “Joyride” is just the jam – it keeps my jazz love around and it has such an amazing story.
The story is to not be able to be with that person you love – maybe because of timing or distance or it’s not right – but you want it so you find each other in your dreams and joooooyriiiide.
HAYLEY: “Loud Mouth” is definitely my favorite song off the EP. It just makes me wanna dance every time – especially when I’m playing it live!
TYLER: “Joyride,” because it speaks directly to my heart through my ears.
SEAN: “Bad Things,” purely because of how fun it is to perform live.
You guys are a fairly new band, but you’re already opening for Jessie Ware and supporting Madison Beer on tour. What is that like?
CAILIN: Opening up for Jessie Ware and Madison has been a dream. Firstly, because our music is so different, so to be able to cross-pollinate sounds and experiences is awesome. Also, to be able to open and kick the show off is fucking amazing.
Setting the tone is always fun because people can be so skeptical. Playing with them has been an awesome learning experience and we all got to bond and really get synchronized.
HAYLEY: It feels really exciting to be at the beginning stages of this project, because all the doors are open. Tour was insane – just being thrown into a completely new situation and having a blast playing shows most nights for an entire month was an experience in itself. But, also being able to really bring these songs to life through a live show.
TYLER: It was overwhelming, but overwhelmingly fun.
SEAN: It’s been a bit hectic at times but we wouldn’t trade it for anything. I think we’ve all learned so much about each other through this whole process of shows and touring that we might not have otherwise. It’s brought us closer together. We’ve gotten the opportunity to meet a lot of really great people along the way.
SEAN: Getting to travel to new places and play our songs live for new people!
HAYLEY: Finding the best coffee spots in every city we hit up.
TYLER: Seeing small life in small places and big places – like talking to an Uber driver about their city and how much they hate/love it.
CAILIN: The best thing about tour life is the camp-like lifestyle, waking up and seeing each other is so crazy and (maybe others would disagree) but I was thriving on this tour. It was especially fun because everyone just bonded and let go.
We all got tattoos on the back of the bus in Oklahoma (it was Sean and Hayley’s first tattoo). We all designed each-others tattoos and our friend/stylist Georgia physically gave it to us with a needle taped to a pencil.
How did you guys get together as a band?
TYLER: Through the ever-changing music circuit, and fate, as it would seem.
CAILIN: We got together as a band after I held auditions back when I was a solo act. As time passed and our seasons changed, so did the music. It became progressively rocky, and so I decided I wanted to be in a band. Hayley had auditioned 2 years ago, Sean was her roommate, and Tyler was a recommendation from a bass player that was potentially in the band (but things didn’t work out).
However, now we have the mastermind which is Tyler. I had already made the music, so it was just about performing together. We’re now writing and recording as a band from now ‘til whenever we break up and hate each other (laughs).
Who are your biggest inspirations, musically?
CAILIN: My biggest inspirations musically definitely fluctuate, as I consider my taste eclectic and a little hard of focus. I would say my general references would be Omarion, 3 Doors Down, and R Kelly.
Just kidding! I really like to reference Kelis, No Doubt, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Kills, Outkast, Nirvana, The Gorillaz, The Smiths and classic rock, like The Rolling Stones. More psychedelic-sounding bands, too.
TYLER: There is an ever-growing list of specific people and music but truthfully anything that tunes me into a piece of life that I have either felt all to familiarly or that is so alien to my own experience or expectation that my perspective of what it means to be a person shifts a degree further.
SEAN: I grew up listening to classic rock records that my dad put on around the house. The Beatles and Led Zepplin, in particular. Psychedelic/progressive rock such as Yes opened the doors for a more aggressive sound on the bass guitar. I’m a huge fan of Chris Squire, the bassist for Yes, and John Paul Jones of Led Zepplin.
I’m also heavily influenced by Motown and Soul/RnB music, like Stevie Wonder, Al Green and Marvin Gaye. I have a really strong connection to the 90’s ‘Seattle Sound’ music in particular, like Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden.
HAYLEY: Drumming wise, I am heavily influenced by the former drummer of MuteMath, Daren King. But also guys like Mark Guiliana and Nate Wood who are heavy jazz players that constantly push boundaries of what it means to be a drummer. They have such specific voices in their playing that makes me want to continually discover and shape my own. But I love the band Local Natives & artist, Ben Howard.
What’s the best thing being about in a group, rather than being solo acts?
TYLER: Looking over at someone during the set and saying absolutely nothing but knowing exactly what that person is thinking and feeling. Being completely in tune with each other if only for a moment.
SEAN: As a musician, it definitely takes a lot of pressure away if you aren’t the only one performing on stage. Being in a band is really fun because you are all there to support each other. When we are all on stage together we get to interact and have a good time while we are performing. The chemistry that we have on stage is very playful. I think it keeps things fresh and can be more entertaining for an audience to see.
HAYLEY: You’re not so lonely. It’s like living life – it’s always better with good company. We get to experience things together, bounce ideas off of each other, and are each other’s voice of reason.
CAILIN: The best things about being in a group is knowing you depend on each other, it is like a safety blanket but also just a dream come true. Seeing their faces just really grips you, almost like your mom looking at you when you’re a baby. We help each other get through it and enjoy.
Solo acts are cool, but the attention is all on you, and if you fuck it up, it’s all on you. Also, in the same regard, if you carry yourself like a beast as a solo act, it is really impressive. But, bands can be so much more powerful, mixed with everyone’s personalities and talents.
HAYLEY: Everyone in the band is such a goob, so I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we all just like joking around and making up stupid stuff to laugh about that probably we only think is funny.
CAILIN: Well, we like to talk and make music together. We love to eat and do activities – eating and drinking, though, are definitely activities we’re often ready to participate in.
What’s the inspiration behind your premiere song, “Lonely?”
CAILIN: The inspiration behind “Lonely,” was really based around the music (which was made first). It was so fast and aggressive – it already had an antsy feeling to it. So to make the song about racing to get home and racing to get to the future and racing to make decisions was really fueled off the music.
TYLER: It’s about being so lonely that you are urgently seeking a connection with anyone and anything but in that urgency you manage to look right past the relationships you already have.
What can we expect from you guys in the future?
CAILIN: I hope we will have a lot of tours around the world. I want us to have a whole spectrum of music, crazy fucking outfits, and amazing visuals. Also a good Summer 2018!
HAYLEY: Definitely more music and lots of live shows!
TYLER: Louder and weirder.
If you had to explain your sound in 3 words:
TYLER: Loud and weird.
HAYLEY: Aggressive pop punk.
CAILIN: Our sound in 3 words would be 1) pop 2) present 3) fast (I’m gunna regret these answers in the future).
CAILIN: It’s a pretty interestingly-put-together song about trying to be in a relationship with someone, but the only way it will work is if you are both present. It’s not about being with a ghost or a shell of a person. All the footage for the visual was from tour and I think we were all pretty excited to share it!
TYLER: Have you ever seen a ghost? Or thought that you had? Or later realized that in fact you probably experienced something not on the scale of normal perception? Or why the idea that ghosts, like aliens and dragons, extend over all cultures and all peoples of the earth regardless of time? That these mythologies are past down from generation to generation like the urge to procreate.
And as a new born baby knows not to breath in water if submerged, we all fear the unknown. That which echoes through our DNA is very hard to rationalize and no matter how hard we try to disprove phenomena, we struggle to finally put to rest the notion that our spirits are not our bodies, and that when we leave our bodies we may become untethered in a way which our energy continues to radiate through old hotel rooms and dark attics. BOO!
What is one thing you want people to know about you?
SEAN: I can recite lines from the movie “Men in Black,” verbatim. I wouldn’t say it’s a talent – maybe just a warning that you should probably never watch that movie around me.
HAYLEY: That my mom makes the best lasagna. I. Love. Lasagna.
TYLER: I seem to think that people know something about me that I don’t know about myself, so if you could tell me that would be great.
CAILIN: One thing I want people to know about me is that I believe in myself and my dreams and no one is going to stop me, even it if takes a while. Also, don’t try me at DDR – I really did the thang back in the 2000’s.
CAILIN: My fashion idols range. Some staples would definitely be Lisa Bonet and young Drew Barrymore and Winona. Also, Gwen Stefani and Keli – there are probably some more subconscious ones that I can’t think of right now.
Favorite iconic 90s outfit?
HAYLEY: Lindsay Lohan’s campy outfit with the denim jacket as “Haley” in “Parent Trap.”
SEAN: I’ll just go ahead and say it. Kurt Cobain – light wash denim and plaid flannel. Generation defining.
CAILIN: My favorite 90’s iconic outfits would be Rose Mcgowan with Marilyn Manson in the see-through chain dress, and Lil Kim in the purple nipple dress!
TYLER: I’m pretty sure Bowie had his weird little soul patch goatee in the 90’s that really spoke to that era. Or, anything that Bobby from “Twin Peaks” wore.
With flawless golden hour selfies, impromptu beach trips and mini dresses comes another, considerably less exciting element: sweat.
Sweating is harmless, mostly. In fact, it’s good for us and is a part of the way our body maintains homeostasis (don’t worry, I promise that was the only time homeostasis will be mentioned in this article – I’m always looking for an excuse to use the word homeostasis, though).
That being said, Summer, and the sweat that comes along with the season, can have weird, sometimes unpredictable effects on our skin. Even people with naturally “good” skin often complain of skin problems during the Summer.
That’s because the sun effects our skin in different ways during this time of the year. And naturally, with a change in season should typically come a change in skin care. And Dr. Zoe Draelos of AmLactin is here to help.
AmLactin is a skincare brand that differs from others in that it has 3 times the amount of lactic acid in its products.
We asked Dr. Draelos all about how lactic acid, and more specifically, AmLactin, can help you achieve the Summer skin of your dreams:
Summer heat can make oily skin oilier. Increased humidity and summer temperatures increase both sweat and sebum production.
In what ways does the Summer weather affect dry skin?
Summer heat can affect dry skin by making it itchier. Sweat is a cause of skin irritation and can cause itching.
What are your number one tips for people with dry skin for staying hydrated in the Summer? What about oily skin?
People with dry skin should select a light weight moisturizer that allows sweat to evaporate from the skin. Petrolatum, mineral oil, and plant oils should be avoided as they can prevent the evaporation of perspiration.
Dimethicone is a breathable moisturizer and an excellent approach for dry skin. Oily skin people may not need a moisturizer in the summer. However, everyone should select a sunscreen containing moisturizer to prevent sun damage.
Physical exfoliation, with a brush or pad, should be done weekly. However, daily exfoliation can be accomplished safety daily with a lactic acid moisturizer.
What exactly does lactic acid do for the skin?
Lactic acid increases the ability of the skin to hold water. It also encourages dead skin to slough and exfoliate creating better hydrated smoother skin.
What are some must-haves in a Summer skincare routine?
A sunscreen in a must have for everyone.

I’m sure by now, you have all seen the spot-on Beyonce impressions floating around the Internet – mainly of which she talks us through the strategy behind her Instagram layout. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can watch it here now, and thank us later.
The extremely talented, extremely funny woman behind it is Jade Novah.
Jade is a multi-talented singer, songwriter, actress, comedian, and viral sensation who is ready to take the stage in her very own spotlight. She has spent several years singing background vocals and writing songs for major artists such as Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Eminem, and Rihanna. Jade’s musical expertise even landed her the gig of mentoring talent on Fox’s new musical competition show, “The Four.”
She has had one after another when it comes to viral videos that showcase both her amazing vocal range as a singer, and her ability to perfectly impersonate celebrities such as Beyonce and Kim Kardashian. Ready to finally step into her own spotlight musically, Jade has just released her highly anticipated, debut album “All Blue.” You can listen to the album here.
The album is a mix of everything from nostalgic R&B, ethereal trap, hip hop, and even pop, and it is sooooooo good! We got to hangout with Jade to take some pictures and and get the answers to all things we have been dying to know about Mrs. Novah. Keep scrolling below to read the full interview and don’t forget to checkout her new album “All Blue” out now!
Who has been your biggest inspiration musically?
Honestly, the music of Disney! That was one of my first introductions into music at a very young age. You couldn’t tell me I wasn’t a Disney princess! The music was always so magical and timeless, and I always strive to have an element of that magic in my art to make people feel the way I did as a young girl listening to those songs.
How did you get your start in music?
I started out singing in a girl group when I was about 8 or 9. I’ve been pursuing a career in music ever since!
Who has been your favorite artist to sing backup for and why?
Rihanna! I started singing background vocals for her in 2014 for her Monster Tour and continued on through her Anti World Tour. Her songs are so eclectic and I have always been a huge fan of her music, so there was literally never a dull moment!
You have been writing songs for artists for awhile now under group PenUp Dolls, what made you want to step into the spotlight and start singing the songs yourself?
When I first met my husband and producer, Devin Johnson! I met him at a writing camp in Atlanta, and we started collaborating on music for other artists. We both were at a place where we were tired of chasing song placements and not being allowed to be as expressive or creative as we wanted to be. It was the perfect time to get back to making music for myself, because I had finally met someone who could help me bring my music and ideas to life!
What was your performance for Stevie Wonder like? How did him reaching out to you personally make you feel?
It was surreal! I’m still floating from that experience, honestly. His music is part of the reason I became an artist and songwriter. After he heard a cover I did of his song, “Overjoyed” he invited me to sing at his annual charity concert, “House Full of Toys.” It was truly one of the most defining moments for me as an artist.
What do you hope comes out of all this, is your end goal to be performing your music as a pop star?
I just want to make beautiful art, travel the world, and be an inspiration to other dreamers and music lovers out there. For me, there is no “end goal,” because this dream is never ending. I want to do everything I can for as long as I can (including, but not limited to, performing my music as a pop star)!
Tell us about Keyonce Bowles and how that personality got started?
I’ve always loved doing impersonations and making people laugh! When I was younger, I would literally go around speaking in different accents just for fun. I’m a huge Beyoncé fan, and would imitate her voice around my friends and family. One day my husband suggested I put it up online, and so we created Keyoncé, the fictitious long lost twin of Beyoncé. I had no idea it would go as viral as it did!
Has Beyonce or any other celebrities responded to any of your impressions of them?
Yes! I did a Christmas parody called, “Slay Bells,” where I impersonated a few of my favorite artists. Erykah Badu and Michelle Williams were among them and they both responded on my IG with laughter!
How does it feel when you’re online scrolling through social media and see one of your own videos that has gone viral?
It feels incredible to have been able to reach so many people with my art! This is an amazing time to be a creative. Social media has literally changed the entertainment industry and allows creators like myself the chance to reach millions in an instant.
You recently released your single “All Blue” what has the reaction been to it from fans?
My fans have been so supportive! The day the single came out, it debuted at #7 on the iTunes R&B charts, which was a big deal for me because I was literally the only independent artist in the top 10. They sent me tons of videos singing along to “All Blue,” and it felt so good to have their love and support!
You are set to release your album this summer, what can we expect from it?
Yes! The album is titled “All Blue,” and will be available everywhere July 13th! This album has everything from ethereal trap and hip-hop (yes, I’ll be spitting some bars lol), to R&B and pop vibes! There’s so many different vibes musically, but everything has a cinematic element to it as well as an underlying theme of elevation!
Are you planning on putting your focus on your music or can we still expect to see your hilarious impressions popping up on YouTube?
I literally want to do it all but this is “All Blue” season right now. I’m also working on a few other different projects that will showcase more of my acting, writing, and comedy!
I always let my hair lead the way. I’ve been wearing goddess locs for about a year and a half now and they’ve transformed my style so much. I’ve been living in boho fashion, colorful prints, and layers ever since! Once I change my hair again, I’m sure my style will follow suit.
Fav beauty product right now?
I’m obsessed with all things Fenty Beauty (go Ri Ri!).
Fav vacation spot?
I had the time of my life in Amsterdam.
Beach or pool?
Beach, of course. But, then again, I love all things blue these days.
The 21 year-old California native is an enigma wrapped in a riddle, and her sound is unlike any other in the industry today. While she’s gained popularity for her RnB and soul feel, the singer, known to her millions of fans as H.E.R., has proclaimed her music “genre-less.”
You’ve undoubtedly heard her work, whether it be the quintessential Summer jam “Best Part” (which, by the way, the singer co-wrote with Daniel Caesar the first day they met) or her equally sweet-haunting-chill-sexy song “This Way”, which she sings with Khalid.
The industry has, of course, responded accordingly to the artists invaluable work. But sound isn’t the only element that sets H.E.R. apart in the industry: while H.E.R. is an acronym for “Having Everything Revealed”, there’s a sweet irony in the name given that the musician is extremely coy and mysterious about her identity. Or, as the singer simply puts it: lowkey.
Though the artist is nearing 1 Million Instagram followers, she hardly shows her face. In all of her photos, you’ll either find her in sunglasses throwing a hand up to cover her face.
Why?
It’s simple. Her mission as an artist isn’t concerned with her appearance: it’s about the music. And, more than anything, H.E.R. aims to use her music as the vehicle for her identity to shine through, not her appearance, personal life or internet presence.
We asked the precocious artist all about who she is, how she stays true to herself, and where she got H.E.R. name (pun intended). Oh and of course, what’s next for her RE her world domination. Read on for the interview and exclusive photos.
Did you always know you were going to be a singer? How did you find your place in the music industry?
Becoming a singer/songwriter was a given for me at a very young age, because it was all I ever wanted to do. It was something that came naturally to me, and those around me recognized it.
I was performing at 6 years old and never stopped. I stayed on path and God lead me to people who have embraced me and my gifts. I don’t think I was trying to find a place in the industry, I think people gravitated towards my work and what I created because I was honest: and there’s quite a bit of honesty missing in current music.
Who have been some of your favorite artists to work with, and why?
Daniel Caesar is one of my favorite artists to work with. The first day we met was the day we wrote “Best Part.” The musical chemistry was undeniable. Khalid is also dope. He has a good spirit. I like working with people who are genuine lovers of music. Alicia Keys was also monumental for me, and I’ve looked up to her since I was a little girl.
Artists are responsible for using the gifts that God gives them. If I didn’t create music, I wouldn’t be happy. Music is my outlet and the place I can express myself. Since I’ve released music, I feel like I’m giving a voice to people that feel the things I feel.
H.E.R. stands for “Having Everything Revealed.” What about this name resonates with you and who you are?
The acronym stands for Having Everything Revealed because I’m being very open and honest in my music without letting anyone see my actual identity. But my music is the ultimate representation of who I am.
How do you feel about artists sharing all aspects of their personal lives with fans? Do you prefer to be more public or private?
Some people are comfortable with people knowing everything about them. Personally, I’m a very private person – very low key. I have always been that way.
How do you manage to stay true to yourself in your work and your songs?
I don’t compare myself to anyone and I only try to be better than the person I was yesterday. It’s so easy to lose yourself trying to be someone else. At the end of the day, though, that is how I’ve accomplished so much – simply being myself.
I take inspiration from everything. New music, old school — you name it.
What change do you want to make in the industry?
I would like to bring real musicianship back. A lot of people don’t have a live band or play instruments on stage on on records. I am very proud of the musicality I bring to current music.
What are some things you’re currently excited about, both professionally and personally?
I’m very excited about releasing my debut album and touring the rest of the world. I just turned 21, and so much has happened. I think its a lucky age for me!
Our newest Ones To Watch Covergirl, Truly Young, is the hot-pink-haired cutie on Instagram that everyone is talking about – although she just recently dyed her hair back to black. The artist is only 17-years-old (how is she so much cooler than any 17-year-old I’ve ever known?) and is already wise and talented beyond her years. She has been delving into the music scene since she was 13, but has finally just released her first single, “LoverBoy,” on June 10th.
Along with writing and making the song, Truly also creative directed, wrote, produced, edited, and creative directed the entire short film that she released for “LoverBoy.” Not to mention she’s also the leading lady.
We sat down with the dreamy singer to discuss her plans for music in the near future, her style, her next possible hair color, and more. Check out the exclusive interview and photoshoot below, and see for yourself why we think she is absolutely one to watch out for!
Tell us a little bit of how you first began getting involved in music and when did you decide you wanted to have that be a career?
Music has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. But, I got serious about it when I was 13. I taught myself how to play the guitar and began writing songs almost every day.
I haven’t stopped since then.
How do you think your personal style has inspired how you decide to make your music?
I get ideas for my style from rock stars, so I think that has definitely inspired me to create rock music.
You released a short film to your song, “LoverBoy,” on June 10th. What can you tell us about it?
It’s called “LoverBoy.” I would say it’s a Bonnie and Clyde story gone wrong. While I was recording the song, it was like I could see the film playing out in my head. I came up with the concept and told my friends about it, then we shot it the very next weekend.
I edited the whole thing myself and it was finished within about a month! It’s the first song and short film I’ve ever put out so I’m insanely excited to see how people react to it.
How would you describe how your music sounds and who do you take most inspiration from?
I’ve been writing a lot of different genres of music, but it’s mainly inspired by rock. I love all types of rock. Lately, i’ve been really into Nirvana, No Doubt, The Smiths, Sonic Youth, and Joy Division.
What is your favorite thing about your upcoming songs?
I love the fact that they’re true to me. I write from real life experiences and I feel like I’m telling a story from my life in every song.
You’re well known to have such badass hair and style – who inspires your beauty and fashion choices?
I am obsessed with Gwen Stefani’s fashion in the 90s. I also love Courtney Love’s style, and Penny Lane’s style in the movie “Almost Famous.”
What hair color might you try next?
It will be extremely hard for me to part with the pink hair, but maybe turquoise, or a different shade of blue.
What is your favorite film and why?
“Donnie Darko.” I love dark comedies and psychological thrillers. “Donnie Darko” covers everything from typical teenage situations/problems to mental health to time travel. I’ve never seen a film I related to more than that one.
Who is your favorite director and how have they inspired you?
My favorite director is Wes Anderson. The fact that he has a specific aesthetic and sticks to it, but still manages to make every film different, is incredible. He has definitely inspired me to direct, write, and produce my own films.
How has your art influenced your personal style?
I think expressing myself through art without caring about what anyone else thinks of it has given me the confidence and ability to approach fashion and beauty in the same way.
Five beauty products you can’t live without (you’re stranded on an island, girl)?
Who do you look up to in the art world currently and why?
I really look up to Lana Del Rey. Her writing is the most insane/amazing thing I’ve ever heard. I also love Dana Trippe’s photography. I’ve written songs inspired by the surrealism her photos.
